Conor McGregor conferred that moniker on himself for predicting—quite accurately—when and how his fights would end. But it turns out he’s pretty adept at predicting all sorts of things in the MMA world.
When word came Friday afternoon that lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov had fallen ill during his weight cut, thus canceling his much-anticipated top-contender scrap with Tony Ferguson Saturday at UFC 209, an old video clip of McGregor quickly resurfaced.
For those unaware, McGregor, the current lightweight champ, and Nurmagomedov, the undefeated phenom, have had plenty of verbal altercations since they each rose to prominence. Most recently, Nurmagomedov called McGregor “a chicken” in November at UFC 205.
Well, after yet another setback has stopped Nurmagomedov from competing—only three fights now in the past three years, for those keeping score—that sort of trash talking is looking a little hollow.
Not so much on the McGregor end of things.
McGregor also competed at UFC 205, knocking out Eddie Alvarez in the main event to capture the 155-pound strap. Afterward, when asked about Nurmagomedov’s chicken comments, McGregor took the opportunity to respond.
“Look, he’s only competed once in eight years,” McGregor said, with a slight exaggeration of numbers. “You know what I’m saying? He ain’t fight too frequent for my liking. …He’s a consistent pull-out merchant.”
Check the video for McGregor’s suddenly extra-prescient take on the Dagestani contender.

After a report surfaced this morning that interim lightweight title contender Khabib Nurmagomedov had been taken to a Las Vegas hospital prior to his championship bout with Tony Ferguson in the co-main event of tomorrow night’s (Sat., March 4, 2017) UFC 209 from the T-Mobile Arena, the awaited title bout has been officially called off by the UFC.
UFC lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov was transported to Sunrise Hospital & Medical Center Thursday evening due to weight management medical issues. He was treated and has been discharged, UFC officials confirmed.
The scheduled interim lightweight championship bout between Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson at UFC 209 has been cancelled on the doctor’s recommendation.
UFC 209 takes place Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, live on Pay-Per-View at 10 p.m./7 p.m. ET/PT. Tyron Woodley faces Stephen Thompson with his welterweight championship on the line in a rematch from their 2016 Fight of the Year contender at UFC 205.
The information initially arose from his father Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, who is in his homeland after being denied a visa to come watch his son fight, informed Russian media Khabib had been hospitalized.
Ariel Helwani confirmed that news during his Facebook live broadcast of the early UFC 209 weigh-ins, stating Khabib’s team told him he hadn’t gone to the hospital because of weight cutting, and the UFC confirmed he had in the above statement. He was apparently cleared to leave the hospital but not to fight and the bout was called off.
The UFC may or may not rush to find a replacement on short notice – something that isn’t likely to fall into place perfectly. Whatever fight they may sign, however, it won’t replace the massively awaited bout that fans have been cheated out of too many times.

If it felt like it was too good to be true it was finally happening, that may unfortunately be the case – again.
Rumors surfaced this morning form Bloody Elbow’s Karim Zidan (via BJPenn.com) that Russian media reported No. 1-ranked lightweight Khabib Nurmagomedov had been taken to the hospital prior to the early weigh-ins for his highly anticipated interim lightweight title fight versus Tony Ferguson:
Russian media reporting Khabib was taken to hospital three hours before the weigh-ins. Izvestia reported news after speaking to his father
Finally, MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani acknowledged the report during the official early weigh-ins, also noting the reports could not be confirmed as of yet.
The anticipated bout has been booked several times before only to fall apart due to an injury of some sort to one of the two, and if these reports indeed prove true, it would seem the latest withdrawal would signify the pivotal fight is just not supposed to happen. This time it was for a title, even if it was an interim one, however.
Stay tuned for updates about the messy situation in the hours to follow.
