Ahead of his UFC 279 co-headliner earlier this month, footage has emerged of undefeated welterweight contender, Khamzat Chimaev hyping himself up for his Octagon walk against Kevin Holland, taking inspiration from former heavyweight boxing world champions, the late, Muhammad Ali, and Mike Tyson.

Chimaev, who improved to 12-0 as a professional earlier this month at UFC 279, defeated welterweight striker, Kevin Holland with a first round D’Arce choke submission in the opening minute of their short-notice pairing.

The AllStars MMA staple was initially scheduled to share the Octagon with the exiting, Nate Diaz atop the card in Las Vegas, Nevada, however, Chimaev tipped the welterweight non-title limit by seven and a half pounds.

Turning in another dominant Octagon performance, Chimaev, who had scored a close, unanimous decision win over former title challenger, Gilbert Burns earlier this year, managed to score an early takedown on Holland, controlled the Californian before wrapping up a D’Arce choke submission win.

Criticized for his weight mishap throughout the days following UFC 279, footage has now emerged detailing Chimaev hyping himself up for his Octagon walk backstage at the T-Mobile Arena in ‘Sin City’ – taking inspiration from the aforenoted, Ali, and Tyson.

“If anyone is going to be champion, it will be me,” Khamzat Chimaev can be heard saying as he paces throughout his locker room. “Muhammad Ali became Muhammad Ali. Mike Tyson became Mike Tyson. And I will be Khamzat Chimaev.”

Linked with a potential middleweight move off the back of his weight miss and win against Holland, Chimaev has been the subject of a call-out from one-time title challenger, Paulo Costa, who offered to face the Chechen at UFC 283 in January in his native Brazil.

Footage previously emerged during UFC 279 fight week detailing a verbal altercation between both Chimaev and Costa at the UFC Performance Institute in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Paulo Costa ripped into Khamzat Chimaev and called him out on his latest appearance on ‘The MMA Hour’ with Ariel Helwani.

Costa and Chimaev have had an ongoing since the lead up to UFC 279. The two got into an altercation the week before Chimaev’s bout at UFC 279. Chimaev and Costa’s bad blood ended up soaking through to the night of the press conferences, which led to the conferences being cancelled. Chimaev ended up missing weight the day after, which Costa believes the things he said and did had the most to do with it.

Chimaev and Costa both won their last fights respectively, but with Chimaev missing the weight limit at welterweight, he will most likely fight next at middleweight. Dana White went out on a limb by assuming he would fight at 185 in his next bout, due to his weight issue at welterweight.

The middleweight division is where Paulo Costa fights at, and he wants a piece of ‘Borz’.

“I think [next] will be Chimaev,” Costa answered Helwani when he was asked who his next opponent will be. “Yeah, I think because he is all hype. I stole some of his hype. I stole his sleep, I stole his cap, I stole his main event fight. I stole everything. You need to do something motherf*cker. I stole everything that you had.”

Helwani asked if he believed he was the reason behind all the issues Chimaev had in the lead, and Costa truly believes that he was. Chimaev still made quick work of his opponent Kevin Holland, but it wasn’t the main event bout that would’ve been against Nate Diaz. A win over Diaz would’ve taken Chimaev to an all new high.

Costa said that he would fight Chimaev at 185 pounds, in the middleweight division.

“I cannot do 170. You think I can make 170? 185 is the most deep that I can do.”

Georges St-Pierre fires shots at Khamzat Chimaev for not making weight

In an interview with The Schmo, former UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre criticized Chimaev for coming in overweight.

“He needs to make weight,” St-Pierre said via MMA Fighting. “When you miss weight it’s a big disrespect not only to your opponent but to the sport. But we don’t know what happened. Maybe there’s a reason, maybe there’s a medical reason or something, so when you don’t know, you don’t know. But for sure, in the future, if he misses weight another time, maybe that will prevent him from having a title shot.

“Maybe give him the chance to go back at 170 if he wants to, but he can’t miss weight. Missing weight, it’s hard to forgive. As a fan, I would like to see Kamaru Usman get revenge [for the next title fight] because if anyone deserves it, it’s him. Maybe perhaps Chimaev has a shot against the winner of this fight [with Leon Edwards].”

St-Pierre heaped praises on Nate Diaz for going out on the top

UFC 279 marked the final outing on Diaz’s contract, and the Stockton native is now free to explore options as a free agent. GSP praised Diaz for going out on a high note, with a win over Tony Ferguson.

“I’m very happy for him,” St-Pierre said of Diaz. “He came out on top, beautiful. Whatever he does next, it’s up to him. But he’s got the power to choose what he wants to do and he’s gonna be paid accordingly. You need to be smart in this business and what I’m saying to the young fighters, it’s that you should retire from the sport, not let the sport retire you.”

Paulo Costa believes Khamzat Chimaev crumbled under the pressure ahead of UFC 279: ‘He lost his mind a little bit.’

Fan favourite Paulo Costa has claimed that Khamzat Chimaev simply could not handle the pressure he was facing ahead of headlining UFC 279.

In what was Khamzat Chimaev’s first main event slot inside the promotion the stage was set for the Swedish fighter to send Nate Diaz off into free agency and absorb the attention and popularity that a win against such a well-respected veteran in Diaz would bring.

However, things took a dramatic turn for the worse following Chimaev’s extreme weight miss which resulted in the undefeated fighter being dropped from the main event slot and instead tasked with taking on recently rejuvenated welterweight Kevin Holland.

Chimaev would ultimately emerge successful in his matchup when he was able to submit Holland inside the first round and continue his undefeated run inside the promotion. However, amid all the commotion that surrounded UFC 279, it seems Chimaev has lost a large following on his fanbase following his antics.

One man who believes he may know the reasoning behind Chimaev’s weight miss is Brazilian middleweight, Paulo Costa. Speaking to Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour, Costa has claimed that the Khamzat had been absorbed by the pressure and that the moment had simply become too much for him in his first headlining slot.

“It was crazy – I think he was so disturbed in his mind.”

“I think he lost his mind, with all these crazy things that happened with him in the week. I think there was a lot of pressure above him and behind him, because he’s a little bit new at this, and to do a big fight against the legend Nate Diaz was not easy for him. So I think he lost his mind a little bit. It’s a lot of distractions for him.”

Paulo Costa calls for the Khamzat Chimaev matchup

Despite being one of the most feared fighters to enter the promotion Paulo Costa has welcomed the opportunity to face Khamzat Chimaev after suggestions had been made that ‘Borz’ should make the jump up to compete in a more natural weight class for him, in the 185-pound division.

“I think he should move to 185, to middleweight division, because it’s hard to make 170 for him, on that stage,” Paulo Costa said. “You know, your body changes. It’s never the same. Maybe you change for bad, maybe you change for better, but I think he needs to put a lot of [effort] to make that weight and I think it’s a big problem for him right now. Maybe he cannot do this anymore.”

“I’d like [to fight him] but I don’t really think this will happen because he avoids fighting me,” Costa said. “He doesn’t want to fight me. He just wants to fight small guys, smaller than him, you know? And guys who have no wrestling, have no takedown defense, have no power to f*** him up.

“He knows who I am and even him, his coach, his managers, the guys don’t want that fight. The guys want to fight Kevin Holland, small guys, Gilbert [Burns]. And I appreciate those guys, Gilbert and Holland, but he chooses who he wants to fight.” (Transcribed by MMAFighting)

As he only has one fight remaining on his current contract and it is still unconfirmed whether the Brazilian will be looking to re-sign, Costa could propel his stock to the sky if he were to defeat the undefeated Chimaev before bowing out as a free agent.

Chael Sonnen came to the defense of Khamzat Chimaev for his reaction to missing weight.

This past Saturday, Chimaev faced longtime rival Kevin Holland at UFC 279. “Borz” was scheduled to headline the card against Nate Diaz but needed to get his opponents shuffled after he came in overweight at 178.5 pounds, a huge seven and a half pounds over the agreed welterweight limit.

Chael Sonnen defends Khamzat Chimaev’s antics after weight miss

Following the weight miss, Chimaev did not seem to care as he gave the middle fingers to the cameras. He faced heat from the community for his reaction and quickly turned into an antagonistic figure.

MMA veteran Chael Sonnen argued against the hate Chimaev received as he gave his breakdown of the matter.

“I’m seeing people that were irritated with Chimaev,” Sonnen said (ht MMA News). “What is it that we’re upset about? That he missed weight? No, that’s not what it is,” Sonnen said. “What had you is that he missed weight and didn’t care. You saw no form of an apology… to the fans for changing the fight, to the promotion for losing a main event, to Nate Diaz… to Kevin Holland… There’s a lot of apologies you could throw around.

“The Bad Guy” theorized that there was not much of a choice to be made and that Chimaev took the road he found best.

“What is it that you wanted him to do? You think you wanted him to apologize… but would you respect him? … Do you want to be liked? Most people will answer yes, but if you ask me that question, liked or respected, I’ll take respected, for sure,” Sonnen added. “So what is it you wanted Chimaev to do? Grovel? Say sorry? Pull himself from the card completely? You want him to do something in the middle?”

Sonnen says it’s better than Chimaev risking losing respect

Sonnen believes it was better for Chimaev to be hated than to concede and lose some respect.

“(If) he says sorry, (he) weakens himself… Come on, show us who you are. If you’re not sorry, don’t say you’re sorry, and he wasn’t,” Sonnen stated. “I really don’t think that if you look at this objectively, and you had the position of being an advisor to Chimaev… (assessing) what is going to serve him and his brand and his future the best, I don’t think you would be wise to come to him and tell him to begin to grovel.

“You’ve got to play the hand that you’re dealt. Should Chimaev have made weight? Of course Chimaev should have made weight. But if he doesn’t, does he need to be a baby?” Sonnen concluded.
