Rashad Evans’ latest comeback attempt is set for March 4’s UFC 209 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

News came last night from ESPN that Evans will return to face former Olympic judoka Dan Kelly at the rapidly developing card. Evans’ third attempt at a middleweight debut will take place pending clearance from the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC).

Former light heavyweight champion Evans was set to take on Tim Kennedy in his original middleweight debut at last November’s UFC 205, but some reported irregularities with his pre-fight MRI led the New York State Athletic Commission (NYSAC) to deny him a license to fight. The bout was rescheduled for December 10’s UFC 206 from Toronto, Ontario, but once again the presiding athletic commission decided to deny him a chance to fight after following the precedent set by New York.

He’s insisted that everything was fine with his medical records and that there was a mistake made that lead to him being denied. Evans affirmed he had visited multiple specialists for the issue and had passed all tests with “flying colors.” For their part, an NSAC official told ESPN that Evans would go through all “normal medical procedures” in order to be licensed for the fight.

Long one of the UFC’s most recognizable stars, Evans finally decided to make the cut down to 185 pounds after two consecutive losses, a brutal knockout to Glover Teixeira and a one-sided decision to Ryan Bader, following nearly two years off to recover from a serious knee injury prior to his scheduled UFC 170 showdown with current champion Daniel Cormier in early 2014.

‘Suga’ will return to face a largely unknown competitor who has quietly racked up a three-fight win streak in Kelly, who was most recently seen outlasting veteran Chris Camozzi by decision at November’s UFC Fight Night 101. The 39-year-old Australian has won five out of his six total UFC bouts, with the one loss a technical knockout at the hands of Sam Alvey. Boasting a 12-1 overall record, Kelly was called out by name by rising middleweight Eric Spicely following his submission win at last weekend’s UFC on FOX 23, but received a much more high-profile opponent instead.

The fight joins a card featuring the awaited welterweight title rematch between Tyron Woodley and Stephen Thompson in the main event, while Khabib Nurmagomedov and Tony Ferguson are set to finally go to war for the interim lightweight title in the co-main event.

UFC lightweight champion Conor McGregor and No. 1-ranked Khabib Nurmagomedov have a beef that needs to be squashed.

The pair engaged in a verbal battle backstage at the UFC 205 ceremonial weigh-ins this past November, with security needed to keep the two 155-pounders away from each other. With McGregor taking some time off to enjoy the birth of his first child, however, this leaves Nurmagomedov to compete for the interim lightweight title against Tony Ferguson in the co-main event of March 4’s UFC 209 from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Nurmagomedov caught up with TMZ (via FOX Sports) recently to promote the bout, and vowed to ‘smash’ McGregor once he’s done with Ferguson:

“Conor has to be careful because I’m going to smash Tony Ferguson and after I’m going to smash Conor McGregor,” Nurmagomedov said. “I think after this one, people will begin to forget about this guy. But now, everybody talks about him, but it’s okay. For me, it’s okay.”

Regardless of if he ever gets the chance to step into the Octagon with ‘The Notorious,’ Nurmagomedov’s key focus at the moment is to one day reign as the UFC’s lightweight king. With a current undefeated record of 24-0, the Russian went on to compare his success in mixed martial arts (MMA) to that of Floyd Mayweather Jr. in boxing:

“I don’t care about him, I only want to fight for the title. This is what I want. I don’t care about Conor or Floyd Mayweather. Floyd Mayweather is one of the greatest boxers, but I think I am the Floyd Mayweather of MMA. I am 24-0, I can be 26-0 — 10-0 in the UFC — undefeated and undisputed UFC lightweight champion. I want to become the greatest lightweight ever. This is what I want.”

With the UFC being adamant in their attempts to get a show in Nurmagomedov’s home country of Russia soon, perhaps the chips could all fall into place pitting a massive lightweight title showdown between McGregor and ‘The Eagle’.

How do you think McGregor would fare inside the Octagon against the undefeated grappling phenom if they ever throw down?

The opening betting lines are in for a pair of UFC title fights scheduled to go down in March.

The folks at Best Fight Odds have released their betting odds for the UFC Welterweight Championship rematch between Tyron Woodley and Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson and the highly-anticipated interim UFC Lightweight Title bout pitting undefeated Khabib Nurmagomedov against Tony Ferguson.

Scheduled as the main event and co-main event for the UFC 209 pay-per-view on March 4th, the two title fights — according to the oddsmakers — are very even matchups.

Best Fight Odds have the challenger, Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson, a slight favorite over reigning champion and the man who narrowly defeated him in his last fight, Tyron Woodley.

The website has “Wonderboy” opening at -115, while Woodley opened as a slight underdog at +105. What this means is a $115 bet on Thompson would earn you $100 profit if he wins. On the flip-side, a $100 bet on Woodley would bank you $105 if he were to win.

For the interim UFC Lightweight Title bout, the odds are a lot closer than many might have expected. Best Fight Odds have Khabib Nurmagomedov opened at -172, while Ferguson, the betting underdog, opened at +158.

UFC 209: Woodley vs. Thompson 2 goes down live on Saturday, March 4th from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, airing live on pay-per-view. Join us here at MMANews.com on 3/4 for live round-by-round results coverage of the event.
