It didn’t take long for Conor McGregor to put down Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Nurmagomedov retired from mixed martial arts with a 29-0 record following his impressive second-round submission win over Justin Gaethje at UFC 254 this past weekend.

Some observers have since declared him as the greatest fighter of all time while many others believe he is currently the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world today.

What cannot be denied, however, are the various accomplishments of “The Eagle” which will almost certainly be hard to match. And although he posted a sincere message to Nurmagomedov shortly after his retirement, the Irishman later took issue with some of these accomplishments which were posted by MMA Junkie’s Mike Bohn.

The first one being that Nurmagomedov is one of three Russian-born UFC champions.

“Rushed work Michael,” McGregor tweeted. “Andre’s Belorussian, and the reason the Belarus flag is on the newly designed belt. Along with 7 other countries of the first Champion winners. Oleg Taktarov is the other Russian winner you seek. Although in tournament format it was without an official belt.

“The first official UFC belt was presented at, yes you guessed it, UFC Twelve. Mark Coleman the winner, ensuring America’s flag on today’s new belt design. Alongside Netherlands,Bas. Canada,Carlos. Belarus,Andre. Brazil,Bustamante. Poland,Joanna. England,Michael. Ireland,Conor ??

McGregor would then put down the rest of the accomplishments on the list.

“Also… the rest of those stats are garbage. Multiple tied seconds, most takedowns in a division bar someone else, etc etc. It’s a garbage list full of overstretched accomplishments.”

While McGregor does have a point that many of those records are tied with other fighters, the one thing Nurmagomedov trumps everybody with, of course, is that unparalleled 29-fight winning streak.

What do you make of McGregor’s response?

Khabib ‘The Eagle’ Nurmagomedov’s route to last Saturday night’s UFC lightweight championship unification clash with interim champion, Justin ‘The Highlight’ Gaethje was filled with adversity including the unfortunate passing of his coach and father, Abdulmanap earlier this year – as well a broken foot which he suffered three week’s prior to the contest.

Khabib, who announced his sudden retirement from professional mixed martial arts after his main event clash with Gaethje, did so as the undisputed UFC lightweight champion, sitting at a perfect 29-0 to boot.

Taking on Elevation Fight Team staple, Gaethje in the unification clash, Khabib sealed his legacy with a second-round triangle, choking the Arizonian unconscious, before an emotional post-fight interview with promotional commentator, Jon Anik in which he announced his decision to hang up his gloves, following a discussion with his mother – citing how he wasn’t willing to make another Octagon walk without his father by his side.

The 32-year-old Sambo specialist, who largely wasn’t expected to continue his professional career beyond the thirty-fight mark, noted the expected upcoming clash of former opponents, Dustin ‘The Diamond’ Poirier, and ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor at UFC 257 in January, explaining how he’s not interested in that potential fight – having scored victories against both.

Following the poignant interview with Anik – UFC president, Dana White noted how he was hearing rumblings Khabib had suffered an injury prior to the event, and how the mixed martial arts community as a whole was lucky to see him step foot into the Octagon at UFC 254.

“”Listen, man, what he’s (Khabib Nurmagomedov‘s) been through, we’re all lucky we got to see him fight tonight,” White said. “And I’m hearing rumours of other things that I didn’t know about, that you guys will hear about when he comes out later I’m sure.

Apparently, he was in the hospital – he broke his foot. Three weeks ago. So he has two broken toes and a bone in his foot that’s broken, or something like that. That’s what his corner was telling me. And never told anybody – [was] walking around, I mean, he is one of the toughest human beings on the planet and he is just – he’s the number-one pound-for-pound fighter in the world. And seriously, you have to start putting him up there at G.O.A.T. status, whoever else you think is the G.O.A.T.

Posting to his official Instagram earlier this week, Nurmagomedov shared images of his broken foot as well as an x-ray scan of the injury.

With Khabib’s decision to call time on a gleaming professional career which came to a conclusion with a trio of successful title defence submissions against the division’s most dangerous strikers, McGregor, Poirier, and Gaethje – the promotion will have to put together some sort of matchup or format to crown a new undisputed champion in Khabib’s absence.

So far, seven-fight streaking contender, Charles Oliveira has called for his inclusion in any discussion of a vacant lightweight title fight, while former three-time Bellator lightweight best, Michael Chandler has floated the idea of a four-man tournament involving himself, both Poirier and McGregor, as well as rumoured foe, Tony Ferguson.

The former UFC light-heavyweight champion, Jon Jones has continued to shut down people who claim Khabib Nurmagomedov is the best fighter in MMA history.

In the immediate aftermath of Numagomedov’s second-round submission win over Justin Gaethje at UFC 254, Jones defended his status as pound-for-pound number one and declared himself the best fighter ever.

A couple of days on and Jones has elaborated on his claims, explaining why he, not Nurmagomedov should be recognized by fans and fighters as the greatest of all-time.

“I’m talking to all you Khabib fans out there,” Jones said on Instagram. “Fifteen world titles to your guy’s four. And you guys really talking about who’s the best fighter ever? You guys are joking, right? Fifteen to four, are you guys kidding me?” In Jones’ estimation, there is one fighter who could edge him out of the No. 1 slot when all is said and done. However, it would require the said fighter to come out of retirement and win two more title fights – and for Jones (26-1 MMA, 20-1 UFC) never win UFC title gold again. “”The only person who could possibly come back and challenge my record and what I’ve done in the UFC is possibly Georges St-Pierre,” Jones said. “He’d have to come back and win two championship fights to tie me. And I’m not even retired yet. I’m 33 years old. We’ve got a whole other chapter to go through. You guys are nuts. I love you guys so much. I hope you guys all have a great day. Fifteen world championships to four and all you guys that are going with this, ‘He’s more dominant,’ argument? The guy just recently started fighting elite-level competition. Could you imagine me against the No. 10 ranked guy?” (Transcribed by MMA Junkie)

Do you think Jon Jones is right? Is calling Khabib Nurmagomedov the GOAT premature?
