Holly Holm is eyeing a shot at the title if she’s able to dispatch Ketlen Vieira at UFC Vegas 55.

Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm has not given up her pursuit to get the promotional gold for the second time in her professional career. Having already been at the top once, ‘The Preacher’s Daughter’ believes a win in her next outing can put her in the mix of title contention.

This weekend, Holm will headline UFC Fight Night 206 when she takes on Ketlen Vieira at UFC Apex, Las Vegas. Vieira has been the more active fighter of the two having fought twice last year and going into the bout off a win over Miesha Tate in November 2021.

The main event will mark Holm’s return to action after a two-year hiatus. She last competed in the cage in October 2020 when she secured a win over Irene Aldana.

In an interview with TMZ Sports, Holly Holm talked about the danger she sees in her opponent. The 40-year-old believes she will significantly up her chances of getting a title shot if she manages to get a win over Vieira.

“She’s tough, she throws punches with intent. She wants to make me hurt. She is trying to clinch, she’s got her trips, she’s got her takedowns. She’s got a lot of heavy pressure when she’s on top. So, she has a lot of things that make her a very difficult fighter, a very difficult opponent. I’m just ready for all of it and I’m going to be better at any of those situations.”

Holly Holm wants the title once more

Currently ranked second contender at UFC women’s bantamweight, Holly Holm is only under the former ‘champ-champ’ Amanda Nunes in the divisional rankings. Given the outcome of Nunes’s last fight where she lost her title to Julianna Pena, a rematch would likely be on the cards as far as title matches go.

A win over the fifth-ranked Vieira may not do much for her in terms of getting a chance against Pena in her next contest. However, she will be able to put herself in a better position to probably take on the winner of the rematch between Pena and Nunes.

Holm spoke about how her life’s purpose is to be a champion and that she’s fully committed to it.

“I definitely think that could be the very next step. If I win this, I feel like the very next fight could be for a title. And that’s why I need to make the most of this fight. Any fight I have, I treat as my last fight only because it is that important. It could be your last opportunity, you never know.”

“I still want to be a champion, and I’m committed 100 percent. Otherwise, what would my purpose even be right now?”

A showdown between two women’s bantamweight contenders is in the works to headline the May 21 Fight Night card in Las Vegas according to Ariel Helwani of The MMA Hour.

Holm hasn’t stepped inside the octagon since October of 2020 when she dominated Irene Aldana over the course of five rounds en route to a unanimous decision victory. ‘The Preacher’s Daughter’ was scheduled to take on Norma Dumont at a UFC Vegas event this past October but was forced to pull out with a knee injury just 10 days before the fight.

Holm has not lost since she was stopped by Amanda Nunes in July of 2019, defeating Irene Aldana and Racquel Pennington during this time.

Holly Holm Presented With New Challenge In Ketlen Vieira

Known for her high-level kickboxing abilities, Holm currently sits at number two in the women’s 135-pound rankings while Vieira holds down the number six spot. However, the fight is much closer than the rankings would suggest as Holm will be faced with the task of taking on a rising competitor unlike many she has dealt with in the past.

Vieira holds a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu along with a black belt in Judo and a Brazilian national wrestling title. She has taken on a who’s who of the bantamweight division since arriving in the UFC, holding wins over the likes of Cat Zingano, Sara McMann and most recently, Miesha Tate. Her lone submission win came against Mcmann at UFC 215 in Edmonton.

Vieira, who sits at 12-2 as a pro, began her UFC career by going 4-0 before being knocked out by Aldana, whom Holm defeated in her last outing. Holly Holm currently holds a professional record of 14-5.

Who do you think takes this one on May 21st? Holly Holm or Ketlen Vieira?

UFC is targeting a high-level bantamweight bout for their May 21 main event.

The promotion is in the process of making a fight between Holly Holm and Ketlen Vieira, per a report from Ariel Helwani. The fight is being lined up to headline a “Fight Night” card in Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

The fight gives Vieira the chance to make another big move up the bantamweight division. While currently seated at #5 in the official UFC rankings, she is being paired against Holm, who is #2 at the moment.

Vieira picked up a big win in November, going five rounds to defeat former UFC Bantamweight Champion Miesha Tate via unanimous decision. The bout stopped the climb of returning contender Tate, who was appearing for the second time since coming out of retirement.

The fight put Vieira back into the win column after suffering a loss earlier in the year to Yana Kunitskaya. It was also her debut in the main event spot of a UFC card.

Six months after Vieira’s last win over a former champ, she will get the opportunity to beat another.

Holly Holm’s next appearance will mark her return to the cage, as she has been out of competition since October 2020. She was booked for two appearances in 2021, although both fell through due to suffering injuries.

Holm returns with some momentum, as she previously scored two victories in 2020. She started the year off with a win over Raquel Pennington. She later returned to go five rounds against Irene Aldana for a unanimous decision victory.

As previously mentioned, Vieira is only making her second headlining appearance. The same cannot be said for Holm, who has appeared in eight previous UFC main events.

Miesha Tate doesn’t regret anything about how she fought Ketlen Vieira in the main event of UFC Vegas 43.

Tate ended her retirement back in July and scored a TKO win over Marion Reneau. She was then set to headline another card but came up short against Vieira in a lackluster fight, but the former champ says she has no regrets.

“I’m really good. I’m in a great place,” Tate said on the Throwing Down with Renee and Miesha podcast (via MMAFighting). “This is so much different than the first time around, like I’ve said. I have so much more to be grateful for. Before, when I would fight, my fight day would be the last day of my life in my mind. It was the day I died, it was the day that nothing else happened or existed beyond that date. I was obsessed with it and when I would lose, it was crushing and when I would win it was all good. Now, it’s just a moment in time for me. I’m on a journey, I’m enjoying the process, and I’m okay. I’m at peace with this….

“Eventually, you’re gonna run into somebody where you need a solid B game and to evolve those things you’ve got to be willing to push yourself and you’ve got to be willing to take those risks and that’s what I did. It didn’t pay off with a victory but in my mind I still learned a tremendous amount, I had fun, I don’t have any regrets,” Tate later added.

With the loss, Miesha Tate drops to 19-8 in her career and 1-3 in her last four. Yet, she still remains a big name in the division and still has made it clear she wants to reclaim UFC gold.

However, Tate says she isn’t sure what will be next for her. For now, she’s planning on relaxing over the holidays and will see who she fights next sometime in the New Year.

“Absolutely nothing,” Tate said when asked what is next. “I’m gonna sit around and do a whole lot of nothing. I’m gonna eat. I’m just looking forward to Thanksgiving. I don’t even want to think about the next fight because I have these multiple cups in my life that it’s like sometimes I’m holding onto this cup and that one takes my priority and the other cups, they need their chance to have that precedence too. Right now I’ve put down the cup of fighting, I’m picking up the cup of family life, I’m gonna enjoy Thanksgiving, I’m gonna enjoy Christmas, the New Year, and then we’ll revisit and see what’s next.”
