However, fans of Junior “Cigano” Dos Santos are worried the fighter might be biting off a bit more than he can chew. His very first opponent, Kubrat “Cobra” Pulev, holds a professional boxing record of 28 wins and 2 losses, was the European heavyweight champion twice between 2012 and 2016, and recently destroyed mixed martial artist Frank Mir by first-round TKO at the first Triller Triad event.

In a recent interview with ESPN, dos Santos expressed his gratitude for the fans’ concern but has a message for them:

“Well, for all of those, I (know there will be) some bad comments but also some comments coming from people that believe in me and support me. And like you said, they will be worried about me, you know? But I appreciate that. Thank you for the comments and for the worry. But you know what? This time, I took to myself and to my family to think about everything, decide what to do. Man, I’m 37 years old now, and I was feeling like—I was thinking about stopping. Maybe it’s not for me anymore. But that’s not my truth.”

Despite the defeats and controversial departure from the UFC, “Cigano” is happy and doing what he loves. Now that the spark of joy is once again within him, we could see an improved version of dos Santos when he steps in the ring.

Goodbye UFC, Hello Triller Triad

The end of February marks the beginning of Junior dos Santos’ boxing career with Triller at Triad Combat II.

dos Santos wants fans to understand that his exit from the UFC was crucial. The fighter blames the promotion’s “unprofessionalism” for hindering his success within the platform but does not allow the situation to negatively impact his goals.

“My truth is I love this thing, and I still can do it. I’m 37 years old, like I said. If you go to the gym and see me training, man, I’m getting better, with some great skills every time. So the moments I was going through right now in the UFC, that’s not me. This fight now will show all those people, all the people that support or those who doesn’t support, this fight will show everybody who I am for real,” he continued in the interview with ESPN.

Lest we forget dos Santos has wins against Derrick Lewis and Stipe Miocic, two renowned names in the heavyweight division, in his MMA career. Now, it will be former heavyweight champion vs former heavyweight champion when dos Santos’ boxing debut commences.

A heavyweight boxing match pitting former undisputed UFC heavyweight champion, Junior dos Santos, and recent feature, former IFB and WBA heavyweight champion, Kubrat Pulev is currently in the works to land on a Triller Triad Combat card in 2022, with MMA Junkie reporters, Danny Segura and Nolan King noting a potential February event – following an initial report from TMZ

Junior dos Santos set to make his combat return for the first time since last December

Expected to make his first outing since his release from the UFC back in March of this year, dos Santos, a former undisputed heavyweight champion under the promotion’s banner, had been linked to a potential move to Eagle FC, led by Khabib Nurmagomedov, especially after reports emerged detailing how dos Santos was now managed by Dominance MMA leader, Ali Abdelaziz.

In his last professional outing, the Santa Catarina native suffered his fourth consecutive knockout loss – dropping a second round defeat to current interim division titleholder, Ciryl Gane at UFC 256 in December.

For Pulev, the Bulgarian-born veteran headlined the most recent Triller Triad Combat showcase in November, taking on common-foe, another former UFC heavyweight champion, Frank Mir, in an MMA vs. boxing matchup.

Scoring a dominant first round knockout win. Pulev managed to land his fifteenth professional knockout win in combat sports.

The 40-year-old last featured professionally as a boxer in December of last year, dropping just his second professional loss from a 30-fight career in the form of a ninth round knockout defeat to Anthony Joshua in a WBA, IBF, WBO, IBO heavyweight title fight.

dos Santos, 37, is without a victory since March 2019 where he earned Fight of the Night in an eventual third round knockout win over recent UFC Vegas 45 headliner, Derrick Lewis. The stoppage came as dos Santos’ fifteenth professionally via strikes.

Pulev’s sole other professional boxing loss came against former champion, the heralded, Wladimir Klitschko back in 2014, with the European Championship gold medalist scoring wins over the likes of Tony Thompson, Derek Chisora, Kevin Johnson, Hughie Fury, and Rydell Brooker.

Frank Mir Triad Combat Stoppage “Was Easy”, Per Referee

Frank Mir

Referee Dan Miragliotta has spoken out for the first time since his controversial stoppage of the Frank Mir vs. Kubrat Pulev bout at Triller Triad Combat this past weekend in Texas.

Mir was making his second career boxing appearance after losing to Steve Cunningham on the Jake Paul vs. Ben Askren card earlier this year. He earned a main event spot on the Triller Triad Combat card against Pulev, but it didn’t go his way.

Just seconds into the fight, Pulev caught Mir with a big right hand that had him wobbled against the ropes. Somehow, Mir was able to stay on his feet, but he was completely off balance and wobbly.

After remaining stagnant in the corner, Mir failed to put his hands back up and Miragliotta put a stop to the fight, prompting an odd stoppage from Miragliotta.

Check out the moment below.

Frank Mir’s Fighting Future Is Uncertain

“I was waiting for Pulev to come in,” Miragliotta said in an interview with MMA Fighting. “That would have made it so much easier for me because as soon as he would have made one step as if he was attacked, I was in a position with my left shoulder and the left side of my body to bump him, push him out, and stop the fight. But he didn’t engage – he backed off, and that’s why I kept watching Mir.”

“Then Mir didn’t go down and didn’t put his hands back up – as soon as Pulev made that slight step, I stepped in and stopped the fight. It was easy,” Miragliotta explained.

It’s unclear what could be next for the 42-year-old Mir, whether that be in the boxing ring or in MMA. He’s still looking for his first win in boxing after dropping two straight.

Vitor Belfort Accused Of Ducking Kubrat Pulev

Vitor BelfortVitor Belfort has been accused of ducking a fight with Kubrat Pulev. Vitor Belfort

Vitor Belfort has been accused of ducking a fight with Kubrat Pulev.

The Bulgarian, who is now set to face Frank Mir at Triad Combat on November 27, was originally aiming to fight Belfort in an attempt to get revenge for Evander Holyfield who was recently stopped by ‘The Phenom’.

Belfort realised he was going to fight a real heavyweight, in shape and capable. So I’m sure he did some maths, and coming off the victory against Holyfield, I don’t think he wanted to get smashed, because that’s what Kubrat was going to do, he was going to get a little revenge here for the boxing world,” Pulev’s promoter Ivaylo Gotzev told Betway.

“I believe Belfort came to the realisation that he was going to have to fight a real heavyweight. Vitor, although he fought in the heavyweight division, he is a smaller guy and I believe he backed out, whatever his reasons were. All I know is he backed out and Frank Mir has stepped in, another southpaw but a big one, a true heavyweight and former UFC champion that should make for a good scrap with the new rules.”

“Junior Dos Santos was also mentioned, and he backed out, Vitor Belfort was mentioned and he backed out, Fedor Emeilianenko has just made a comeback but I believe he has a relationship with Bellator. But we want to try out Triad and fight a big man like Frank, we’ll then see where we go from there, we’ll look for the top MMA fighters and carry on with that.”

Vitor Belfort Is Unlikely To Face Oscar De La Hoya Or David Haye

Belfort is expected to return to the boxing ring in the first few months of 2022.

According to his trainer, Derik Santos, the former UFC champion is unlikely to reschedule a fight with Oscar De La Hoya

“It’s likely Vitor will return in the first quarter of next year,” Santos said. “I see Vitor being busy for another year then he’ll probably re-evaluate. I think after a year he’ll move onto new chapters of his life.”

“We have not heard from Oscar De La Hoya, I don’t think we’ll see Oscar back in the ring,” Santos said. “We know he had a problem with Vitor’s rehydration clause. I really think there were some issues there and the writing was on the wall in terms of that fight falling through. I don’t think Oscar was ever training like he said he was training.

Santos also ruled out a fight between Belfort and Haye for very different reasons.

“David Haye is a tool,” Santos said. “He has nothing to talk about. He’s disappointed British fans on more than one occasion. He went 12 rounds and did nothing with a supposed broken toe, not throwing any other punch but a flinging jab against Klitchsko. He fleeced everybody with Klitschko. And then had the nerve to come out here with Fournier, walk around with his buddy and get paid for that, and then call out Tyson Fury. He’s a tool.

“Nobody over here cares about David Haye at all. They all think he’s a tool. Most people here can’t stand him. He has no idea what he’s talking about. He has no idea how hard Vitor Belfort trained to get back. He’s irrelevant. His fight with Fournier was a total farce of a fight. For that reason I’d want nothing to do with anything that puts a ton of money in David Haye’s pocket. I rule him out for Vitor’s next fight. He’s irrelevant, nobody cares about him here, there’s no interest in that at all.”

Do you think Vitor Belfort ducked a fight with Kubrat Pulev?

Anthony Joshua, Kubrat Pulev

Heavyweight world champion Anthony Joshua has had his mandatory title defence against Kubrat Pulev postponed.

The British knockout artist was supposed to face the Bulgarian on June 20 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London.

Unfortunately, due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the fight has now been pushed back with no future date yet set. The event’s promoters Matchroom Boxing announced the news in a statement on social media, it read.

“Confirmed: #JoshuaPulev has been postponed. A new date for the event is currently being worked on. We will announce any updates in due course and continue to explore the possibility of hosting this fight at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.”

Eddie Hearn, the head of the promotional outfit later spoke with broadcast partner Sky Sports to discuss the decision to delay Joshua/Pulev and give fans an idea of when it will be rescheduled for, he said.

“We’re speaking to Tottenham, we’ve postponed the 20th date. We are working with them for dates in July and early August as well when we hope we’ll be back. Hopefully, we see that fight take place at the end of the summer.”

The news of this postponement follows on from Hearn’s decision to postpone all of his events in May which included two pay-per-view shows featuring Dillian Whyte vs. Alexander Povetkin and Oleksandr Usyk vs. Dereck Chisora.

Joshua Pulev

Yesterday it was officially announced that Anthony Joshua would be defending his heavyweight title against mandatory challenger Kubrat Pulev.

After his big fight announcement Joshua sat down with Kugan Cassius of IFL TV to discuss his opponent, what he expects and to give an early fight night prediction, he said.

“He’s been in the game for a while. He went to the top level and then he got defeated. So, he knows his way around the ring. He’s had his chance at the top level and now he’s coming back again. So, he’s probably going to try and get it right. I’ll be expecting a more polished, smarter Pulev and he can bang a bit as well he’s had a few knockouts on his record as well. He can bang and he can box. So, he’s a boxer-puncher, kind of like what my style is as well so it’ll be a good match-up for sure. So, we’re going to box, people will be seeing some skills and they’re probably going to see a knockout as well because you’ve got two boxer-punchers so the best man will come out victorious”

When asked
to make a prediction for the fight. “Round 11,” was all he had to say. Joshua
was very specific with his answer but didn’t really offer any insight as to why.
I guess we’ll have to wait and see on fight night if his very specific prediction
come true.

He’ll be hoping it does as big fights lie in wait after this one against Pulev. Tyson Fury will complete his trilogy with Deontay Wilder in July. Once that it is out the way we could potentially see an all-English heavyweight undisputed fight which would certainly be the biggest boxing bout in Britain has ever seen.

How do you
see Anthony Joshua vs. Kubrat Pulev playing out?
