Khamzat Chimaev has talked about the fact many are comparing him to UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov after just two fights inside MMA’s premier promotion.

Chimaev defeated John Phillips at middleweight in his UFC debut before taking on Rhys McKee at welterweight just 10 days’ later – making company history in the process.

In the UFC Fight Island 3 post-fight press conference Chimaev spoke confidently about how easy he finds fighting despite stepping up his level of competition, he said.

“Of course it easy for me. I born from this country when I was kid, it was war in my country. Everyone know Chechnya, like before how they was. I like to fight in the cage, and smash someone, it’s too easy. Too easy. Smash someone. Get money, brother. It’s perfect for me.

Chimaev commented on people comparing him to Nurmagomedov by saying he will soon replace the undefeated champion as the pound-for-pound number one.

“I like this guy, this guy is, I think I don’t know, pound for pound number one?” Chimaev said. “Yeah, I think he’s pound for pound number one. He’s 28 wins? Yeah. But soon … I’m going to be pound for pound number one. I’m gonna be champion. I have eight fights, eight finishes. I destroyed everybody. I’m going to do this. Next fight also.”

The 26-year-old is in no rush to claim UFC gold but feels like it is in an evitable part of his future which he predicts will happen sooner rather than later,  he said.

“For me it doesn’t matter. I don’t know, but I want to take this belt in one, two years? As soon as possible I’m going to take this. I know it’s not like movie, like Rocky Balboa. Like he want to fight and get the title shot. I’m going to take this soon.”

Once he does become champion Chimaev hopes to use his position and the money obtained through it for good.

“To help somebody,” he said. “I do this not only for me. I do this for everybody I can help. I don’t want to be like Mayweather, like McGregor, be one of the guys to show my money, show my cars like something like that. I want to help the people.” (Transcribed by MMA Mania)

Khamzat Chimaev not only wants to stay active — he is now targeting the bigger names.

Chimaev is enjoying a meteoric rise with the UFC following two dominant wins in the space of 10 days with wins over John Phillips and most recently, Rhys McKee last night at UFC Fight Island 3.

The 26-year-old is not stopping there, as it was later revealed that he wanted to compete again at UFC 252 which takes place August 15 with Dana White even ready to make it happen.

Chimaev Targeting Bigger Names

If that is the case, the question would then turn to whom he should face next.

Given that he only made his UFC debut earlier this month, it would make sense to gradually build him up in the welterweight division.

But given how dominant he has been so far as well, many wouldn’t complain if he faced a more established name. Chimaev is going a step further as he called out former title challenger Demian Maia to see who had the superior grappling.

“@demianmaia you a legend I respect you but sorry you’re next… let’s see who have better grappling…”

While a fight with Maia would be for competitive reasons, a fight with someone like Michael Chiesa would be to fast-track himself into the top 10 of the rankings as Chimaev sent a tweet out to him as well.

It is unlikely that Chiesa — currently ranked No. 8 — would accept at the moment, though he did respond to a fan claiming he would never accept the fight.

Khamzat Chimaev is not done just yet.

Chimaev fought for the second time in 10 days when he completely dominated Rhys McKee en route to a first-round TKO win in their welterweight bout on the main card of UFC Fight Island 3 on Saturday night.

Much like his dominant debut against John Phillips at UFC Fight Island 1, the damage was lopsided in favor of Chimaev who didn’t absorb a single strike against McKee.

And now, he wants to fight again at UFC 252 — with UFC president Dana White being receptive to the idea.

“Just spoke to @danawhite and he said @KChimaev “is special” and wants to fight again on Aug. 15 at #UFC252. He said he’ll make that happen.”

That means if confirmed, Chimaev will have fought three times in the span of a month.

If he makes it three wins out of three, it would certainly be one of the most memorable debut months in UFC history — if it isn’t already.

UFC 252 takes place August 15 in Las Vegas and will be headlined by a heavyweight title fight between current champion Stipe Miocic and Daniel Cormier.

Khamzat Chimaev will fight for a second time in 10 days on July 25 after being matched against UFC newcomer Rhys McKee who has accepted the fight on 7 days’ notice.

Brett Okamoto first broke the news that Chimaev had his second ‘Fight Island’ fight lined up and his opponent would most likely be McKee, he wrote on social media.

“UFC serious about booking ‘The Wolf’ Khamzat Chimaev a second fight on Fight Island, after his impressive debut on Wednesday. Current front runner for opponent is Ireland’s Rhys McKee. This would be at welterweight. 185 debut on 7/15, 170 sophomore appearance on 7/25.”

The Sweedish fighter made an impressive UFC debut on July 15 when he faced John Phillips up at middleweight. Chimaev dominated the fight from the opening bell using his elite-level wrestling to take the fight to the floor where he unleashed nasty ground and pound in round one.

The opening five minutes were so dominant it earned him two 10-8 scores and one 10-7 from the judges. In the second round, he once again took the fight to the mat and it was there, he locked up D’Arce choke and found the finish.

Chimaev spoke post-fight about wanting to fight the big-name welterweight fighters as soon as possible. He even mentioned Nate Diaz and former champion Robbie Lawler but he took special time out to chastise Mike Perry who has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons as of late.

Popular Irish fighter McKee is currently riding a three-fight win streak. Last time out he stopped Hakon Foss inside one round. He holds a high-profile win over former Cage Warriors lightweight champion Jai Herbert who is also due to make his UFC debut on July 25.

The welterweight fighter will make his debut on the undercard of  Darren Till vs. Robert Whittaker. McKee will need to pass several COVID-19 tests, undergo quarantine and fly to Abu Dhabi before he can fight next weekend.
