Vitor Belfort has credited a move to the renowned Tristar gym for stirring his will to keep fighting, but following his win over fellow veteran Nate Marquardt at UFC 212, the time is right for “The Phenom” to retire.

If you followed Belfort leading up to his contest with Marquardt, then you know the Brazilian star’s plans for his fighting career have been in flux. After Belfort lost to Kelvin Gastelum in March, he said his next bout would be his last. Then Belfort reported that he wanted to keep fighting, but that he’d do so outside of the UFC. During fight week, however, the decorated fighter left the door open to more bouts with the world’s biggest promotion.

Well, “The Phenom” did end a three-fight winless streak on Saturday, by earning a decision win over Nate Marquardt, but it was far from a decisive affair. In fact, the decision could have gone the other way, and not too many folks likely would have disagreed.

After the win, Belfort said he plans to continue fighting, as he relayed earlier this week. But should he?

Now, at the end of the day, it’s up to Belfort and his family whether the 40-year-old should continue to fight. But, really, the timing is right, and one could even argue perfect, for “The Phenom” to hang up the gloves.

It’s been quite evident in Belfort’s recent outings that his hand speed and explosiveness are no longer the same. The middleweight showed glimpses of his finishing prowess during his bout with Marquardt, but at the end of the day, he was unable to add another stoppage to his resume. For much of the fight, Belfort appeared reluctant to pull the trigger. In some respects, he’s fortunate that his winless streak wasn’t extended to four.

So, when you consider where Belfort’s at in his career, and what transpired at UFC 212, it certainly seems like this is the right time to hang up the gloves. The star earned a win in Rio de Janeiro, in front of adoring fans, on the heels of three straight one-sided losses.

At this stage of the game, “The Phenom” has absolutely nothing left to prove, so why not head into the MMA sunset riding on a win rather than retire after another stoppage defeat like so many other legends have?

What do you think? Should Belfort continue to fight, or was his original plan still the best decision?

Former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman wanted a rematch with Gegard Mousasi after the incredibly controversial ending to their co-main event bout at April 8’s UFC 210, but instead he’s moving on to a bout with one of his division’s fastest-rising contenders.

News came at today’s UFC Summer Kickoff Press Conference Weidman will meet Gastelum in the main event of July 22’s UFC on FOX 25 event from the Nassau Coliseum. It will be another must-win bout for Weidman, who has lost a shocking three straight bouts by finish, with the controversial TKO to Mousasi following a brutal knee KO from Yoel Romero at UFC 205 and a vicious TKO loss Luke Rockhold at UFC 194.

Gastelum, meanwhile has reeled off two straight knockouts over Vitor Belfort and Tim Kennedy since being forced to finally move up to middleweight after he missed weight for his scheduled welterweight bout with Donald Cerrone at UFC 205. He earned a high-profile affair with longtime former champion Anderson Silva at June’s UFC 212, but was pulled from the bout when he failed a drug test for marijuana metabolites.

He was suspended by USADA for three months and will return against another champion now.

Kelvin Gastelum Handed Three-Month Suspension For USADA Violation

Kelvin Gastelum has been suspended by the United States Anti-Doping Agency for three months. Kelvin Gastelum has been suspended by the United States Anti-Doping Agency for three months.

Gastelum was originally slated to face off against former UFC middleweight king Anderson Silva at UFC 212 on pay-per-view (PPV) from Brazil, however, he was removed from the contest after being flagged by USADA. Gastelum tested positive for Carboxy-THC, the pharmacologically-active metabolite found in marijuana.

Originally, Gastelum was handed a six month suspension for the failed test, which was taken in-competition on March 11th, the same night of his main event bout against Vitor Belfort in Brazil. As a result, the Brazilian MMA Sports Court (STJDMMA) handed the 25-year-old a three month suspension and fined him 20 percent of his fight purse.

His win over Belfort was later overturned to a No Contest.

Gastelum is currently on a two-fight win streak with his recent knockout win over Belfort having been overturned. His last Octagon win saw him finish the now-retired Tim Kennedy in the third round of their UFC 206 PPV matchup back in December.

The Ultimate Fighter Season 17 (TUF 17) winner’s only losses in his mixed martial arts (MMA) career have come via split decision, and they’ve been to the likes of Neil Magny and current 170-pound title holder Tyron Woodley.

After making the jump up to 185 pounds Gastelum seemed to be presenting himself as a legitimate title threat at both the UFC’s welterweight and middleweight divisions. His recent trials with USADA will certainly take a toll on that momentum.

Gastelum will be eligible to return to action as early as June 11th.

His removal from the UFC 212 PPV sparked a fire under Anderson Silva, who called for an interim middleweight title bout against No. 1-ranked Yoel Romero, and threatened to retire if it wasn’t granted. UFC President Dana White responded by saying that if “The Spider” has retirement on his mind then he probably shouldn’t be in the Octagon anymore.

The middleweight division was in a bit of an awkward position after it was announced that former welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre would be coming out of retirement to challenge Michael Bisping for the 185-pound throne. Fighters such as Anderson Silva and Luke Rockhold had expressed displeasure with the Canadian’s immediate title opportunity, but that frustration may have turned into joy in light of recent events.

It was announced yesterday (Fri. May 12, 2017) by Dana White that plans for Bisping vs. “Rush” are now off and that No. 1-ranked Yoel Romero would be getting his rightful title shot. The UFC’s current middleweight division is full of great talent such as Chris Weidman, ‘Jacare’ Souza, Robbert Whittaker, Luke Rockhold, Gegard Mousasi (currently a free agent), and Kelvin Gastelum.

If Gastelum is able to make a statement in his next middleweight bout inside the Octagon, he could be right in the title mix as well.
