UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor hasn’t competed since winning the 155-pound strap with a brutal second round TKO victory over Eddie Alvarez at this past November’s UFC 205 from New York. The Irishman is currently awaiting the birth of his first child, which could keep him on the sidelines for the foreseeable future.

While McGregor’s name is constantly linked to a potential boxing match with Floyd Mayweather in the media, a more likely return fight for him would be a title fight against the winner of March 4’s interim lightweight title fight between top contenders Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson.

Nurmagomedov and McGregor have seemed to stir up a bit of a rivalry in recent months, and many feel as if “The Eagle” would present problems for the “Notorious” one given his decorated wrestling background. McGregor’s training partner Dillon Danis, however, feels as if Nurmagomedov is ‘too easily hit’:

“He’s too easily hit,” Danis told Submission Radio about Nurmagomedov. “If you saw in the Michael Johnson fight, he was getting like wobbled and rocked every time they were on the feet. So Conor is going to pick him apart like he does all the wrestlers.”

With that being said, the outspoken Brazilian jiu-jitsu champion feels as if McGregor would finish Nurmagomedov in ‘one or two rounds’ if the two were to eventually meet in the Octagon:

“He hits you from everywhere and he kicks you in the stomach,” Danis continued. “And people don’t see those shots on TV, like some of those teep kicks and some of the kicks to the stomach, but those take the wind out of you. And when you basically have to take someone down, it puts a different kind of feeling in your stomach ad in your gut when you have to take the guy down. The guy’s beating you up on the feet, and when you go to the ground he’s elbowing you. So I think Conor puts him away in probably one or two rounds with strikes.”

McGregor’s striking is clearly his bread and butter and he’s proven that it’s amongst the best in the sport today, but many have and likely will continue to question his grappling skills. Danis, however, isn’t worried about Nurmagomedov’s relentless takedown attempts:

“What happened to Eddie doing that though? That’s what people said that Eddie was gonna do that and then he couldn’t even come close to taking Conor down. Nate couldn’t come close to taking Conor down. They all think they’re going to do something until they get in there. I train with the guy every day when I’m out there in Ireland, so I know what he’s capable of, and that’s definitely not going to happen.”

McGregor’s fighting future is almost always unclear and Nurmagomedov will need to get by Ferguson in March, but would you like to see these two 155 pounders do battle later this year?

Earlier today (Jan. 2, 2017), No. 1-ranked UFC lightweight contender Khabib Nurmagomedov offered No. 2-ranked Tony Ferguson $200,000 to fight him. The bout, which has been rumored to in the works, hasn’t come to fruition just yet due to Ferguson being in contract disputes with the promotion, although it is a fight that makes quite a bit of sense.

As far as the contract dispute goes, Ferguson said on today’s edition of The MMA Hour that he isn’t sure why he isn’t being paid as he’d like to be by the UFC. “El Cucuy” has said that he’d like to be compensated in the same way that “The Eagle” is and he added in that there’s no reason why he shouldn’t be:

“I’m not sure, man. You ask them. Ask them why they’re not paying me, and maybe we’ll get some answers,” Ferguson said. “I haven’t had the opportunities that they have (given Nurmagomedov), as far as, over the past five fights, I’ve only been on one pay-per-view. All the rest have been on FOX Sports 1 cards, which limits my mainstream exposure. Khabib has been on three pay-per-views and two UFC on FOXs, which draws much larger audiences than FOX Sports 1 cards.”

“Despite this, there’s nothing that suggests that Khabib draws any larger than me. I haven’t been given the same opportunities or the same push as Khabib. I don’t belong to AKA or a big major sport’s program. I choose to do different things on my own and I’m building my own legacy, my own facilities, but that’s later on. That’s a completely different subject. So, as far as compensation goes, like I said, the UFC has been known to change it (for a particular fight) over their history, and I’m just looking for them to get this thing going, man. Let’s go. Let’s go, UFC.”

Fighter pay has long been a debated topic and Ferguson feels as if Nurmagomedov’s offer illuminates the problems within the system. As for right now, however, the surging contender encourages fans to get ‘anxious’ about the potential bout:

“But for right now, I’m enjoying my time. The fans, you guys need to get anxious, man. Let’s get some chatter going. Let’s get the UFC involved with this. If you’ve got Khabib willing to sacrifice his life and give me $200,000 of his own money, something’s wrong with that sh*t. I’m not going to take that guy’s money. He’s got a family too. So do I, and he’s got bills to pay. So I’m not going after Khabib’s. All I want is my stuff right and to be compensated for what my numbers prove to be, so let’s go kids.”

Ferguson has made a name for himself by winning an incredible nine straight as well as most recently beating former champion Rafael dos Anjos. Would you like to see him take on Nurmagomedov next?

With UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor appearing to be taking a break after winning the title at Nov. 12’s UFC 205 from New York, No. 1-ranked Khabib Nurmagomedov and No. 2-ranked Tony Ferguson have expressed interest in fighting each other. In fact, the idea of pairing the two against each other with an interim title on the line has even been tossed around.

Despite the bout obviously making sense from a rankings standpoint, it has yet to be made mainly due to the fact that Ferguson is in contract disputes with the promotion. ‘El Cucuy” has said that he would like to be paid the same as Nurmagomedov, a request that UFC President Dana White doesn’t seem to fond of.

“The Eagle”, on the other hand, simply wants the fight signed and he recently offered to pay Ferguson to make the fight happen:

Nurmagomedov currently boasts an incredible 24-0 professional record and is coming off of a dominant decision victory over Michael Johnson. “The Eagle” is also riding an eight fight UFC win streak.

Ferguson, on the other hand, has been red hot as of late, compiling nine straight victories inside the Octagon. “El Cucuy” is coming off of a decision victory over former champion Rafael dos Anjos.

What do you make of Nurmagomedov’s offer and would you like to see this fight?

Jose Aldo: Holloway Is Ducking Me, UFC Offered Me Lightweight Title Fight

While Conor McGregor still claims that he is a two-weight UFC world champion, the promotion did indeed strip him of his 145-pound title a few weeks back, making Jose Aldo, a man McGregor knocked out in just 13 seconds to steal the title last December, the undisputed champion once again. Since suffering that harrowing loss at UFC 194 in Las Vegas, Aldo has campaigned for a rematch with the “Notorious” one, but at this point, it appears as if McGregor’s days at featherweight are practically over.

The Irishman moving up in weight doesn’t necessarily mean Aldo’s chances of landing a rematch are gone, however, but if they are, he can be at peace at with that as long as his title is around his waist:

Champion

“Yeah, I’d have peace,” Aldo recently told MMAFighting.com’s Ariel Helwani. “No problem. I’m an athlete, so of course, it would be nice to have the rematch, but it’s not something that would take away my peace. I think there’s only one thing that would take away my peace and that’s if I wasn’t the champion. My objective since I started my career was: become the champion, remain the champion, retire the champion.”

Now back at the helm at 145-pounds, Aldo was expected to defend his title next against surging Hawaiian Max Holloway, who recently stopped Anthony Pettis at UFC 206 in Toronto to become the interim champion. Aldo even said after that bout that he and Holloway would be fighting at UFC 208 in Brooklyn, although that doesn’t seem to be the plan anymore.

“Scarface” actually said that he was offered an interim lightweight title bout instead:

Conor McGregor-Jose Aldo-Khabib Nurmagomedov

Ducking…

“No, the Brooklyn fight is not happening,” he said. “I now expect and believe I will be fighting in early March. Either March 3 or March 4, I can’t remember. I believe they will soon announce an interim lightweight title fight with me. They’ve been trying to find me an opponent, and — surprise, surprise — at least one has already turned down the fight against me. I’m waiting to see who they will find.”

After that fight, Holloway said a bunch of different things. First, I heard he twisted his ankle and wouldn’t have time to heal. Then I heard he had a trip booked to Disney World with his kids and he wouldn’t be able to reschedule. Then I heard his gym is closed during the holidays and he wouldn’t have enough time to train. So he’s basically going around, talking a lot of trash, saying a lot of bullshit and acting like a punk. He just talking shit.

As far as who exactly turned down the bout, Aldo was reluctant to name names:

“You gotta ask the UFC that. They’ve asked me not to say anything. I won’t say who it is because it’s a surprise. A guy we never thought would turn it down turned it down, because his father didn’t think it was good. I’m tired of people turning down fights. I want to put some pressure so they’ll take the fight.”

With McGregor reportedly taking a break after winning the lightweight strap last month, there were rumors of a potential interim title bout being booked between top contenders Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson. Aldo throwing his name into this mix is certainly an intriguing turn of events.

After Conor McGregor won the UFC lightweight title with a dominant performance over Eddie Alvarez at Nov. 12’s UFC 205 from New York, it was unclear who he would defend his title against for the first time, that is if he even plans on defending it next.

Nonetheless, the two leading candidates appeared to be undefeated No. 1-contender Khabib “The Eagle” Nurmagomedov and No. 2-ranked surging contender Tony “El Cucuy” Fergson. It was then announced that McGregor would likely be stepping away from the Octagon for 10 months, and it now appears as if the UFC may be looking to book Nurmagomedov and Ferguson against each other.

The two have been scheduled to fight before, but the bout has always fell through. Now according to a report from MMAFighting’s Ariel Helwani, the two could potentially meet at UFC 209 with an interim title on the line, although nothing is signed as of now:

“The Eagle” is 8-0 inside the UFC and is coming off of a one-sided submission victory over Michael Johnson. Ferguson, on the other hand, is riding an incredible nine fight win streak and is coming off of a decision victory over former champion Rafael dos Anjos.

What do you make of the UFC possibly creating another interim title?
