Former UFC and WEC lightweight champion, Anthony Pettis has played down claims from those who place Khabib Nurmagomedov atop the lightweight GOAT list, claiming that the Dagestani did not face the most formidable competition during his Octagon tenure.
Anthony Pettis, a former undisputed UFC and WEC lightweight titleholder, is set to headline PFL (Professional Fighters League) 7 in August in New York City – rematching fellow UFC veteran, Stevie Ray after a body triangle submission loss to the Scottish veteran back in June of this year.
25-13 as a professional, Milwaukee veteran, Pettis ended his lenghty and gold laden tenure with the UFC back in December 2020 following the completion of his contractual obligations with a win over Alex Morono – penning a deal with the PFL.
Touted as a lightweight division pioneer in the modern era of the sport, Pettis, who scooped WEC gold back in 2010, has so far, struggled under the PFL banner, slipping to 1-3 from four fights back in June with his loss to Ray.
In his most recent win, Pettis defeated Kilkenny native, Myles Price with a first round triangle win earlier this year, snapping prior defeats to both Clay Collard, and Raush Manfio.
Sharing his thoughts on the discussion of the greatest lightweight of all time, Pettis played down suggestions that the aforenoted, Khabib should lay claim to that moniker.
“You know, I think – I moved down to ‘45, I fought at ‘70 – I fought all over the place,” Anthony Pettis told LowKick MMA reporter, Michael Owens. “It’s hard to say Khabib (Nurmagomedov) because he didn’t fight everybody. He would the world title fighting Al Iaquinta.”
“Al Iaquinta wasn’t even ranked at the time, so, you know,” Anthony Pettis continued. “And then he fought some good guys after that and then he retired, so it’s hard to say he’s the GOAT. He’s definitely one of the best. But like, guys like B.J. Penn, you know – like that’s a guy for me that, you know, if he wouldn’t have came back and lost a couple fight, we all would be talking about B.J. as the GOAT, you know, one of the first. …”
Anthony Pettis was linked to a Khabib Nurmagomedov fight back in 2018
Briefly linked with a matchup against Khabib back in 2018, Pettis was considered by the promotion to replace then-featherweight champion, Max Holloway for a Brooklyn matchup with the Russian, however, the parties failed to come to terms on a short notice deal – with Khabib instead fighting Iaquinta.

After months of speculation, Charles Oliveira has a new opponent.
The former 155lb champion is scheduled to face Islam Makhachev at UFC 280 on Oct. 22. Oliveria has a proposition for his Russian opponent, who is known for his elite grappling and sambo background. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt is open to starting the lightweight title fight by showcasing his skills on the mat.
“Want to start the fight on the ground? I’ll start playing guard. It won’t make any difference to me. Again, I’m telling everyone this, I’m the division’s biggest problem and you’re not understanding,” Oliveira told MMA Fighting. “I don’t care who it is and when it is. If you want to trade on the feet, come for it, I have firepower in my hands. If you want to take me down, do it.”
The lightweight title fight was made official for Abu Dhabi last week. Two months ago, Oliveira was stripped of his title in controversial fashion. He missed weight by half a pound, but insisted that the scale was incorrect. Oliveira went on to finish Justin Gathje by submission at UFC 274.
The Brazilian native is on an 11-fight winning streak with victories over Dustin Poirier, Michael Chandler, and Tony Ferguson. Oliveira believes he is the uncrowned king of the 155-pound division.
“You want peace? We want twice of it. You want war? War is coming, it’s on October 22. … I’m ready. I’ll win this guy. Listen to me, I’ll leave a gigantic legacy. I get near the big names of the sport and they feel bothered. Why is that? I haven’t done anything,” Oliveira said. “The reality is they see how much I’m evolving. That’s the reality. The way I talk has changed, the way I get dressed has changed, the way I arrive has changed. Everything has changed.” (H/T MMA Fighting).
Charles Oliveira’s Next Challenge
A longtime teammate of Khabib Nurmagomedov, Islam Makhachev has been climbing the ranks of the lightweight division. He is on an 11-fight winning streak with wins over Bobby Green, Dan Hooker, Thiago Moisés, and Drew Dober. Makhachev last fought in February and earned a first-round TKO win against Green.
For months, the Russian native has advocated for a title shot with the goal of being UFC champion. He finally gets his wish against one of the best grapplers in the UFC.
“October 22, I’m bringing UFC Lightweight Belt back to Dagestan Inshallah,” Makhachev said on Twitter.
Since the fight announcement, Makhachev has opened as a -255 favorite over Oliveira. The uncrowned champion has no problem being the underdog.
“The octagon is the same wherever, in a street in the favela or in Dubai or anywhere else,” Oliveira said. “It’s just the two of us when the cage door closes. I have all the respect in the world for Islam and his story and what he’s done, but we have to weigh things, the names I’ve fought and the names he’s fought. It’s different already. I’m way better than him, and now we’ll see who’s the best.” (H/T MMA Fighting)

Ali Abdelaziz believes that No.6 ranked lightweight, Beneil Dariush, is deserving of a ‘big fight’ but is unsure what the future holds for ’Benny.’
Beneil Dariush has not competed since UFC 262 in May of last year, where he captured the biggest win of his career to date. Dariush dominated Tony Ferguson for three rounds to claim a decision win. This would propel him to the upper echelon of the lightweight division and would put him in contention for bouts with top five opposition, such as Dustin Poirier or Justin Gaethje.
Eventually, it would be decided that Dariush would face Islam Makhachev in a number one contender fight. However, to the disappointment of many, Dariush would be forced out of competing after sustaining an ankle injury. Instead, the unranked Bobby ‘King’ Green stepped in on late notice to face Makhachev, losing in the first round.
After Dariush was forced out, it was unclear what the future would hold for either man, but a rebooking seemed the most logical next step.
Instead, after months of campaigning from Mahkachev and his team, it was recently announced that Mahkachev would face Charles Oliveria for the vacant title.
Over a year out, having missed out on a huge fight, and with seemingly no booking on the horizon, Dariush is in a tough spot. Ali Abdelaziz, famed MMA manager to the likes of Khabib Nurmagomedov and Makhachev feels that Daruish deserves a big fight, but is unsure what the UFC will do with him, especially since other fighters seem unwilling to risk their spot in the rankings
“Beneil deserves a big fight,” Abdelaziz said to The Schmo.
“Everybody is out. Beneil, he deserves a fight. I believe he could fight Islam for the lightweight title.”
“UFC and Sean is doing his job, but he can’t force guys to fight. Everybody is holding their rankings. I don’t like the rankings. Beneil is on an eight-fight winning streak, when is he going to get a title shot? When he’s 40? All these guys who have been losing, they shouldn’t be turning down fights. We’re gonna figure it out, we always do.”
