When Kevin Lee made his walk to the Octagon last week for his interim title fight against Tony Ferguson at UFC 216, mixed martial arts (MMA) fans were almost instantly informed “The Motown Phenom” was suffering from a staph infection on his chest.

UFC commentator Joe Rogan pointed it out on the broadcast, and UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier followed up by confirming he believed it was, in fact, a staph infection. On a recent episode of his podcast ‘Talk & Talker,’ Cormier discussed being a part of the UFC 216 broadcast and noted that the commentary team was told not to mention the staph infection – but stated he did anyway (quotes via MMA Mania):

“So we’re on air, right, and Rogan goes ‘is that staph?’” Cormier said. “And somebody in my ear, I don’t know who it is, goes ‘don’t say nothing.’ And I was like ‘What the hell? Do I address this, or do I not say anything?’”

“So I was like ‘it is.’ I couldn’t help myself, I go ‘it is staph.’ Because it’s big and red, and raised up.”

Lee has noted before that having staph may have impacted his ability to cut weight as well as his performance inside the Octagon, as he suffered a third-round submission loss via triangle choke to Tony Ferguson for the interim lightweight title. Cormier also discussed the negative affects staph has on an athlete’s performance:

“The issue is you can take antibiotics to get better. But again, antibiotics, it’s the devil when you’re getting ready for a fight because it f*cks with your cardio,” Cormier explained. “You don’t really have much of an option in terms of feeling better when you have staph.

“In training, you go ‘oh my goodness, what is this? It might me staph.’ You stop, you get on antibiotics, and you get better. When you’re a week from the biggest fight of your career, you go ‘oh shit, this is staph, but I gotta keep training.’ You don’t have the option to just shut it down.”

Cormier believes Lee didn’t get a ‘fair shake’ due to the fact that he was getting tired as the fight went on, while Ferguson was on his game and getting better:

“For Kevin Lee, he had no option because he couldn’t not fight,” Cormier said. “And you saw it, I mean between the second and third round, he told his corner, he goes ‘I’m just so tired.’”

“It’s sad because he didn’t get a fair shake, but the reality is, Tony Ferguson was on his game. And it was just getting worse because Tony was just getting better as the fight was going on.”

Interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson has finally fired back at Conor McGregor on Twitter.

McGregor won the UFC 155-pound title back in November when he knocked out Eddie Alvarez in the second round of their UFC 205 main event meeting. The Irishman became the first dual-weight champion in the promotion’s history and the third fighter (along with BJ Penn and Randy Couture) to have ever won UFC titles in different weight classes. After the fight, however, McGregor has yet to defend his title and instead ventured off into the world of professional boxing.

“The Notorious One” took on Floyd Mayweather in the first ever boxing match of his career but suffered a 10th round TKO loss to “Money.” In the midst of the fiasco that was Mayweather vs. McGregor, the UFC implemented an interim 155-pound championship that was contested for between Tony Ferguson and Kevin Lee.

Ferguson and Lee met in the main event of last week’s UFC 216 pay-per-view (PPV) and won the fight via third-round submission with a triangle choke. Now that Ferguson holds the interim title he will most likely be McGregor’s next opponent inside the Octagon. McGregor took to Twitter earlier this week and seemingly took a shot at “El Cucuy”:

Ferguson has since broken his silence on the matter and responded with a Grand Theft Auto-inspired callout of his own, posting a montage of photos from the video game with his face over the original characters. Check it out here:

Do you think Ferguson will be the next challenger for McGregor inside the Octagon? Who are you picking for the potential match-up? Let us know in the comments!

Following this past weekend’s (Sat. October 7, 2017) UFC 216 pay-per-view (PPV) the updated UFC rankings are in and newly-crowned interim lightweight champion Tony Ferguson has made the pound-for-pound (P4P) list.

In the main event of the card then-No. 2-ranked 155-pounder Tony Ferguson downed Kevin Lee via third round submission with a triangle choke to secure the interim title. The co-main event saw P4P king Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson set a record-breaking 11th consecutive title defense when he submitted Ray Borg with a ridiculous suplex-to-armbar to retain his flyweight crown.

Also on the card was a heavyweight match-up between former champion Fabricio Werdum, who easily submitted Walt Harris via armbar just a minute into their fight. You can check out the full UFC rankings update here below (courtesy of MMA Mania):

With weight cutting one of the most hotly-debated topics in MMA right now, UFC strawweight-turned-flyweight contender Paige VanZant recently shared her side of the story.

VanZant, who recently told Ariel Helwani on “The MMA Hour” that she had passed out in her bathroom in order to make the strawweight limit of 116 pounds for a previous bout, was set to take on Jessica Eye at last weekend’s (Sat., October 7, 2017) UFC 216 until a back injury delayed her return.

She won’t require surgery, however, and is hoping to return to the Octagon soon at a weight class that won’t drain her body and leave her at less than one hundred percent for the bout.

To illustrate just how draining the cut used to be, VanZant posted a picture of herself looking especially drawn during a cut to strawweight as she offered enthusiasm for her new home of 125 pounds:

A much more harrowing photo was later posted by TMZ, with VanZant lying topless on her floor, apparently emaciated from her attempt to make weight:

Obviously the photos show a brutal side of MMA where fighters will do almost anything – including risking their long-term health – in order to make weight for their next fight, something that became even more apparent when interim lightweight title contender Kevin Lee missed weight on his first attempt for his fight with Tony Ferguson at UFC 216.

Although he made weight on his second attempt, he admitted that the ordeal put his body through unneeded stress, and it’s something we’ve seen ruin seemingly countless bouts for the UFC throughout the year. Lee teased a move up to welterweight just as VanZant has already decided to move up to flyweight due to the sheer brutality of the cut.

It’s a problem the UFC and MMA as a whole need to address because situations like the one VanZant pictured herself in are taking years off of fighters’ lives, and only to have a perceived advantage over their opponents come fight time.

UFC lightweight Kevin Lee divulged Wednesday that his weight-cutting efforts prior to UFC 216 took a significant toll on him.

Speaking on Chael Sonnen’s You’re Welcome podcast (h/t Jed Meshew of MMA Fighting), Lee said he was out of it while trying to get under the limit:

“That last hour that I had to cut that extra pound, I don’t even know how I got it off. I don’t know where I was. Your mind just doesn’t want to work when you’re in those kind of states. … Like I said, I don’t even remember much. I don’t really know. I was kind of out of it and I just left it up to my coaches and they got the job done.”

Lee went on to lose to Tony Ferguson by submission in the third round via triangle choke.
