We’ve got a rather anti-climatic finish to this evening’s UFC Vegas 38 co-headliner, with Kevin Holland vs. Kyle Daukaus officially ruled as a ‘No Contest’ at the end of the first round, due to a clash of heads earlier in the opening frame.
Tying up in the clinch in the opening round, Holland, who had spent considerable time working in tandem with former UFC welterweight champion, Johny Hendricks to improve his wrestling ability, managed to defend several takedown attempts form Philidelphia native Daukaus.
With a pause in the action and a separation due to inactivity, Holland and Daukaus returned to the center where the latter felt the brunt of a head clash, which appeared to knock him unconscious before he faceplanted into the Octagon canvas.
Scrambling to survive as referee, Dan Miragliotta called for a replay, Holland survived a D’Arce choke attempt from Daukaus, before succumbing to a standing rear-naked choke.
Upon review from referee, Miragliotta as well as the Nevada State Athletic Commission at Octagon-side, the bout was ruled an official ‘No Contest’.
Below, catch the highlights from the opening round’s action.

Kyle Daukaus vs. Kevin Holland was everything that was advertised and still ended in controversy.
The two fighters met in a bout on Saturday night (October 2, 2021) at the UFC Vegas 38 event from Las Vegas, Nevada at the UFC Apex facility.
This one didn’t last long as Holland was aggressive and Daukaus worked for an early takedown. That didn’t work as Holland clinched with him up against the fence. They were separated and as Holland missed a left hook, Daukaus accidentally headbutted him and Holland was nearly KO’d so he fell down only to seemingly wake back up when his face hit off the mat. Kyle swarmed him with strikes and got the back in order to lock in the rear-naked choke. The commission took a look at the replay and it was ruled a no contest.
Peep the highlights of the fight courtesy of the UFC’s official Twitter account:
Daukaus went undefeated to earn a contract with the UFC after winning a fight on Dana White’s Contender Series and two bouts after that under the CFFC banner, both coming by submission. He dropped a decision loss to Brendan Allen in June 2020. This bout marked his promotional debut. He rebounded with a win over Dustin Stoltzfus at UFC 255 by decision before dropping a decision loss to Phil Hawes in May 2021.
Holland was fresh off a loss to Marvin Vettori at UFC on ABC 2 by decision after losing to Derek Brunson via unanimous decision at the UFC Vegas 22 event. He entered this previous fights with 8 wins and 2 losses in his UFC career including his latest winning streak, which is 5 straight, with notable victories over Anthony Hernandez, Joaquin Buckley, Darren Stewart, Charlie Ontiveros, and Ronaldo Souza.

It seems as though Kevin Holland did not do as much extensive wrestling training with American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) as we might’ve thought. The Trailblazer has hit a bit of a damp patch at middleweight recently, with dominant, mostly wrestling-based decision losses to both Derek Brunson and Marvin Vettori. Holland has been widely criticised for his poor wrestling and ground game since these two appearances, but he has sought out the very best wrestling sanctuary that he can – the American Kickboxing Academy (AKA) under the tutelage of Javier Mendez. Its incredibly prestigious alumni include such legends as Cain Velasquez, Daniel Cormier, Luke Rockhold and the dominant Khabib Nurmagomedov – in short, there is nowhere better to learn and fix his game.
In the opposing corner, Daukaus happens to be the junior brother of Chris Daukaus, a very good heavyweight prospect in the UFC. Whilst his professional record stands at 10-2, he is just 1-2 in the UFC, with his most recent appearance being a decision loss to Phil Hawes. Daukaus will be hoping to pick up a major name and scalp in Holland, who is still one of the biggest names at 185 pounds.
This fight will be extremely interesting because Daukaus’ game is very largely based on his ground/submission game, the main area that has massively been exposed as Holland’s gaping weakness. This fight will be an intriguing test for Holland, as it will indicate how far Holland’s ground game has developed since he went to AKA for help – only time will ultimately reveal this.
Who do you think will win on October 2? Kevin Holland or Kyle Daukaus?
