Jack Hermansson wants to face Kelvin Gastelum next. “The Joker” has made that very clear.

Now, he’s doubling down on the call-out following this past weekend’s UFC Stockholm fan Q&A. In regards to his next opponent, Hermansson wants to fight his way up the rankings, and the only man above him that’s available is Gastelum (via MMA Junkie):

“The only person ranked ahead of me that’s available is Kelvin Gastelum so that’s who I want to fight,” Hermansson said. “Kelvin Gastelum, main event (in) Copenhagen in September. That would be something.”

A fight between the pair certainly makes sense. Hermansson just defeated Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza this past April to shoot his way into the elite at 185 pounds. As for Gastelum, he failed to capture the interim middleweight title when he faced Israel Adesanya in April as well.

At this point, a win for either man over the other would bode well for their title aspirations. Especially Hermansson, who provides a fresh face in the title picture. In regards to how he believes a fight with Gastelum would play out, Hermansson doesn’t give the former The Ultimate Fighter 17 (TUF 17) winner much of a chance:

“Of course (I would win in) the first round,” Hermansson said. “Ground-and-pound or the guillotine, for sure.”

UFC middleweight Deron Winn believes his wrestling would have caused more problems for Israel Adesanya than Kelvin Gastelum’s.

Adesanya defeated Gastelum in a five-round war last month to capture the interim middleweight title. He has now set up a meeting with Robert Whittaker which is expected to take place later this year in Sydney, Australia.

Winn, meanwhile, is getting ready to make his promotional debut at UFC Greenville on June 22 against Bruno Silva.

Despite just five professional bouts, the protege of heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier is confident in his abilities to succeed. Especially when he claims four or five guys rejected the chance to face him.

“If I start beating dudes up, only the top guys are going to take fights with me, but I’m okay with that,” Winn said on The MMA Hour. “Like I said, I’m very confident and I have a lot to learn and a lot of experience to get in the Octagon, but I truly believe sooner than later I’ll be ready for anybody and I already think I’m world class, so I’m personally not scared to get in there with anybody. But that’s just who I am and that’s who I’ve always been.”

Winn Offers Something Different

Winn is so confident that he was already visualizing how he would have fought “The Last Stylebender” in Gastelum’s place.

Gastelum did have his moments against Adesanya. However, he failed to impose his wrestling on him, landing just one out of an attempted nine takedowns.

Winn, on the other hand, believes he would have had more success than Gastelum because of his high-level wrestling pedigree.

“I think that I have something to offer that we’ve never seen,” Winn explained. “I have a lot of really interesting takedowns and I finish very well and I always have.

“That’s that difference between me and a guy like Kelvin Gastelum—who I respect very highly, I think he’s a stud—but the difference between me and him is I’m getting Izzy down to his butt more than he did because I wrestled at a very high level and I’ve learned how to maneuver these guys to a finish that only one percent of the world has.”

Jack Hermansson knows who he wants to fight upon his return to the Octagon.

Speaking to BJPenn.com, Hermansson said a fight against former interim title challenger Kelvin Gastelum sounds like a good match-up:

“I’ve been thinking more and more about it and I think the Costa and Romero fight has to happen, so maybe Gastelum would be a good one next,” Hermansson said.

“His grappling is alright but it’s his striking that’s his bread and butter. He’s a really good boxer and that’s his main strength. Of course he has good wrestling as well. I think it’s gonna be challenging to put him on the ground, but I think I’m gonna have a big advantage when I put him [there].”

The match-up certainly makes sense. Hermansson’s stock shot up after he beat Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza in Florida this past weekend. A huge fight is the only thing that would make sense after such a feat. Who better than the man who recently challenged for an interim UFC middleweight title? Gastelum was defeated by Israel Adesanya at UFC 236 by way of unanimous decision.

He’s certainly still a force to be reckoned with at 185 pounds and would provide a very interesting stylistic match-up to Hermansson. Should “The Joker” defeat Gastelum in their potential bout, it would be hard to deny him a shot at the 185-pound title.
