In January 2015, Tyron Woodley and Kelvin Gastelum did battle in a three round welterweight bout at UFC 183 and although it was a closely fought contest, Woodley ultimately walked away with a split-decision victory.

Since then, Gastelum has moved up to middleweight primarily due to weight cutting issues, emerging as a contender and most recently knocking out former champion Michael Bisping. Woodley, on the other hand, has become the 170-pound champion, defending the title three times to date.

Next weekend, Gastelum will return to action in a pivotal bout against Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza and while he expects to fight for the 185-pound title in the near future, he also still has a rematch with Woodley on his mind:

“Eventually, I’m going to be fighting for that title at middleweight, which is crazy,” Gastelum said in a recent media scrum in Los Angeles (transcript via MMAjunkie). “But yeah, in my eyes, in the back of my head – way in the back of my head – I still have welterweight in mind.

“That fight is like a splinter in my heart,” he added. “I kind of want to get that fight back – make the weight, make it right. In a lot of people’s eyes, including myself, I won that fight.”

Woodley is currently recovering from shoulder injury but it’s unlikely that he’ll be moving up to middleweight any time soon. If Gastelum were indeed to get the green light from the UFC to drop back down in weight, perhaps the rematch could take place.

As far as the fight with “Jacare” goes though, Gastelum feels as if he’s prepared as best he could:

“You can only prepare and strategize the best you can, and I feel like I’ve done that,” Gastelum said. “I feel like I’m prepared to the best of my abilities for what he brings to the table.”

A few weeks back, we reported on Mike Perry’s public rejection of Kelvin Gastelum’s Facebook friend request. The two had engaged in a social media back-and-forth, with Perry ultimately appearing to come out on top.

Perry had actually initiated the war of words after posting a comment to Gastelum saying “Jacare” will choke The Ultimate Fighter winner out when the two meet at UFC 224.

Gastelum has finally broken the silence over his spat with “Platinum” and the story behind his now-infamous friend request (MMA Fighting):

“What happened was, I woke up one day, and I went to check my Facebook. Then he, randomly, I got a Mike Perry comment. I’m like ‘alright, I’m gonna check it,’ and it said ‘Jacare is going to strangle you.’ I’m like, alright, I didn’t reply, I didn’t ‘like’ it or anything. What I did was, I tried to mess with him just to see what he would do, and I sent him a friend request.”

“I kind of feel like it backfired. Because he blew it up on Twitter, he kind of made me look like a fool or at least I felt like it. But yeah, I’m not worried about him. I was just kind of messing around just to see what would happen.”

“I’ve learned that people will say anything online. Anything to get your attention, to get you to respond to them. And many of those people are the saddest people on earth. I don’t pay any attention to it. Only sometimes when I want to have some fun. … I used to read the comments and think ‘oh my god, what are people thinking about me, what are they saying about me?’ But now it’s just like, I realize some of those people are the most saddest people on earth.”

While Gastelum did compete at welterweight for a good portion of his UFC run, he’s now fighting at middleweight following several failed weight cuts to make 170 pounds, where Perry currently competes.

So, it’s unlikely the two will settle their differences in the cage, at least anytime soon.

Their online battle may rage on, however.

‘Platinum’ Mike Perry says he isn’t in the fight game to make friends, and unfortunately, Kelvin Gastelum had to learn that the hard way.

Former welterweight-turned-middleweight Gastelum sent a friend request to Perry on Facebook, but was viciously rejected and publicly shamed by ‘Platinum’ for his efforts:

Gastelum responded by calling Perry too ‘hot headed’ before saying someone would take advantage of ‘Platinum’s’ temper before one of his fights:

Gastelum tried to backtrack further after Perry denied his friend request, suggesting he was just doing it to mess with him.

The two don’t even compete at the same weight class (anymore), so the whole thing seems pretty juvenile.

But if anything can be gleaned from this exchange, it’s that Mike Perry doesn’t want to be your friend.

‘Platinum’ is currently coming off of two decision losses to Max Griffin and Santiago Ponzinibbio. Prior to those defeats, Perry had blasted onto the scene with vicious knockouts over Danny Roberts, Hyun Gyu Lim, and Jake Ellenberger.

Meanwhile, Gastelum has finally hit his stride in the UFC since moving up to 185 pounds, having just knocked out former champion Michael Bisping.
