Texas’s Commission Is Refusing To Release Kimbo Slice’s Medical Records

For several months now, various MMA journalists have been attempting to get the medical records of Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR), which oversees MMA in the Lone Star State.  There were a lot of questions when Ferguson died of congestive heart failure (an ongoing medical condition sometimes confused with cardiac arrest due to the terminology) less than four months after being deemed fit to fight in Texas, and this was was the only way to get to the bottom of it. The whole situation seemed especially egregious since Kimbo’s opponent, Dhafir “Dada 5000” Harris, nearly died that night from kidney failure and two heart attacks.

On Thursday, Bloody Elbow’s Tim Bissell revealed that the TDLR had turned down his request on privacy grounds. On the surface, that seems sound, but in reality, fighters sign waivers allowing the TDLR to release records used to determine licensing status. Other states have similar regulations, including Nevada, which arguably has an even more transparent version of the rule. In correspondence, the TDLR argued that their bylaws state that the information can be released to those with a “need to know,” which they define as medical professionals and judges. “The public has no specific need to know a contestant’s personal medical information.”

Bloody Elbow is currently looking into avenues of appeal.

According to a report by MMA Fighting, Kevin Ferguson, Jr. has been forced off Friday’s Bellator 160 prelims.

Ferguson, nicknamed “Baby Slice” in honor of his father, Kimbo Slice, was to face Johnny Tomasian in a welterweight contest. He made his amateur debut earlier this year, scoring a first round knockout.

Ferguson suffered an injury to his MCL but will not require surgery.

“My role in the Team Body Shop Bellator takeover hit a bit of a snag over the weekend while training, and I’m sad to say that my Bellator debut will have to wait a little longer,” Ferguson said. “I’ll still be at the event holding it down for my teammates AJ McKee and Joey Davis.”

Bellator 160 features a lightweight title-eliminator between Benson Henderson and Patricio “Pitbull” Freire and airs live on Spike TV from the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

June 6 2016 marked a dark day in combat sports history. The same week that Muhammad Ali had passed away we learned that the MMA community had lost one of their heroes too. Legendary Youtube sensation turned mixed martial artist Kimbo Slice had died suddenly of heart failure aged 42. It was a shock felt at the very core of the tight knit community and tributes poured in from all corners. Kimbo’s untimely death came during a turbulent time, with stars like Kevin Randleman, Jordan Parsons and Ryan Jimmo all passing within months of each other.

As the light of Kevin Ferguson’s existence was extinguished, the start of his son Kevin Jr.’s professional career has been ignited. Having fought a single amateur mixed martial arts contest on March 29, 2016, ‘Baby Slice’ will be making his pro debut with the last MMA promotion his father ever fought for. Bellator 160 will see Kevin Ferguson Jr.’s first step in to the world of pro fighting.

You may remember ‘Baby Slice’s’ nae from this brief clip giving him some exposure back in March of this year:

Talking on the sudden and very tragic passing of his famous father, as quoted by ESPN, Kevin Jr. says he’s still working on getting over his namesake’s deah:

“I won’t say I adjusted well or it didn’t bother me, but I was talking to him a few days before, so I understood what was going on,” Ferguson said.

“It was more of a shock to the world, put it like that. It was still a very big tragedy, but I got through it. I’m still getting through it. I won’t say I’m over it, but I’m working on it, I guess.”

With his father’s image now looming larger than ever, the spotlight is on ‘Baby Slice’ as he takes his turn to fight in the big leagues. Bellator 160 will go down on August 26 in Anaheim, California. Headlined by Benson Hendeson vs. Patricio Freire, the addition of Kevin Ferguson Jr. adds a little spice and nostalgia to the card.
