Two of the most dominant competitors in UFC history, Khabib Nurmagomedov and Valentina Shevchenko, found a similar pattern from their victims.

Khabib Nurmagomedov and Valentina Shevchenko definitely do not agree on everything, but they do see one thing the same way. They do not buy into the notion that their opponents were defeated when they entered the Octagon. After the fights began, however, is quite a different story.

In a 2019 ESPN interview, Khabib was asked about his opponents’ level of belief when they step into the Eagle’s cage. Here is what the undefeated Dagestani had to say in response:

“I think they believe, too. Because these guys, one of the best in the world. They have to believe. Why you come to fight if you don’t believe yourself? I think they believe, too. But after first round, I think they not believe when I catch these guys.”

Khabib barely lost a round during his perfect 29-0 career. When you go back and watch the manner in which he dominated most fights from bell to bell, it’s difficult to argue with Khabib’s assessment of his victims’ psyche.

Valentina Shevchenko has been equally as dominant during her UFC flyweight championship run as Khabib was in his career. She, too, has barely lost a round during this reign of terror. Like Khabib, she doesn’t attribute her dominance to pre-defeated opponents but rather deflated ones after they’ve become aware of what they’re up against.

“They’re not coming already broken for the fight,” Shevchenko said at the UFC 266 post-fight press conference. “When (the fight starts), the break is when their strategy for the fight doesn’t work. If they have like, ‘OK, I was thinking that I can do that,’ and they’re starting to realize it’s not happening—and I play my game.

They wanted to play their game, but it’s not happening. I just play my game. And this is when the break starts, the breakage. So it’s not before the fight; it’s during the fight, in the first seconds of the fight.”

Valentina Shevchenko’s last “broken” opponent was Lauren Murphy at UFC 266. This TKO victory for “The Bullet” made for her sixth successful title defense. Perhaps the most notable difference between these two dominators is the fact that Khabib’s spirit-breaking days are over while Shevchenko’s says hers are only just beginning.

Khabib Nurmagomedov remained cool and composed as a fan charged onto the stage during a recent speaking engagement.

Since retiring from competition last year, Khabib has kept himself busy with multiple projects. From considering going full Michael Jordan and crossing over to another sport in his athletic prime to starting his own MMA promotion, Khabib’s retired life has not been plagued with idleness.

Khabib has also committed to making multiple public appearances since his retirement, which included a recent speaking engagement in Harrogate, England. At the close of the event, a fan leaped onto the stage as Khabib was making his closing remarks. You can find a video of the incident below, which included the former lightweight champion remaining stoic and composed in the face of a potential attack (h/t Alex Behunin).

“No, no, no, brother. No, please, brother. No, brother,” Khabib said calmly to the fan. “Brother, don’t do this. Don’t do this.”

It’s unclear what exactly the fan’s intentions were, but after he was restrained and escorted away, Khabib addressed the audience (h/t Sportskeeda).

“Guys, I come from other part of world here to see you guys and you know, I think I deserve some respect too. Thank you. Around the world I have big, big support from my people who have same views like I have and I really believe here we have same views and please, take care of your kids. This is our future. This is most important. Thank you guys.”

There was recently some fake news circulating about Khabib nearly being attacked by someone backstage at an MMA event. Khabib denied the story, stating that it was actually a fan who was hoping to take a picture with him.

This latest incident may have been a similar situation, with the man perhaps looking to embrace Khabib before security intervened. Nevertheless, with his presence unwelcome and his movements abrupt, it was wise for security to take no chances and apprehend the intruder. Otherwise, Khabib would have no choice but to begrudgingly advance to 30-0 after all at the expense of a heedless civilian.

Fedor has voiced his opinion regarding Khabib’s recent comments directed at MMA ring girls.

The recently retired Khabib Nurmagomedov has come under fire following the controversial comments he made targeting “unnecessary” ring girls in the sport of mixed martial arts. Here is some of what Khabib had to say:

“Look, I don’t want to offend anyone, ring girls are the most useless people in martial arts. What is their purpose? I have a question. You can show that it is the second round on the screen. I realize that is a history. History knows many mistakes. We read history to avoid mistakes of the past in the future. If we look in the history, it says they are useless. That is my personal opinion…”

Former and current fighters, pundits, and even ring girls themselves have all replied to Khabib’s opinions on this subject, and now, “The Last Emperor” Fedor Emelianenko has given his thoughts on the subject.

While speaking with Fighting Flashback, Fedor was asked to share his views on Khabib’s statements and whether he agreed with his fellow Russian or not.

“The girls are showing the number of the rounds… [Round shaped] plates. The only [thing] is to dress them more decent.” Emelianenko said.

When pressed to comment further on the issue, Fedor insisted that his focus remains solely on his team and family, and whatever Khabib said is none of his concern.

“You know I don’t have [anything to do with it],” Fedor stated. “I have enough problems and affairs of my team and my family to not fill my head with stupid things.”

You can check out the video for Fedor’s thoughts on the matter below.

Fedor Emelianenko will face off with Timothy Johnson when the two heavyweights lock horns at Bellator 269 on October 23, in a fight that is believed to be the 44-year-old’s last.
