The son of late-great mixed martial artist (MMA) Kimbo Slice, Kevin Ferguson Jr., is ready to make his own debut in the sport of MMA in the same promotion his father competed in, Bellator.

Ferguson has been set to make his debut in Bellator on multiple occasions now, however, a string of issues involving his opponents have kept him out of the cage.

‘Baby Slice’ recently joined Ariel Helwani of MMA Fighting on The MMA Hour last week to discuss his journey in the sport, stating he is taking it a lot more seriously after his father’s untimely death earlier this year:

“I take it more serious now,” Ferguson Jr. said. “It means a lot more to me now. At this point, it’s not even about the money or about the fame. It’s just about continuing the legacy. That’s my goal now, is to just continue the legacy and take the Slice name to the next level. To show the new Slice.”

While the situation of Ferguson’s debut being put off multiple times now is certainly a frustrating one for the young welterweight, he continues to keep a positive mindset about the situation as he promises it will only give him longer to sharpen his tools inside the cage:

“I’m gonna be more prepared, I’m gonna have more cardio, more technique, more power,” he said. “My skills are just gonna get better. I just feel bad for my opponent, whoever the guy is. He’s gonna get hurt in there.”

Although his father was very famous in the fight game at the time of his start in the amateur ranks in MMA, he refused to ask for help as he wanted to pave his own path in his journey to the big leagues:

“I didn’t ask for any help,” he said. “I wanted to show these guys that I was serious about it and this is something that I really wanted to do and that’s what I did. Now I have all the help that I need. I have all the right guys in my corner.”

Ferguson admits fighting is something that he has always wanted to pursue, as it is simply in his blood. He was reluctant to go to school as he would rather focus on training for a career in fighting, but out of respect to his father’s wishes he went to college where he studied photography:

“I’ve always wanted to be a fighter,” Ferguson said. “I didn’t want to go to school. I didn’t even want to go to high school honestly, I just wanted to be in the gym and fight.”

Due to Ferguson being the son of one of the most famous fighters to ever lace up a pair of gloves, many young talents are calling out the new pro to throw down inside the cage, something the 24-year-old welcomes with open arms:

“All these guys calling me out, I want them to call me out,” Ferguson Jr. said. “I want them to think they could step in the ring with me and step in the cage with me and step in the cage with me, because then they’re gonna be in for a rude awakening. I’ve been doing this for a while. I’m just ready to showcase my skills and let the world know.

“It’s really no pressure with [Kimbo Slice] being my father. It’s just more eyes on me. I got a bigger fanbase now because of him. All his fans are my fans.”

This week, Bellator MMA officials announced the addition of two undercard bouts, as well as the promotional debut of Kevin Ferguson Jr., the son of the late Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson.

While no opponent has been announced for Ferguson Jr. as of yet, it has been confirmed by multiple sources that he will be making his pro MMA debut on the card.

The other two bouts are official, the details of which you can read in the following press release that the promotion issued on Monday.

Scheduled to headline Bellator 160 on August 27th, is the second promotional appearance of former UFC Lightweight Champion Benson Henderson, who fights well-known contender Patricio “Pitbull” Freire in a Bellator Lightweight Title Eliminator.

TWO FEATHERWEIGHT THRILLERS ADDED TO ‘BELLATOR 160: HENDERSON VS. PITBULL’ AT HONDA CENTER ON AUG. 26

A.J. MCKEE PUTS UNDEFEATED MARK ON THE LINE AGAINST HENRY CORRALES AND BUBBA JENKINS LOOKS TO EVEN THE SCORE AGAINST GEORGI KARAKHANYAN

SANTA MONICA, CALIF (July 25, 2016) – Two high-profile featherweight attractions have been added to the main card of the recently announced “Bellator 160: Henderson vs. Pitbull” event on August 26 at Honda Center in Anaheim, Calif. The first pitting the undefeated A.J. McKee (4-0) against Henry Corrales (12-3), and the second newly-announced bout will see Bubba Jenkins (11-2) attempt to avenge a previous loss against Georgi Karakhanyan (24-6-1).

Tickets for “Bellator 160: Henderson vs. Pitbull” start at $30 and can be purchased now on Ticketmaster and at Honda Center Box Office. Doors for the event open at 4:45 p.m. PT local time and the first preliminary bout – which streams live on Bellator.com and The Bellator Mobile App — begins at 5:00 p.m. PT. Additional contests will be announced in the coming weeks.

The main event of the evening features a marquee matchup at 155-pounds, when Benson Henderson (23-6) returns to the division that he reigned supreme over for the many years to face former featherweight champion Patricio “Pitbull” (25-3), who is moving up in weight for the bout. Both men will be vying for a shot at Michael Chandler’s championship belt when they meet on August 26 in Anaheim.

At 21 years of age, McKee is undoubtedly one of the of mixed martial arts top young prospects. After beginning his career 7-1 as an amateur, “Mercenary” has made a splash on the professional circuit, recording a perfect 4-0 mark through his first four bouts. McKee has fought under the Bellator MMA banner since day one of his professional career, finishing all of his contests in the opening frame, including three knockouts and a rear-naked choke submission. The Long Beach, Calif. native will bring his flashy skillset just down the 91 Freeway to Honda Center, where he will have the opportunity to put on a show in front of his hometown fans.

After beginning his professional career 12-0, Corrales will enter the cage for the second time this year in search of his first win under the direction of Bellator MMA. Since joining the Scott Coker-led promotion, Corrales has fought nothing short of elite talent, challenging current champion Daniel Straus, Emmanuel Sanchez, and Patricio “Pitbull” on short notice. Of his 12 career victories, the 29-year-old featherweight has earned four knockouts and six submissions; including a brutal knockout of Gustavo Limon just 20 seconds into round one. Fighting out of Whittier, Calif., Corrales will share the home floor with his opponent and fellow California native, A.J. McKee, in Anaheim during the main card of “Bellator 160: Henderson vs. Pitbull” on August 26.

A longtime veteran of Bellator MMA, Karakhanyan will look to get back on track after dropping two closely-contested decision losses against Jenkins, who he handily defeated nearly two years ago via guillotine submission. Known to many mixed martial arts fans and pundits as “Insane,” the 31-year-old has finished 18 of his 24 wins as a professional, winning titles in multiple regional promotions along the way. A product of Millenia MMA in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., where he trains alongside close friend Saad Awad, the Russian fighter is finally healthy following multiple setbacks to his knee. Karakhanyan now looks to climb the 145-pound ladder, in a stacked division that he once sat atop as the No. 1 contender.

Just a few years ago, Bubba Jenkins was widely regarded as the top MMA prospect in all of the sport, though the title became tainted following the aforementioned loss to Karakhanyan at “Bellator 132.” The former NCAA National Champion wrestler with Arizona State University now has three consecutive wins under his belt, and is looking for redemption. Heading into his 11th fight under the Bellator MMA banner, the 28-year-old “Highlight Kid” looks to put on a stand-out performance in Bellator’s incredibly deep featherweight division.

June 6 2016 marked a dark day in combat sports history. The same week that Muhammad Ali had passed away we learned that the MMA community had lost one of their heroes too. Legendary Youtube sensation turned mixed martial artist Kimbo Slice had died suddenly of heart failure aged 42. It was a shock felt at the very core of the tight knit community and tributes poured in from all corners. Kimbo’s untimely death came during a turbulent time, with stars like Kevin Randleman, Jordan Parsons and Ryan Jimmo all passing within months of each other.

As the light of Kevin Ferguson’s existence was extinguished, the start of his son Kevin Jr.’s professional career has been ignited. Having fought a single amateur mixed martial arts contest on March 29, 2016, ‘Baby Slice’ will be making his pro debut with the last MMA promotion his father ever fought for. Bellator 160 will see Kevin Ferguson Jr.’s first step in to the world of pro fighting.

You may remember ‘Baby Slice’s’ nae from this brief clip giving him some exposure back in March of this year:

Talking on the sudden and very tragic passing of his famous father, as quoted by ESPN, Kevin Jr. says he’s still working on getting over his namesake’s deah:

“I won’t say I adjusted well or it didn’t bother me, but I was talking to him a few days before, so I understood what was going on,” Ferguson said.

“It was more of a shock to the world, put it like that. It was still a very big tragedy, but I got through it. I’m still getting through it. I won’t say I’m over it, but I’m working on it, I guess.”

With his father’s image now looming larger than ever, the spotlight is on ‘Baby Slice’ as he takes his turn to fight in the big leagues. Bellator 160 will go down on August 26 in Anaheim, California. Headlined by Benson Hendeson vs. Patricio Freire, the addition of Kevin Ferguson Jr. adds a little spice and nostalgia to the card.
