UFC lightweight title contender Tony Ferguson took the classy way out when when he reacted to his anticipated UFC 209 interim title fight against undefeated Khabib Nurmagomedov being called off last Friday.

However, that doesn’t mean “El Cucuy” is going to angle for a fourth attempt to fight the oft-injured “Eagle.” Ferguson told TMZ Sports he believes he will be next in line for the Holy Grail of MMA bouts, a sure to be massive lightweight championship fight against champ Conor McGregor:

“Conor’s next. I hear he might be next. There’s nobody else in line, buddy. I just want to fight. I’m ready to go.”

Ferguson has a strong point when he suggested there’s “no one else in line” in terms of true lightweight rank, as the promotion will almost certainly be hesitant to book Nurmagomedov in a high-profile title fight anytime soon after his latest pullout.

Where “El Cucuy” is a bit off base is suggesting he’s the only man in line for McGregor, as “The Notorious” is of course aiming for the huge payday of his oft-rumored boxing super fight with Floyd Mayweather.

It seems a mere eventuality, but that’s keeping McGregor out of the octagon, where several more high-profile fights with names like Tyron Woodley, Georges St-Pierre, a trilogy match with Nate Diaz, or even his brother Nick Diaz all provide tantalizing potential and would arguably each outgross a McGregor-Ferguson lightweight title match-up.

With that the case, Ferguson left the door open for quite possibly not facing McGregor next, adding that he does not care whom he fights:

“It doesn’t matter man. We’ll see what they say.”

What will the UFC say? They may not have much of one if the brash Irish megastar is truly holding out for the mega-payday that comes along with facing an undefeated once-in-a-generation star like Mayweather.

And if he does get a check worth between $50 to $200 million, what incentive would McGregor have to ever return to the UFC?

Khabib Nurmagomedov’s lightweight title opportunity may have just fallen into the lap of Nate Diaz.

Well, at least according to former UFC light heavyweight and middleweight title challenger and current Bellator MMA competitor Chael Sonnen. Following the conclusion of the UFC 209 pay-per-view (PPV) this past weekend (Sat. March 4, 2017), Sonnen and UFC lightweight Gilbert Melendez took to ESPN to discuss Nurmagomedov’s failure to make weight for his scheduled co-main event meeting with Tony Ferguson.

‘The Eagle’ and ‘El Cucuy’ were slated to meet for the interim 155-pound title, however, Nurmagomedov was hospitalized early on weigh-in morning due to weight cutting complications. Sonnen stated that Nurmagomedov’s inability to make weight, and the bout’s subsequent scrapping, may have just cost the Russian his shot at UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor in his home-country; opening up the door for Nate Diaz to swoop in (quotes courtesy of Bloody Elbow):

“This caused Khabib Nurmagomedov long term effects,” Sonnen said. “I’ll tell you the politics here. Dana White comes back from Russia, announces that he has a new TV deal. 48 hours later, he announces that the winner of Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Tony Ferguson will be taking on Conor McGregor.

“You don’t need to put on your Colombo rain jacket to realize, Conor McGregor vs the favorite, Khabib Nurmagomedov was going to happen on the debut of the Russian TV deal. It is likely gone!” he said. “And I believe it goes to Nate Diaz.”

McGregor and Diaz have quite the history with one another as the Stockton Native subbed in for Rafael dos Anjos at UFC 196 last March, when the Brazilian was forced out of his scheduled lightweight title defense against ‘The Notorious One’ with a broken foot. Diaz went on to submit McGregor in the second round of their contest via rear-naked choke, handing the Irish knockout artist the first loss of his UFC career.

The pair rematched in the main event of UFC 202 last August in which McGregor took home the majority decision win, making them 1-1 against one another in their mixed martial arts (MMA) careers. A trilogy bout with the 155-pound title on the line (after both of their previous matches took place at welterweight) would be a massive event to cap off their legendary feud with each other.

It appears that the MMA gods do not want Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson to fight each other despite the interest from fight fans across the world wanting to see that fight happen. For the third time now, they did not fight each other. Nurmagomedov and Ferguson’s highly-anticipated lightweight match-up was scrapped when Nurmagomedov was rushed to the hospital the day before the weigh-ins prior to Saturday’s (March 4, 2017) UFC 209 pay-per-view (PPV) event. He was unable to compete in his scheduled interim lightweight title match in the co-main event, which was dubbed as the people’s main event.

He took to Instagram to comment on not being able to fight this past weekend and issued an apology statement. He stated that he has received more than he asked for in life and that he apologizes to all of his fans for failing them.

“Whoever you are or whatever you do, you’ll get only what God prescribed for you. AlhamduliLlah for everything God gifted me for my 28 years, I got much more than I asked. I know that many people was waiting for this fight and I fail them. Want to bring my apologies for all my fans, UFC and my opponent Tony. My health is fine now, thanks God. These tough testing only makes me stronger. Thank everyone for the support. #Alhamdulillah”

It will be very interesting to see what the UFC does next with Nurmagomedov. He has issues with cutting down to 155 (lightweight), so maybe he will move up to welterweight for his next bout. Also, with that being said, it appears that Ferguson is the#1 contender for the UFC lightweight title, which is currently held by Conor McGregor.

Dana White Doesn’t Know What To Do With Khabib

For the third time Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson’s highly-anticipated lightweight match-up was scrapped when ‘The Eagle’ was hospitalized the day before weigh-ins prior to last night’s (Sat. March 4, 2017) UFC 209 pay-per-view (PPV) card, and was unable to compete in his scheduled interim lightweight title match in the co-main event.

UFC President Dana White commented on Nurmagomedov’s inability to compete on last night’s card, stating that he doesn’t know what the future holds for the Russian grappling specialist (quotes via MMA Junkie):

“To be honest with you, Khabib fought (at UFC 205) in New York in November then here in this fight,” White said. “Two back-to-back weight cuts like that. I don’t know if he can make the weight or if he needs to get a better plan (or) dietician. Something.

“I don’t know (what he should do). He got within six pounds and was in really rough shape. He’s going to have to take some time to recover from this weight cut, and then I don’t know what to do.”

White also criticized Nurmagomedov’s team’s handling of the whole situation in which he was hospitalized. The UFC President claimed the fight may have been able to be saved had ‘The Eagle’s’ team contacted to UFC instead of trying to handle everything on their own:

“So what would have been different is if he had called Dr. (Jeff) Davidson or Briana (Mattison), the two who handle all the medical stuff for the UFC, they would have brought him right to the hospital,” White said. “Apparently he was treated horrible at (Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center in Las Vegas). Shocker here in Vegas; that’s no shock. He should have gone to Valley Hospital (Medical Center). He should have been with (Dr. Davidson, who) would have taken him right in. They would have checked him right in and seen where he was.

“When you walk into just some random hospital here in Las Vegas and they see the guy and they tell him the weight cut, they just start filling him with fluids. That’s immediately what they do. They bring you in, they stick in the IV, and they start. (Dr. Davidson) would have checked his vitals, seen where he was. I’m not saying that the fight could have been saved, but maybe it could have. We’ve been in these positions before. This isn’t our first rodeo.”

White also stated that Nurmagomedov was experiencing pain in his kidney and liver areas, but doesn’t know the full extent of his condition. He did, however, note that it won’t affect Nurmagomedov in the long term, but recovery will take a bit of time:

“He was having pains either where your kidneys are or your liver or something – I don’t know the exact specifics, but he was having pains,” White said. “He looked terrible. I don’t think there was any real damage done to it. When I say damage, I mean longterm. It’s going to take him a little while to recover from this weight cut.”
