Kris Moutinho UFC release

After just two fights in the UFC Kris Moutinho has been released, and in his opinion, it’s a decision made too soon.

Bursting onto the scene out of nowhere in mid-2021, fans immediately were drawn to Moutinho because of his fascinating green hair, and the heart he displayed when he fought Sean O’Malley at UFC 264 on short notice.

That fight against O’Malley fully demonstrated the true grit and determination that Moutinho possessed, as he absorbed ridiculous damage round after round but never quit or even seemingly took a step back. Ultimately the referee called a stop to the fight in the third round. It seemed to truly be one of those instances where the referee saved a fighter from themselves, as the mysterious green-haired slugger showed no signs of backing down from the onslaught of ‘Suga’.

The loss to Sean O’Malley wouldn’t spell the doom of Moutinho’s career though, as the UFC gave him another chance against Guido Cannetti. A fighter that Moutinho felt was served to him as a sacrificial pawn, however, things would prove to go down quite differently. Cannetti would in fact make short work of Kris Moutinho, finishing him via KO/TKO just a few minutes into the fight. This would spell the doom for his short-lived UFC career, but according to the green-haired slugger, it was a decision made way too soon.

Kris Moutinho talks about his UFC release and points out an unfair double-standard

“I wish I would’ve gotten one more,” said Moutinho, in an interview with Talkin’ MMA (transcripts via MMA News). “It is what it is, though, you know what I mean? I can’t explain why they decided to do things…”

“It’s their business, their company,” Kris Moutinho continued. “I was given a fight, my last fight, against Guido (Cannetti)…nobody’s a bum in the UFC, I don’t care what anybody says…it’s the best organization in the world with the best depth in every weight class.”

The green-haired slugger went on to describe how he felt the UFC had matched him up with Cannetti to feed him a win. Losing, of course, sealed his fate.

“(Cannetti) was a guy who was on a losing streak, they gave him to me to win, and that’s why they cut me,” Kris Moutinho sighed. “I lost to a guy I should’ve beat…I don’t care if whether the stoppage was early or if I could’ve kept going, maybe I would have won the fight…I can’t go back in time and change things. I wish I had got another shot because I’ve seen guys lose multiple fights in a row and get three or four fights to go out there and do it, but man it was a lesson, a lesson learned.”

Since his UFC release, the 30-year-old Moutinho has competed in a Jiu Jitsu match, with claims that he may even take a boxing match next.

The UFC made its latest slew of reported cuts on Wednesday in the form of fighters such as Kris Moutinho and Mike Grundy.

News of the releases was reported by Twitter user UFC Roster Watch.

Moutinho most recently suffered a first-round standing TKO loss to Guido Cannetti in March. His UFC debut came on short notice against Sean O’Malley at UFC 264, losing via third-round TKO to the promising bantamweight prospect. Moutinho and O’Malley ended up earning Fight of the Night bonuses for their battle.

Before Moutinho signed with the UFC, he earned back-to-back wins during stints in CFFC and CES over Andrew Salas and Ashiek Ajim. A majority of his wins have come in CES, where he won seven of his first nine professional fights.

It’s unclear if Moutinho intends to return to CES or will sign with another promotion for his next MMA venture.

Like Moutinho, Grundy had his fair share of struggles recently with three-straight losses in the Octagon. He fell to Makwan Amirkhani via submission in just 57 seconds at UFC London in March.

Grundy made his UFC debut back in 2019 against Nad Narimani, earning a second-round knockout following stints in Shooto and ACB.

Moutinho and Grundy were far from the only cuts made by the UFC on Wednesday, as reported by UFC Roster Watch. Fares Ziam, Luigi Vendramini and Austin Hubbard were among the other names reportedly let go by the promotion.

Moutinho, Hubbard and Grundy have yet to publically address their reported releases.

Are you surprised by the UFC releasing Kris Moutinho, Austin Hubbard, and Mike Grundy?

A very exciting bantamweight matchup is in the works for March.

The UFC is beginning to book their spring events already and a top matchup between an exciting newbie and a battle-tested vet is in the works. A bantamweight matchup between Kris Moutinho and Guido Cannetti has been confirmed by MMA Junkie. The bout is being discussed for the March 12 UFC Fight Night card.

Moutinho made his UFC debut in July against Sean O’Malley. Although he lost that bout, he gained popularity due to his heart and fighting style along with his toughness. Moutinho is a product of Cage Fury Fighting Championship, a regional MMA organization out of the east coast that has produced many great UFC fighters over the years.

Moutinho was linked to a possible bout against Aaron Phillips for October but was forced out of that fight with an injury. Now he will take on the 41-year-old Cannetti in March.

Cannetti has been in the UFC since 2014. Cannetti fought twice for the promotion before being suspended for a failed USADA drug test. He returned in 2018 but has only won one fight since that time. He has lost his last three UFC bouts to Marlon Vera, Danaa Batgerel, and Mana Martinez. He will have his hands full with the young up-and-coming Moutinho.

The rest of the fight card for this March 12 event is yet to be determined. The only other bout slated for the event is a light heavyweight matchup between Thiago Santos and Magomed Ankalaev. The location of the event has not been announced as of yet but should be in Las Vegas at the UFC Apex.

How do you think will have their hand raised on March 12, Kris Moutinho or Guido Cannetti?

Sean O’Malley has shared what was going through his head during the three-round demolition of Kris Moutinho.

During the aftermath of UFC 264 on July 10, company debutant Kris Moutinho managed to gain a huge following despite being on the losing end of a dominant Sean O’Malley display.

Moutinho’s ability to take damage and keep coming forward for almost the entirety of the 15-minute fight did not go unnoticed, and while it was “Sugar” who came out on top with the one-sided victory, the 26-year-old’s inability to put his opponent away is widely considered to be disheartening by many, but O’Malley saw it differently.

In a recent interview on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Hour, Sean O’Malley opened up on what was going through his mind as Kris Moutinho refused to give up when the two faced off earlier this year.

“In the Octagon, I’m not having any internal conversations. I’m just in there performing. I didn’t care. I’m in there for 15 minutes. Each fight, I plan on going 15 minutes. So it wasn’t like, ‘Oh, my God, this kid won’t go away.’ It was like, ‘Holy shit, my highlight reel is gonna be so fuckin’ sweet; I can’t wait to watch that.’ It was just nonstop melting my fists off his face.” O’Malley explained.

Although he isn’t currently scheduled to fight, O’Malley has spoken about a potential December 11 return, with the American eyeing a meeting with either Frankie Edgar or Dominick Cruz before the year comes to a close.

Do you think Sean O’Malley’s confidence took a hit after his grueling matchup with Kris Moutinho?
