Chris Weidman addresses his past frustration with being overlooked for a shot at the UFC middleweight title after getting his hand raised in his last fight.

A few months ago, the promotion made the call for UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker to fight Kelvin Gastelum fight next.

This bout will go down at a later date that has yet to be revealed. The reason for the delay of the fight is due to them coaching the 28th season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF). Weidman has been out of action for more than a year now due to a thumb injury. He sustained the injury during his last fight against Gastelum in July 2017.

Factor In Decision

There were two factors into this decision made by the UFC. One, Gastelum received the title shot due to Weidman’s inactivity. Also, Weidman has gone 1-3 in his last four outings. The former UFC middleweight champion spoke with Fightful to talk about why he was upset with not getting the title shot.

“I was definitely pissed off because speaking to the UFC and the match makers. My management, I was led to believe that I had a chance of getting a title shot against (Robert) Whittaker. Then when I was at UFC International Fight Week, Mick Maynard called me to let me know that I wasn’t going to be able to get it.”

Weidman continued by stating that he thinks it was due to his injury and not being able to compete right away. Weidman understands that and is one of the reasons they tried to make the Luke Rockhold fight happen.

“It was based on my injury and not knowing when I was going to be able to come back. My time table, obviously I was trying to argue that I’d be able to come back. They wouldn’t have to worry about anything. They made the decision that they’d have Kelvin and Whittaker fight on the Ultimate Fighter show. At that time though it was supposed to be a fight that was set way earlier probably around the same time that I’m going to be fighting Luke.”

Chris Weidman Setting The Record Straight

The former UFC champion admitted that he was bothered by not getting a date set for that fight. At the end of the day, he doesn’t feel entitled for a title shot but did bring up beating Gastelum in his last fight.

“When it was set up for that fight to happen. Then Whittaker got injured and now we don’t know. I don’t think there is a date set for their fight yet, I was a little bothered. I’m not entitled to think that I deserve it and I don’t wanna be that guy. I went out there and finished Kelvin Gastelum in my last fight.”

Weidman understands the reality of the situation and it’s pretty clear. Gastelum was more active than him in the last year and it paid off.

“But he went out and won two more fights after that when I was injured. He went out and beat (Michael) Bisping pretty much right after my fight and Jacare by split decision. He did his thing, he was more active, I was out. So, its all good.”

Competing at a more natural weight is a welcomed trend in today’s MMA. With many fighters ditching their draining weight cuts, we broke down six fighters who could win a championship at a different weight class.

It used to be that fighters wanted to cut as much weight as possible in an attempt to compete at the lightest weight class possible. The thought was, having a substantial size advantage would translate into easier fights. Although many fighters have had success with this blueprint, in recent years the paradigm has shifted.

Fighters like Sam Alvey and Anthony Smith have recently decided to change things us. Both men were competing at middleweight, and having decent success, but since moving to light heavyweight both men have fast-tracked their fight careers. Smith is fighting Volkan Oezdimer in a potential 205-pound title eliminator bout, and Alvey has won two of three since changing classes.

That got us thinking here at LowkickMMA. Could other fighters benefit from switching things up? Here is our list of six fighters who could win gold at a different weight class:

Kelvin Gastelum – Welterweight

Fighters changing weight classes to better their performances is old hat. Take The Ultimate Fighter 17 winner Kelvin Gastelum.

After winning TUF 17, Gastelum announced he would be moving down to welterweight. The then 21-year-old Gastelum had success at 170 pounds despite battling with weight issues.

After repeated failed attempts to make the welterweight limit, UFC President Dana White strongly urged Gastelum to move back up to 185 pounds. Since moving back to middleweight Gastelum has gone 5-2, beating former middleweight champion Michael Bisping in the process.

He’ll now challenge Robert Whittaker for the middleweight title, but has often teased a return to welterweight to compete for that belt as well.

Gold could very well be in the future for Gastelum. Whether it’s at middleweight or welterweight remains to be seen.

Robert Whittaker Downplays Kelvin Gastelum’s “War” Comments

This is going to be a great welterweight title fight.

UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker doesn’t think he has been in too many wars in his mixed martial arts (MMA) career.

That’s opposed to what Whittaker’s next opponent, Kelvin Gastelum, thinks. The pair are coaching opposite each other on this season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF).

After that, they’ll collide with the 185-pound championship on the line. A venue and date for that fight has yet to be announced.

Last month Gastelum said he thinks Whittaker has been in too many wars inside the cage. Especially off back-to-back fights with Yoel Romero:

“I don’t know that he’s going to be the same fighter after these fights, after these wars that he’s been in,” Gastelum said.

“It takes a toll on the body, so we’ll see how he comes out after this hand surgery that he had.”

Speaking to media recently, Whittaker responded to Gastelum’s comments. The middleweight champ has a different take on the matter. With the exception of his fights with Romero, Whittaker said he hasn’t been hit much.

He believes Gastelum is trying to make himself feel better with his comments (quotes via MMA Fighting):

“I’d like to think that I’m one of the few guys who hasn’t been in a lot of wars,” Whittaker said.

“I haven’t been hit that much. My last couple fights have been pretty hard, but look at the opponents and the caliber I’m going up against.

“I think he’s telling himself that to make himself feel better. Because there are some bad guys out there that couldn’t put me away, that couldn’t touch me, and I walked through them.”

Video: ‘TUF 28’ Coach Robert Whittaker Planning Return To The Octagon

Middleweight champ Robert Whittaker is hoping to return to the octagon sooner than expected.

‘TUF 28’ coach Robert Whittaker is planning a return to the octagon in early 2019.

Whittaker has traveled one hell of an injury road in his short tenure as middleweight champion. In his most recent title defense at UFC 225 against Yoel Romero, the champ badly injured both of his hands and tweaked his knee. Surgery was needed to rebuild one of Whittaker’s hands and the other required months of painstaking rehab.

Things, however, appear to be looking up for the Aussie who is coaching opposite Kelvin Gastelum on the final season of The Ultimate Fighter premiering this Wednesday (Aug 29, 2018) on FS1. “TUF 28” Heavy-Hitters will feature both heavyweight and women’s featherweight divisions.

A fitting send-off for the reality show perhaps. Both Whittaker and Gastelum navigated the drama of the TUF house and prevailed. Both men now return as coaches.

Speaking to media members in Los Angeles yesterday (Aug 27, 2018) Whittaker articulated that even though his pending title fight against Gastelum doesn’t have a set date or time, he hopes it to be the early part of 2019.

Regardless of lack of venue or outcome of the show, Whittaker and Gastelum are going to fight for the strap. If the Aussie has it his way it will be sooner rather than later.
