UFC Welterweight champion Kamaru Usman recently sat down with ESPN and had some interesting takes on the upcoming Nate Diaz and Leon Edwards bout in May at UFC 262. While Usman is focused on the upcoming bout at UFC 261 with Jorge Masvidal, he did admit that the fight between Diaz and Edwards intrigues him in a multitude of ways.
“Yeah, it’s kind of a funky one,” Usman told ESPN. “They just kind of threw that in there on us but I like it. I really like the fight. I think it’s something that Leon Edwards desperately needed because I recognize his skills and I recognize how hard he’s worked since taking that loss to me. He’s worked very, very hard, he’s improved his wrestling, this guy is taking guys down, he’s submitting guys, he’s going the distance, five rounds with guys and he’s looking great.
“So I respect everything that he has done up to this point but the one thing that’s been lacking is the fact that he just didn’t have that recognition. The casual fans, if you mention his name to them they’re like, ‘Who’s that?’ It sucks to say but that was the case so a fight like this is something that can give him that recognition. If he goes out there and does what I think he’s capable of doing, come that next week people will know who Leon Edwards is and he makes a strong case for himself. You can’t deny him at that point. Eight-fight win streak, with that fight it will probably be nine so yeah it’s tough to deny the man a title shot.”
With the Diaz fight, Edwards is finally getting the opportunity to boost his popularity in a 5 round co-main event against one of then more popular fighters on the roster and grab the top contender spot to fight for the title. And for Diaz, a win over Edwards immediately puts him in title contention, if that’s what he wants which Usman doubts is the case.
“According to me? Absolutely,” Usman said when asked if Diaz would get a title shot with a win. “You know me. I don’t shy away from any challenge. I’ll take on anybody. But according to him? I think that’s the second case to where a fighter just flat out says, ‘You know what? I don’t even want a title shot. I’m good.’”
“I offered it to Conor when Conor was running his mouth that the third belt looked great to him and this and that and I said, ‘Yo, I’m here. I’m available. What date do you want to do it?’ But he was quiet. He didn’t respond. So that’s the first case where a guy was like, ‘You know what? I don’t want none of those problems. I don’t want to do it.’ And I think this will probably be the second case. If he was able to get that win, I think he will definitely be turning down that title shot.”
A Nate win over Edwards would be something to behold and something that could cause a lot of scenarios for the UFC in the Welterweight division. A win for Diaz would open up a flurry of options for someone that already has countless ones. Would Usman take up that challenge?
“Absolutely,” Kamaru Usman said when asked if he’d take the fight. “I want any fight and a fight like that, these are just fun fights for me. I’m starting to have fun with this, so these are just fun fights for me. Whether it’s Nate, whether it’s Leon, whether it’s Covington, they’re all fun fights for me now.” (Transcribed by MMA Fighting)
We’ll have our answers for this division in a month’s time, but for now the speculation and expectations on what could happen are endless for the UFC and this division.

UFC welterweight Belal Muhammad has reacted to missing out on a rematch with Leon Edwards who is now set to fight Nate Diaz at UFC 262.
‘Rocky’ was originally set to fight Khamzat Chimaev in the UFC Vegas 21 main event. The undefeated Swedish fighter was ruled out of the bout due to COVID-19 complications. Muhammad stepped in to save the show.
In his return, Edwards appeared to be performing well hurting and dominating Muhammad in the first round. During the second stanza Muhammad was on the receiving end of a painful, inadvertent eye poke which brought an unfortunate end to the fight.
Post-fight, Edwards revealed despite the inconclusive result he did not want to rematch Muhammad. The Englishman believes he should be moving on to bigger things.
“I belong in a title shot, I have worked my way back up from getting defeated by Kamaru Usman,” Edwards said. “I have fought everybody, I have offered to fight everybody so I feel I deserve A title shot now, why should I do another ten fights to get a title shot you know?”
“Never saw someone act so tough after poking someone in the eye the fight was just getting goin and if your satisfied to end it on that note your soft you ain’t getting a title fight off that I took the fight on 3 week notice and came to fight run it back @ufc,” Muhammad wrote on social media.
It seems like the promotion has sided with Edwards on this one.
The welterweight title is currently tied up as Kamaru Usman is set to defend against Jorge Masvidal at UFC 261.
‘Rocky’ will get the next best thing. A lucrative and high-profile fight with one of the most popular fighters in MMA, Nate Diaz.
Muhammad remained optimistic despite the setback, telling MMA Fighting journalist, Damon Martin, that he will stay ready.
“I’ll stay ready,” Muhammad wrote on Twitter. “Thanks Damon I’ll be waiting on a call @ufc @danawhite @AliAbdelaziz00”
Who do you think Belal Muhammad should fight next?
