‘Trailblazer’ Kevin Holland does not want to hear about a title shot for Khamzat Chimaev. The US-born Holland recently came out of his short-lived retirement to fight in the main event of UFC Fight Night this weekend against ‘Wonderboy’ Stephen Thompson.

In his last bout, at UFC 279, Holland was defeated in a catchweight match against MMA superstar Khamzat Chimaev. Ahead of this weekend’s main event showdown, the American ‘Trailblazer’ explained his point of view. He explained:

“If I wake up Sunday morning after beating ‘Wonderboy’ and you guys have [Khamzat Chimaev] fighting for a 185-pound world title, and he’s never won a fight at ’85 in the top 15, I’m retired. I understand business is business, but favoritism is favoritism. The kid missed weight. I had to step up and fight him after he missed weight to make the fight happen. I shouldn’t have had to do that.”

Kevin Holland is happy to retire once again. He continued:

“I did what I had to do. I did what I was supposed to do as a company man, so I’m sitting here telling you guys now: Certain things have to go certain ways. If they don’t go certain ways and we don’t get what we were promised, the things we talked about aren’t honored, you might as well give me my resignation papers and go home and smoke weed and play video games for the rest of my life.” [Transcript Courtesy of MMA Junkie]

Khamzat Chimaev, Kevin Holland and UFC gold

Kevin Holland was on a two-fight win streak at welterweight when he was stopped by ‘Borz’ earlier this year in a catchweight bout. Chimaev is undefeated in MMA and has jumped between the welterweight and middleweight divisions. The Swedish-Russian fighter has recently been in a verbal spat with the UFC middleweight champion Alex Pereira.

Kevin Holland explained that it simply would not make sense if Khamzat Chimaev got a title shot. Chimaev’s last win against a middleweight fighter was in 2020. Since then, he has won three bouts, two at welterweight and one at catchweight against Holland.

‘Trailblazer’ added:

“There’s just certain things that just don’t make sense. At the end of the day, if we’re here and we’re here to be fair and we’re here to be even, everyone should have a fair chance. We’re fighters. We fight for what we want. We should be able to fight off what we want. We should be able to get the same things if we’re fighting the same way. That’s just how I feel. But I’m not here to btch, I’m not here to complain. I’m just here to do what I feel is right and if I feel like something isn’t right, I will move the fck around, because that’s what I do.”

Alex Pereira

Recently minted undisputed UFC middleweight champion, Alex Pereira has once again weighed up a potential fight against undefeated welterweight contender, Khamzat Chimaev – touting his own wrestling defense in the form of an indigenous wrestling match.

Pereira, who recently claimed how he approached the UFC about potentially booking him against unbeaten wrestling ace, Chimaev atop January’s UFC 283 card in his native Brazil – offering to make the walk at the light heavyweight limit of 205lbs as to avoid a substantial weight cut for both on such short notice.

According to the Sao Paulo native, however, Chimaev rejected the offer to fight him in Rio de Janeiro – a claim the latter has since denied.

For Chimaev, the AllStars MMA staple has been continuously linked with a title-eliminator at welterweight against former interim titleholder, Colby Covington, however, has yet to book his next UFC outing.

Last time out, Chimaev improved to 12-0 as a professional, defeating upcoming UFC Fight Night Orlando main event star, Kevin Holland with a dominant first round D’Arce choke win.

Touting his own takedown defense as rumblings of a fight against Chimaev continue to take a foothold, Alex Pereira shared footage of himself taking part in an indigenous wrestling match – with the caption, “(Khamzat) Chimaev trying to take me down.”

In response to Pereira, Chimaev mocked the Brazilian striker’s defense, questioning “ this is your level?” among a slew of laughing face emojis.

Alex Pereira is expected to rematch Israel Adesanya next

Winning the undisputed middleweight title earlier this month with a stunning fifth round standing TKO win over former titleholder, Israel Adesanya. In the time since his spectacular Madison Square Garden victory, Alex Pereira has welcomed an immediate title re-run with the Nigerian-Kiwi next.

Pereira’s fifth round knockout win to land the middleweight title followed prior victories over Sean Strickland, Bruno Silva, and Andreas Michailidis during his short tenure under the Dana White-led UFC banner.

UFC welterweight Stephen Thompson has predicted Colby Covington will defeat rising star Khamzat Chimaev.

The UFC are expected to book a 170lb clash between former interim champion, Covington, and No.3 ranked Chimaev.

Chimaev’s six-fight run in the UFC has been sensational, only ever facing adversity when taking on Gilbert Burns, who at the time was ranked No.2, in a bout he would ultimately win. The Chechen’s strong wrestling, submission game and punching power has garnered him a fearsome reputation, but one half of this week’s main event, Stephen Thompson, backs Covington to get the victory.

Talking to Submission Radio, Thompson feels that Chimaev’s weight issues could play a role in how the fight plays out.

I’m not really sure if that will happen,” Thompson began “I don’t think Colby wants it, obviously, and especially against a guy that hasn’t made weight. So, I don’t blame him.

If it does happen, I think if it goes five-five, I think Colby’s got it if it goes in the later rounds. Just because he’s got cardio for days. And we saw the fight with Chimaev and Gilbert Burns, and Chimaev started to fatigue. And I don’t know if that’s because he did make weight, right? And he was depleted? Cause he killed himself to get down to 170. Will he be able to do it again? I don’t know.

If he doesn’t make weight, I wouldn’t fight him,” Thompson continued. “I would say no. But if it does [happen], if Chimaev wins, it’s gonna have to be early on in the rounds. But if it goes all five, definitely Colby. He’s got cardio for days, and Chimaev is just a big 170-er man. He shouldn’t even be a 170, he should be up at 185.” (H/T MMA Mania)

Thompson will take on Kevin Holland in the main event of UFC Fight Night Orlando this Saturday night. ‘Wonderboy’ will hope to get back into the win column in what will be a far more stylistically favorable matchup, after facing two strong wrestlers his last two times out.
