With all the obstacles preventing Kamaru Usman and Colby Covington from competing, Leon Edwards expects to get the next title shot this year.

Usman and Covington were seemingly slated to collide for the welterweight title at UFC 244 in November. However, Nate Diaz vs. Jorge Masvidal was booked instead for the BMF title. Covington later revealed he was being lowballed by the UFC while there were issues on Usman’s side as well.

Edwards is hoping to capitalize on the situation and claims he was told he would be next if Covington couldn’t agree to a fight:

“They said if the Colby (Covington) fight can’t get done, then I’m the next in line, so I believe I will be next in December,” Edwards said on Ariel Helwani’s MMA Show on Monday (via MMA Junkie). “… They’re at a stalemate. I think Colby (Covington) is asking for too much money or whatever it is, but I put my name in the hat, and I told them I am ready to go. I deserve the shot, I’m on the second most win streak in the whole division, so I believe I deserve the shot.”

“Rocky” has won his last seven in a row, including an impressive unanimous decision win over Rafael dos Anjos. His last loss? To Usman back in 2015. That is why he has repeatedly called for the next shot.

And he is ready for December should the UFC grant his wish:

“It feels like the whole division is on standby,” Edwards added. “I am ready to go. I’m fit. I’m healthy. I am pushing for the Usman fight; I feel like I deserve that fight, so that’s where I’m at. I know the Colby (Covington) fight’s not happening – that’s what I’m hearing – so I’m ready to go in December.”

What do you think of an Usman vs. Edwards fight? Who wins?

Leon Edwards feels he should be given the next shot at Kamaru Usman’s welterweight title over Colby Covington.

Many expect Usman to defend his title against Covington, especially given their rivalry and the latter’s impressive performance against Robbie Lawler. However, it is still not booked and with UFC 244 being headlined by Nate Diaz vs. Jorge Masvidal, one wonders if Covington is getting skipped over again.

That is completely fine by Edwards, who believes he should get another crack at Usman:

“F—k Colby Covington,” Edwards told MMA Fighting. “I don’t like Colby anyways. I don’t give a s—t about what he’s doing. My thing is to get a world title shot. Let’s me and Kamaru run it back. We’ve got the most wins in the division, we’re the two best in the division. Let’s run it back.”

Edwards most recently outpointed Rafael dos Anjos and is on an eight-fight winning streak. His last loss? A decision defeat to Usman. Which is why it makes sense for them to fight according to the Birmingham native:

“For me that would be perfect — him having the title and me taking it off him — that would be the fairytale story,” Edwards added. “To defeat the last man to defeat me for the title, I hope I get the chance to do that. My message [to Kamaru Usman] is let’s run it back. We fought years ago and let’s run it back so I can get the title off you.”

“I have paid my dues. I’ve done everything they’ve asked me to do. I flew across the world to fight [Rafael dos Anjos], I flew across the world to fight “Cowboy” [Donald Cerrone]. I’ve fought back to back. I’m on an eight-fight win streak, second only to the current champion. I have more than paid my price to get a world title shot.”

Do you think Edwards should get the next shot? Or does Covington deserve it no matter what?

Leon Edwards has been calling for a fight with Jorge Masvidal for quite some time. Yet, with Nate Diaz and “Gamebred” agreeing to fight each other, the fight may not happen after all.

Now, the question of who Edwards fights next is a big one. He is currently ranked fourth in the division, yet, he still wants the Masvidal fight.

“Obviously, I want the fight. Now it’s up to him and his fat manager,” Edwards said to MMA Fighting. “I am willing to fight in November. I will co-main event [Kamaru] Usman-[Colby] Covington and whoever wins gets a title shot.

“Even though I feel I deserve a title shot right now, I will put my eight-fight win streak against his two-fight win streak just to prove my case that I’m the best fighter in the world plus I get to smack his head off so that’s just a win-win for me.”

But, if Leon Edwards does not get the fight against Jorge Masvidal he is open to another fight and that is against Tyron Woodley. The former champion is coming off of a loss at UFC 235 to Kamaru Usman to lose the belt.

Why the Englishman would want that fight is simple. He says it should guarantee a title shot, but remains adamant he wants the Masvidal scrap.

“If it’s guaranteed a title shot next then probably,” Edwards said when asked about potentially facing Woodley. “Like I said, I want that Masvidal fight. That’s the biggest fight to make. I feel like me and Woodley, we’ve got no animosity, there’s nothing there other than a chance to beat a former world champion.

“I feel Masvidal is the fight to make and that’s the one I’m pushing for. But if they come with Woodley with good money, I’ll do it as well. Pay me and I’ll show up.”
