No. 1-ranked UFC lightweight contender Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov was slated to meet No. 2-ranked Tony Ferguson at March 4’s UFC 209 for the interim 155-pound title, but he was forced to withdraw from the bout just a day prior after suffering from weight cutting issues that caused him to be hospitalized.

Nurmagomedov and Ferguson have now been scheduled to meet multiple times, although the bout has yet to come to fruition. With lightweight king Conor McGregor’s future uncertain, Nurmagomedov vs. Ferguson is the fight to make, and according to ex-middleweight champion Luke Rockhold, who trains with “The Eagle”, the UFC should re-book the bout:

“(It’s) unfortunate,” said Rockhold during a recent appearance on Submission Radio. “That was the fight I was really looking forward to for Khabib and it’s been a long time working with that man and I know he’s put in the time and the effort and deserved it, so it just sucks.

“From what I understand he wasn’t getting any blood to his liver and something went wrong with the weight cut. It was very similar to his last fight from what I understand and just something went wrong. You never know with these weight cuts I guess. But I think he’s ready to go and we can re-book that thing.”

Rockhold even went as far to say that the fight ‘can’t’ be taken away from Nurmagomedov, despite his history with injuries and weight cutting issues:

“I don’t think it should take much time. I think he’s hungry, I think he’s ready,” added Rockhold. “What other choice do you have? Khabib is undefeated, he’s beaten everybody, he’s done more than anybody. You can’t take that fight away, you can’t take the title away. It just needs to be re-booked. I think it should be re-booked as soon as possible”

Do you agree with Rockhold’s comments?

Top lightweight contenders Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov and Tony “El Cucuy” Ferguson will face off in a pivotal interim lightweight title bout in the co-main event of this weekend’s (Sat., March 4, 2017) UFC 209 from Las Vegas, Nevada, with a shot at reigning champion Conor McGregor seemingly hanging in the balance.

Ferguson is riding an incredible nine fight win streak and he plans to keep that going against Nurmagomedov. In fact, Ferguson is planning to ‘slice and dice’ “The Eagle” before finishing him, which will leave no need for a rematch in his opinion:

“(Expletive) no (there won’t ever be a rematch),” Ferguson told MMAJunkie at today’s UFC 209 open workouts. “Not after I finish him the way I’m going to finish him. It’s different. I’m going to slice and dice him. With the new rules as far as the UFC goes, he’s got something else coming for him. I’m keeping these (elbows) sharp like medal graters. There’s sparks flying, baby.”

While the two 155-pound titans have traded barbs in the media leading up to the bout, Ferguson admits that he has nothing but respect for Nurmagomedov, although he also said that the two have ‘beef’ inside the cage:

“You can love somebody without liking them,” Ferguson said. “I love Khabib, man. He’s my brother in arms. We’re all here, we’re all for one. I got peace with him, but inside there we got beef. We got to squash this (expletive). I’m tired of him, man. He’s a bully, and I’m going to shut him up, but I got respect for him, his father and his whole camp.”

No. 1-ranked UFC lightweight contender Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov is set to take on No. 2-ranked Tony Ferguson in the co-main event of this weekend’s (Sat., March 4, 2016) UFC 209 from Las Vegas, Nevada.

The winner of the bout will be crowned the interim 155-pound champion, and while he’s focused on winning the belt, Nurmagomedov admits that he’s ‘worried’ about the fame that comes with it:

“Honest, I worry about (becoming) famous. Of course I want a belt, but with belt comes that crazy attention,” said Khabib on “The MMA Hour.” “To be honest, I worry about that because I like it when people don’t know me.”

Being a champion and being a star in mixed martial arts brings tremendous responsibilities, especially within the media. “The Eagle” said that, at times, he gets ‘tired’ of talking about fighting, although he knows it’s all part of the process:

“All the time people talk about fights, fights, all the time people talk about MMA — I can talk with people about other stuff, not just MMA. Sometimes I am tired about this, but I understand. MMA is crazy now, it’s not like 10 years ago. MMA is one of the biggest sports in the world and I think after this fight its going to change a lot of things.”

The undefeated Nurmagomedov is coming off of a brutal submission victory over Michael Johnson last November at UFC 205 in New York. Ferguson, on the other hand, is riding an incredible nine fight winning streak, and is coming off of a victory over former champion Raphael dos Anjos.

Khabib Nurmagomedov: Conor McGregor Has Disrespected UFC

Undefeated No. 1-ranked lightweight contender Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov will face off with red hot No. 2-ranked Tony Ferguson in the co-main event of March 4’s UFC 209 from Las Vegas, Nevada with the interim lightweight title hanging in the balance. The winner is hoping to land a bout with 155-pound king Conor McGregor.

Recently speaking at a Q&A event (Via MMAFighting.com) in his home country, “The Eagle” said that McGregor has not been loyal and that he has disrespected the UFC:

“I think if Conor has one fan, I have 20 times more fans than him,” he said at the National Restaurant and Night Club. “I think UFC has to make plans a little bit, because this chicken is not loyal. If you remember, the first time he fought in the UFC, and he talked like, ‘$50K baby,’ something like this. He asked Dana please give me $50K. The UFC made him. If he had never fought in the UFC, how would he have got like this?

“Now he’s talking about I can fight without the UFC in boxing, you know. For me, this is disrespectful of the UFC.”

Rather than speaking on potential challenges inside the Octagon, McGregor has often expressed interest in a boxing match with retired former pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather.

Nurmagomedov doesn’t seem to be too interested in this possibility, however, as he said that he hopes to humble the Irishman:

“I wanted to say to the UFC, I can help these guys,” he said. “We can make the other guy humble, because we remember how he asked for $50,000. Now he talking about he can make this [Mayweather] fight without the UFC. I don’t worry about my PR, because in Dagestan and Russia, I’m a bit worried about how I become popular because before I never feel this pressure. And that’s why I don’t think about this.

“But why not, we can make this guy humble. Smash this guy if the UFC wants.”

Do you expect Nurmagomedov to get by Ferguson and take on McGregor later this year?

Tony Ferguson Can’t Wait To ‘Mop The Mat’ With Khabib Nurmagomedov

No. 1-ranked UFC lightweight contender Khabib Nurmagomedov and No. 2-ranked Tony Ferguson will do battle in the co-main event of March 4’s UFC 209 for the interim 155-pound title, but the bout almost didn’t come to fruition, as Ferguson was dealing with contract issues with the UFC.

The fight is now set, however, and “El Cucuy” said that the promotion met his standards financially:

“They met my standards,” Ferguson told MMAjunkie Radio. “Khabib’s offer I threw right out the window immediately. That was some trashy kind of thing. But we’re good to good. We’re full swing ahead. … We worked out financial terms. I’ve earned my stripes in this division. I’ve put in my time. I’ve put in my work. I’ve put in my effort, especially when no fans were watching when I didn’t have cameras on me.

“I don’t need anybody to believe in me besides myself, because every single day I go in there and I beat myself up that was so I can go out there and I can kick some ass. I know what I’m worth and I know my numbers, and that dude’s padded record is nowhere near my contention, my type of fights that I’ve had and presented to the world.”

As far as the fight itself goes, it is undoubtedly one of the most competitive fights taking place in the foreseeable future, as Nurmagomedov possesses a perfect 24-0 record, while Ferguson is riding an impressive 10 fight win streak.

“El Cucuy”, however, feels as if he’s a ‘different animal’:

“I’m a whole completely different animal, and he’s never seen anyone as ferocious as me inside that octagon. I’m going to put fear in this kid. I can’t wait to slam this dude. I can’t wait to mop the mat with this guy.”

The two have gone back-and-forth in the media over the last few months, stirring up quite a rivalry. Ferguson even went as far as to compare “The Eagle” to a ‘stalker ex-girlfriend’:

“He’s telling me to go train and shut up?” Ferguson said. “I’m like, ‘Man, you talk too much already, son. You talk too much. You are looking at me and you responded in like 2.2 minutes, son. You’re worse than a stalker ex-girlfriend. You’re looking at me like a hawk, an eagle and I want you to do that because you’re going to be stressing about what I’m going to do.”
