The number 3 ranked Welterweight in the world Leon Edwards was scheduled to fight Khamzat Chimaev, however the bout fell through for the third time earlier in the week. Edwards has made it clear that he’s ready to fight and wants to stay on the March 13 card.

Edwards took to Twitter to call out Nate Diaz saying “Nate just dribbled for an hour about wanting to fight at 170 against winners… let’s see it then @NateDiaz209. 8 fight win streak and #3 in the world. Let’s go if you still think you’re a real one”

Diaz would respond to “Rocky’s” call out by tweeting a photoshop of Leon Edwards head on Jeremy Stephens, and tweeting And who the f*ck is this?

Following Diaz’s tweet, Edwards took aim at the UFC Superstar stating “Nate your photoshop skills are as bad as your fight record. and you used Conor’s line wtf.”

It seems like Diaz doesn’t have any interest to take the fight against Edwards, however it seems like the promotion still has big plans for Edwards and are looking to book Edwards vs Colby Covington in a number 1 contender fight. UFC President Dana White White said on Friday “I think what we do now with what happened to Khamzat, we’re looking at Colby vs. Leon,” White stated. “The winner of that fight would fight Usman next.”

Edwards has been away from action for over a year and a half, but to no fault of his own. Since his last fight “Rocky” has been scheduled to fight 4 times, once against Tyron Woodley and three times against Chimaev, however the fights keep getting cancelled for one reason or another. Edwards has been on a 8 fight win streak and is seemingly one win away from a title shot.

In a surprise to many, Leon Edwards has once again been left without an opponent. His scheduled foe Khamzat Chimaev has fallen out of their matchup a second time, citing underlying health issues with COVID-19. The question that is on everybody’s mind is: who should Edwards face now? The perennial contender had just the idea.

Nate Diaz. This has been a person of interest after he spoke out, quoting he wants a fight at 170. With the breakout star Chimaev out of the way, Edwards shoots his shot.

The Stockton-native stated on the Helwani show he wants to fight at the ideal weight of 170lbs, against winners who haven’t been finished. “Rocky” fits that description perfectly, riding 8 wins in a row with his last loss coming at the hands of current champ Kamaru Usman.

Despite the interest in fighting a Pay-Per-View star like Nate Diaz, it seems UFC president Dana White has other plans.

White tells ESPN’s Brett Okamato that he is looking to book Edwars with former UFC interim welterweight champion, Colby Covington. This would be preferably for March 13th, as “Rocky” has been itching for a fight since his latest one being against Rafael Dos Anjos in the summer of 2019.

The UFC Attempting To Book Colby Covington vs. Leon Edwards Next

Well, it seems all may not be lost for perennial UFC welterweight contender, Leon Edwards. Seeing his UFC Vegas 21 matchup against Khamzat Chimaev fall to the wayside yet again, the Birmingham native may be lined up for a short-notice replacement, in an even higher-profile pairing.

Speaking with media ahead of UFC 258 this weekend at the UFC Apex facility in Las Vegas, Nevada — UFC president, Dana White detailed how the organization are currently attempting to put together a potential title-eliminator tie between former interim gold holder, Colby Covington and the above mentioned, Edwards.

Whilst hopeful of seeing Covington draft in on the original March 13th. Fight Night date, White remained optimistic, although noted the matchup may have to be pushed back further — with talks still at a preliminary stage as of writing.

Forced to withdraw from a matchup with Edwards, captivating AllStars force, Chimaev is still dealing with lingering health issues stemming from a positive COVID-19 test late last year, which forced him from a UFC Fight Island 7 headliner with Edwards in January.

Failing to feature despite his best efforts since UFC Fight Night San Antonio back in July of 2019 — Edwards was forced to withdraw from a UFC Vegas 17 matchup with the #15 ranked Chimaev following a particularly debilitating COVID-19 contraction of his own.

Taking headlining honours at the AT&T Center main event in Texas, Edwards took home a unanimous decision win over one-time undisputed lightweight gold holder, Rafael dos Anjos — notching his eight consecutive victory following his 2015 loss to current champion, Kamaru Usman.

Forever linked with a matchup against former friend and American Top Team teammate, Jorge Masvidal, Covington seems to be on the brink of a return himself, just not against the Floridian.

Rebounding from his UFC 245 title tilt loss to rival Usman back in December of 2019, Covington dropped a fifth-round knockout defeat in an instant classic title fight. Returning at UFC Vegas 11 in September, Covington took on former champion, Tyron Woodley in another grudge-match — overcoming the St. Louis native in the fifth round via a rib injury after a one-sided display for the prior four frames.

Whilst the promotion have yet to officially book Covington and Edwards in a sure to be anticipated matchup, it’s clear the organization look to restore some order to the division and offer the duo a clear path to either respective rematches against Usman, or this weekend’s challenger, Gilbert Burns if he emerges victorious.

UFC welterweight contender Leon Edwards does not want to delay his return to MMA any longer after Khamzat Chimaev once again pulled out of their main event match-up.

The undefeated Swedish prospect has been suffering with the long-term impacts of COVID-19. Edwards and Chimaev have been booked to face one another three times, first in December of 2020, secondly in January this year, however, due to both athletes getting COVID these fights fell through.

UFC president Dana White now appears to move on from this fight after it was scrapped for a third time. He told ESPN that his team are currently working on getting Edwards a new opponent.

“There’s something wrong with his lungs they’re putting him on medication again and he’s out of that fight so Shaun is literally in the other room right now working on a fight for Leon Edwards.”

“I was so excited, that was one of my favorite fights this year,” White added. “The one thing you have to look at right now is health. Let’s make sure this guy is healthy, get him the best care we can, and make sure he makes a full recovery.”

Ariel Helwani took to social media earlier today to reveal Edwards is determined to fight on March 13 and is hoping Jorge Masvidal, Colby Covington or Nate Diaz will step up to the plate.

“Leon Edwards is very adamant on staying on the March 13 card, per his manager Tim Simpson,” Helwani wrote. “He doesn’t want to delay his return any longer. As a result, Wonderboy isn’t an option because his hands are still injured from the Neal fight and he’ll only be able to return in May/June. Per Simpson, Edwards wants Jorge Masvidal, Colby Covington … or Nathan Diaz on March 13.”
