Paul Hughes PFL Usman Nurmagomedov

Ireland’s Paul Hughes got a huge win in the PFL debut as he took on the prodigy AJ McKee. Hughes was able to out-point his opponent with sharp counters and flying knees. After the victory, he wants the Bellator champion, and student of Khabib Nurmagomedov, Usman Nurmagomedov, but with Conor McGregor in his corner.

The former Cage Warriors champion signed with the PFL looking to become a world champion in the organization. In his debut, he was able to defeat the top-ranked, and ultra-talented, AJ McKee via split decision. The Irish-born Paul Hughes was able to out-point his opponent in an impressive victory and showed off his striking acumen.

After the fight, he called out the Bellator lightweight champion Usman Nurmagomedov who is a long-time student, and cousin, of MMA legend, Khabib Nurmagomedov. Hughes is very likely to face Usman next with the title on the line and in that bout, Khabib will be in his corner. For that, Hughes has requested that Conor McGregor be in his corner for the match.

Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor

Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor had one of the most bitter rivalries in MMA history. Their blockbuster match for the UFC world title was a major event and one of the biggest fights in the history of the sport. Khabib won but then a brawl broke out after the match.

Paul Hughes wins in the PFL

Speaking to the media after his PFL win, Paul Hughes explained:

Yeah, that’s obvious. [Usman Nurmagomedov] is what I want. I said I was here for the biggest fights, the highest-pressure moments, and to make the most money possible. Usman is next, no question. There’s a lot of hype around this fight, and I’m here for it.

On potentially having Conor McGregor in his corner, he added:

“How crazy would that be? We might need some extra security that night, though. We’ll need more security! But I’m down for it. It’ll be fun.”

Discussing his victory over AJ McKee, Hughes said:

“When you’re in there, it’s sometimes hard to tell, but judging from the energy of the crowd and AJ’s face, it’s pretty clear I won. I smashed him, walked him down, and put punches on him. I hurt him so many times. I was close to knocking him out a few times, but I didn’t get him out of there. I’ll 100% get him next time.”

Khabib Nurmagomedov "Sad" he never faced Tony Ferguson

Khabib Nurmagomedov regrets never fighting Tony Ferguson.

Once upon a time when ‘El Cucuy‘ was sitting on an incredible 12-fight win streak in the lightweight division, he was paired up with Nurmagomedov on no less than five occasions. The two fighters alternated withdrawals due to various injuries and weight-cutting issues before the final nail in the coffin came in 2020 when the UFC’s final attempt was called off due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Looking back on the fight that never was during an appearance on the Inspire Me Podcast, Nurmagomedov admitted to feeling sad that he never got the chance to compete against ‘El Cucuy’ inside the Octagon.

”I feel little bit sad,” Nurmagomedov revealed.

As for how their fight would have gone, ‘The Eagle’ believes Ferguson would have had a puncher’s chance, but that’s about it.

”My game is worse for him, he doesn’t have wrestling, grappling so what’s he gonna do with me? How’s he gonna stop me? Only chance he’d have to stop me is a lucky punch,” he continued. Like with everybody: Conor, Poirier, Justin Gaethje. They talk about ‘They can stop him if they get a lucky punch.” (h/t Sportskeeda).

Khabib vs. Tony Ferguson

Tony Ferguson has not won since his last attempt to fight Khabib fell through

Tony Ferguson currently finds himself on an eight-fight win streak dating back to May 2020, a month after his last attempt to fight Nurmagomedov fell through. Along the way, he’s suffered losses against lightweight stars including Justin Gaethje, Charles Oliveira, Michael Chandler, Nate Diaz, and Paddy Pimblett.

His latest defeat, a first-round submission at the hands of TUF alumnus Michael Chiesa, officially broke the streak for most losses in a row, previously held by former two-division champion B.J. Penn.

Everyone expected Ferguson to finally lay down his gloves and call it a career following the fight, but ‘El Cucuy’ continued to leave the door open for another fight, even if it meant competing outside of the UFC.

Sean O’Malley: Facing Umar Nurmagomedov with Khabib in His Corner Would Be a Career High

Sean O’Malley thinks Khabib Nurmagomedov’s presence could give his potential clash with Umar Nurmagomedov that big-fight feel.

The latter of the Dagestani MMA dynasty earned a big win inside the Octagon earlier this month, scoring a decisive decision victory over Cory Sandhagen. The victory pushed Umar Nurmagomedov into the No. 2 spot in the bantamweight rankings, setting him up to challenge the winner of next month’s title tilt between reigning 135-pound king Sean O’Malley and top-ranked contender Merab Dvalishvili.

O’Malley is not the kind of fighter to count his chickens before they hatch, but he can’t help but think about the big fight feel that would come with facing Umar Nurmagomedov. Especially if it means competing against the mind and coaching of Khabib Nurmagomedov who would undoubtedly be in his cousin’s corner.

“I never really thought about it but just kind of off the top of my head right now if I think about it, that would be cool. Khabib’s a legend, 29-0, and very disciplined, serious guy which would make it even more fun,” O’Malley told Red Corner MMA.

“It’d be hard to top that, like I guess beating Ilia or Max after that, like there’s guys you could top that with but it’d be hard to get too excited for. I don’t know, I’m thinking out loud right now. It would be cool” (h/t MMA News).

Sean O’Malley headlines once in a lifetime event at sphere in las vegas

Before O’Malley can even concern himself with the Dagestani wrestling attack of an undefeated Nurmagomedov, he’ll have to handle his toughest test yet when he meets streaking Georgian standout Merab Dvalishvili.

The two bantamweight warriors will square off on Saturday, September 14 when the promotion celebrates Mexican Independence Day inside Sphere in Las Vegas.

Dana White has promised an event unlike anything that’s ever been done before. Aside from the unique setting, UFC 306 will feature not one, but two exciting championship clashes. The first will feature a trilogy bout as Alexa Grasso returns to defend her flyweight title against Valentina Shevchenko.

Grasso shocked the world at UFC 285, scoring a fourth-round submission victory over ‘Bullet’ to kickstart her 125-pound reign. Later that year, Grasso and Shevchenko ran it back, but the bout was controversially ruled a split draw.

Khabib Nurmagomedov’s Coach Comments on Tony Ferguson’s losing streak and his post-UFC Potential

Tony Ferguson

Javier Mendez, the legendary coach of UFC Hall of Famer Khabib Nurmagomedov, believes there are plenty of options for Tony Ferguson outside of the Octagon.

‘El Cucuy’ suffered his seventh-straight loss under the UFC banner at the promotion’s final pay-per-view of the year, dropping a unanimous decision to rising UK-based contender Paddy Pimblett. Now tied with BJ Penn for the most consecutive losses in UFC history, many fight fans expected Tony Ferguson to lay down his gloves following the defeat. However, the moment never came.

Instead, Ferguson stormed out of the Octagon as soon as the decision was announced and then proceeded to suggest that his career was still far from over.

Speaking about Ferguson’s career trajectory, Mendez believes that there are a lot of lucrative options outside of the UFC, should ‘El Cucuy’ move on from his time with the Las Vegas-based promotion. But whether or not he retires is for nobody, but him to decide.

“Well, number one, the UFC releasing him at this stage might benefit them,” Mendez said on his podcast. “Before it didn’t because he was still a needle-mover. He’s really good for advertising, hyping fights up. Tony’s still good at that. So, the fact that there’s bare-knuckle fighting, the fact that there’s other organizations out there it means that Tony still has a job if he wants to, a high-paying job ’cause people pay to watch him.

“So, I think he probably needs to really look at himself now because that’s seven in a row, and he keeps changing things up. Father time’s catching him up more. It’s gonna be up to him and his family, but I don’t want to say he should retire. That’s on him” (h/t MMAKnockout.com).

Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov were scheduled to scrap for the lightweight world title on no less than five separate occasions. Each time, the bout fell through for one reason or another. The last attempt came in April 2020, but the bout was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A month later, ‘El Cucuy’ would go on to fight Justin Gaethje in the first of his seven straight defeats.

UFC CEO Dana White Believes ‘Khabib’s crew in Dagestan’ could Conquer soft, weak America, Nate Diaz reacts

Dana White

It’s no secret that Dana White is not a fan of the next generation.

The UFC CEO and staunch Trump supporter has gone on record multiple times expressing his dislike for this generation of “f*cking p*ssies” and the lack of savages willing to go out and put in the work for what they want.

In fact, Dana White believes that the country has gone so soft that Khabib Nurmagomedov and his crew in Dagestan could walk right in and take over.

“If we go to war right now, are you confident in this generation that we have right now? That these guys are gonna go out and storm some f*cking beach somewhere? There’s a small, handful of people,” White said during an appearance on the Full Send podcast. “Most of them probably down around the bible belt and down south that will actually f*cking stand up and fight for this f*cking country right now.

“It’s scary. Khabib’s crew in Dagestan could probably come in and take over this f*cking country right now because this generation is such a bunch of f*cking p*sses. We’re getting soft. We’re getting weak. Every 10 years we get softer and weaker” (h/t MMA Mania).

Nate Diaz Responds to Dana White’s Gripe with the next generation

Former UFC fan favorite Nate Diaz sided with White on the country’s increase in weaklings, but he’s not about to stand aside and let ‘The Eagle’ and his cronies take anything from him.

“Agreed,” Diaz wrote on Instagram. “But kabob and his friends ain’t gonna do sh*t.”

White conceded that every generation usually believes the next one in line is softer than the last, but the lack of respect for police, military, and the country is his main gripe with Gen Z.

“To be fair, I think every generation thinks the next generation is soft,” White continued. “If you look at all the sh*t that’s going on in the world right now, there’s no respect for the police anymore, there’s no respect for the military. There’s no respect for our country, our freedom, our way of life that we have here. You can sit around and nitpick and talk about things that are wrong with the United States.

Let me tell you something, your generation, my generation, everybody’s generation … this is it. If this falls, there’s no other f*cking place to go.”

Do you agree with Dana White’s harsh assessment of today’s youth, or does the UFC CEO just sound like every other multi-millionaire curmudgeon?

Khamzat Chimaev

Khamzat Chimaev has talked about the fact many are comparing him to UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov after just two fights inside MMA’s premier promotion.

Chimaev defeated John Phillips at middleweight in his UFC debut before taking on Rhys McKee at welterweight just 10 days’ later – making company history in the process.

In the UFC Fight Island 3 post-fight press conference Chimaev spoke confidently about how easy he finds fighting despite stepping up his level of competition, he said.

“Of course it easy for me. I born from this country when I was kid, it was war in my country. Everyone know Chechnya, like before how they was. I like to fight in the cage, and smash someone, it’s too easy. Too easy. Smash someone. Get money, brother. It’s perfect for me.

Chimaev commented on people comparing him to Nurmagomedov by saying he will soon replace the undefeated champion as the pound-for-pound number one.

“I like this guy, this guy is, I think I don’t know, pound for pound number one?” Chimaev said. “Yeah, I think he’s pound for pound number one. He’s 28 wins? Yeah. But soon … I’m going to be pound for pound number one. I’m gonna be champion. I have eight fights, eight finishes. I destroyed everybody. I’m going to do this. Next fight also.”

The 26-year-old is in no rush to claim UFC gold but feels like it is in an evitable part of his future which he predicts will happen sooner rather than later,  he said.

“For me it doesn’t matter. I don’t know, but I want to take this belt in one, two years? As soon as possible I’m going to take this. I know it’s not like movie, like Rocky Balboa. Like he want to fight and get the title shot. I’m going to take this soon.”

Once he does become champion Chimaev hopes to use his position and the money obtained through it for good.

“To help somebody,” he said. “I do this not only for me. I do this for everybody I can help. I don’t want to be like Mayweather, like McGregor, be one of the guys to show my money, show my cars like something like that. I want to help the people.” (Transcribed by MMA Mania)

Do you think Khamzat Chimeav will replace Khabib Nurmagomedov as the best pound-for-pound fighter in MMA?
