Colby Covington warns Leon Edwards UFC don't cross the boss

After initially warning undisputed UFC welterweight champion, Leon Edwards that he will be stripped of his crown if he rejects a fight with him next – Colby Covington has now warned the Birmingham native to avoid crossing president, Dana White.

Covington, a former interim welterweight champion and current #2 ranked division contender, has been sidelined since UFC 272 back in March of last year, defeating arch-rival, Jorge Masvidal in a unanimous decision triumph.

Attending UFC 286 last weekend in London, England, Clovis native, Covington served as an official backup to the main event fight between Edwards and Kamaru Usman – successfully making welterweight championship weight.

Following his successul, majority decision title defense against common-foe, Usman, Edwards was pencilled in by the aforenoted, White to face Covington next.

Calling for a showdown with Edwards at UFC 290 during International Fight Week in July, Colby Covington saw his call out rebuffed by the former, who questioned how he deserved a title fight.

Colby Covington issues another warning to Leon Edwards

Warning the Team Renegade BJJ & MMA staple that he would lose his welterweight crown if he elected against fighting him next, Covington has now urged Edwards against upsetting promotional leader, White.

Covington, who holds victories over former welterweight champions, Robbie Lawler, and Tyron Woodley – scooped interim division spoils with a decision win over former lightweight kingpin, Rafael dos Anjos.

In a pair of title fights with the above-mentioned Auchi native, Usman, Colby Covington first suffered a fifth round TKO loss, and then a one-sided unanimous decision rematch defeat.

Sharing his thoughts on Edwards potentially rejecting a fight with the former American Top Team staple, White explained how the Birmingham native will have to get used to leading from the front of a chasing pack of challengers.

Defendjng Covington’s much-criticized shot a gold, White also claimed Edwards has sat out of competition for two years before receiving his very own title shot.

Dana White justify Colby Covington ufc title shot Leon Edwards sat out 2 years

UFC president, Dana White is adamant that former interim welterweight titleholder, Colby Covington will challenge for undisputed division gold next, pointing to the fact current champion, Leon Edwards received his own title affair despite his own lenghty Octagon layoff.

Edwards, the current undisputed welterweight champion, most recently headlined UFC 286 earlier this month in a championship trilogy rubber match against former pound-for-pound number one, Kamaru Usman – defending his title in a close, majority decision victory.

Off the back of his decision win over Usman, Birmingham native, Leon Edwards was all but penned to fight former interim titleholder, Covington next – with UFC president, White initially confirming the #2 ranked contender would be fighting for undisputed spoils next.

Calling for a July matchup during International Fight Week at UFC 290, Covington’s campaign has been knocked back by Edwards, who has questioned the legitimacy of his championship challenge, and claimed the pairing made no sense next.

Doubling down on his stance that Covington will receive the next shot at gold, White explained that Leon Edwards will now have a target on his back following his successful title defense on home soil.

“Colby Covington deserves this shot at the title,” Dana White told assembled media following UFC San Antonio. “I don’t blame Leon (Edwards) – Leon just got through (Kamaru) Usman twice and now he’s looking at another wrestler now, with a funky style that’s tough to deal with. When you become the champ, everybody’s coming after you.”

“All the straight killers are coming after you and for the next three times a f*cking year, you’re faced with nothing but the baddest dudes in the world in your division,” Dana White explained.

Dana White points to Leon Edwards’ extended lay off prior to his own title tilt

Attempting to make Edwards see sense, White pointed to the fact that Edwards earned his title shot against Usman in August of last year off the back of his own extended period away from active competition.

“Leon didn’t fight for like almost two years, he got the shot,” Dana White explained.

Dana White suggests Leon Edwards doesn’t want to fight wrestler next amid rejection of Colby Covington clash

Dana WhiteDana White doubled down on his comment that Colby Covington would be the next man to challenge Leon Edwards for the UFC welterweight championship. Dana White

Dana White doubled down on his comment that Colby Covington would be the next man to challenge Leon Edwards for the UFC welterweight championship.

After successfully defending his title at UFC 286 earlier this month, ‘Rocky’ was informed that he would be expected to defend his 170-pound crown against the outspoken conservative wrestler later this year. That didn’t sit well with Edwards or most of the MMA community. During an appearance on The MMA Hour, Edwards contradicted his boss, saying that he would not fight Covington next and would instead turn his attention toward a more deserving contender, namely Belal Muhammad.

On Saturday night following UFC San Antonio, Dana White reiterated his original statement and wondered why anyone would suggest Colby Covington is not deserving of a title opportunity. When one member of the media referenced Covington’s lack of activity inside the Octagon, Dana White responded by saying:

“Well, he got jumped and was actually injured from that,” White snapped back. “Leon didn’t fight for almost two years. He got the shot. Listen, it’s not like I’m a big, ‘Oh Colby, Colby’ ya know? Colby Covington deserves the shot at the title and I don’t blame Usman. Leon just got through Usman twice and he’s looking at another wrestler with a funky style. That’s tough to deal with, but that’s it. When you become the champ, everybody’s coming after you. All the straight killers are coming at you for the next three times a f*cking year. You’re faced with nothing, but the baddest dudes in the world in your division.

And just in case Dana White wasn’t completely clear, he made sure to say it one more time.

“You’re the man Leon. You’re the guy. Everybody’s coming after you and it’s gonna be Colby next.”

Despite Dana White’s Insistence, Leon Edwards vs. Colby Covington Makes No Sense

While Colby Covington’s lack of activity can be easily explained by injuries sustained at the hands of Jorge Masvidal outside of a Miami steakhouse last March, the UFC president didn’t address the fact that ‘Chaos’ is 2-2 in his last four with both losses coming in UFC title fights against then-champion Kamaru Usman. As for the wins, Covington bested Tyron Woodley, a fighter who is not currently on the UFC roster, and the aforementioned Jorge Masvidal, a fighter who is in the middle of a three-fight losing streak. Hardly impressive wins for a man that sits in the No. 2 spot of the welterweight rankings.

Meanwhile, fighters like Belal Muhammad are forced to continuously rack up wins with little to show for it. ‘Remember the Name’ has won eight in a row with the last three coming against fighters in the top ten including Sean Brady, Vicente Luque, and Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thomspon. Covington has not defeated any fighter in the division’s current top ten. Add in a lack of notable wins and two failed title opportunities already in the books and one thing becomes abundantly clear.

Colby Covington getting a title fight against Leon Edwards makes little sense. Clearly Dana White doesn’t see it that way and in the end, that’s all that matters, unfortunately.

Jorge Masvidal predicts Gilbert Burns clash at UFC 287: ‘I’ll paint my Van Gogh on his face’

Jorge MasvidalJorge Masvidal plans to make a modern art masterpiece using Gilbert Burns’ face next month when the two welterweight standouts square off inside the Octagon. ‘Gamebred’ will attempt to get back into the win column for the first time since 2019, but it will be no easy task when he meets No. 5 ranked contender […]

Jorge Masvidal

Jorge Masvidal plans to make a modern art masterpiece using Gilbert Burns’ face next month when the two welterweight standouts square off inside the Octagon.

‘Gamebred’ will attempt to get back into the win column for the first time since 2019, but it will be no easy task when he meets No. 5 ranked contender Gilbert Burns at UFC 287 on April 8. Before his highly anticipated return to action, Jorge Masvidal shared some honest thoughts on his next opponent and creatively labeled the next chapter of his combat sports career during an interview with MMA Junkie.

“This chapter would be Gilbert ‘The Stepping Stone’ Burns,” Masvidal said. “It’s no disrespect to Gilbert and stuff, ‘cause I think he’s a good competitor. He comes to fight, you know? And things like that for the most part. But we’ve never been on the same skillset. And then as far as like gameness goes, as far as like toughness and durability and you know, that sturdiness, he’s never had it either.

“He gets cracked and he starts skating. So I don’t know, he’s good in the jiu-jitsu world but his wrestling ain’t that. And I’ve only been focusing these last six months on making sure that I can deal with these wrestlers efficiently. Get to positions efficiently, not waste as much energy” (transcription by MMA News).

Jorge Masvidal is Ready to Make a Statement Against Gilbert Burns

Jorge Masvidal plans to display his artistic side at UFC 287, using his large palette of skills to paint a violent picture with Gilbert Burns’ face as the canvas.

“So I’m gonna tell you that I’m gonna paint my Van Gogh on Gilbert’s face man. With elbows, knees, kicks, takedown defense, takedown offense. All of that good stuff, I’m gonna bring it. And just like when I started my career, just go out there and fight and have fun. It’s not a game because there’s a lot I risk, but at the same time this is my pickup basketball game, this is my soccer game, this is my baseball game, this is what I enjoy doing. So I don’t need to do anything any more than that, just go out there and do it.”

Despite being on a three-fight losing skid, Jorge Masvidal could very well be one big win away from a UFC title opportunity against reigning welterweight champion Leon Edwards. ‘Gamebred’ could skyrocket to the top five of the division with a win over Burns, but more importantly, there is already a history between Edwards and himself. That could play a big role in the UFC’s decision-making once next month’s pay-per-view at Miami-Dade Arena is in the books.

Colby Covington claims Jon Jones Ciryl Gane fight looked rigged UFC

Upon the arrival of the UFC’s consensus greatest fighter of all time, a heavyweight debut proved to be successful, but Colby Covington suspects match fixing.

After a three-year layoff, Jon Jones took center stage at UFC 285 against a very dangerous and unique heavyweight, Ciryl Gane.

In just two minutes, Jones submitted Gane in a near flawless performance to become the undisputed UFC heavyweight champion.

Colby Covington, who continues to make new foes on a daily basis, has never had kind words to share about Jones.

The two were college roommates at Iowa Central Community College for two years according to Covington, and he accused Jones of several wrongdoings such as steroid usage.

Jones has come out and denied ever sharing a room with Covington which raised many questions.

In a recent interview with James Lynch, Colby Covington said that there is a genuine possibility of match-fixing in favour of Jones.

“Honestly, it looked like it was a work,” he added. “It looks like it was a fix. Maybe Jon Jones’ brothers went over to France and told Ciryl that they’re gonna pay him under the table to take a dive because that’s honestly what it looked like.”

Jones stole the world’s attention during his return at the T-Mobile Arena, and has since reclaimed his suitable position as the pound-for-pound #1.

Surprisingly, Covington did not question this decision, and he in fact believes that Jones is deserving of that top ranking.

“He probably should,” Covington said. “He’s never lost a fight in the Octagon. He has that one loss, it’s a DQ, but his body of work definitely speaks a lot more volumes than Islam [Makhachev]. He hasn’t even defended the belt yet, so I have no problem with that.”

Colby Covington campaigns for UFC welterweight title shot

Covington was seen front row at UFC 286 yelling at Leon Edwards, calling for his title shot.

During the post fight press conference, Dana White confirmed that Colby Covington is next in line to challenge Edwards for his belt.

35-year-old ‘Chaos’ has not fought since UFC 272, where he came out with a dominant decision victory in a very personal rubber match with Jorge Masvidal.

Jorge Masvidal claims he fights Leon Edwards after UFC 286 insider information

Former two-time undisputed UFC welterweight title challenger, Jorge Masvidal has claimed to be privy to some “insider information” ahead of his return to the Octagon next month against Gilbert Burns, claiming he will fight for gold against Leon Edwards before arch-rival, Colby Covington.

Masvidal, the current #11 ranked welterweight contender, has been sidelined since UFC 272 back in March of last year, suffering a one-sided, unanimous decision loss against the above-mentioned former interim division titleholder, Covington in the pair’s long-awaited grudge-match in Las Vegas.

Returning to active competition at UFC 287 next month in his native Miami, Florida – Jorge Masvidal takes co-headlining honors against the aforenoted, Burns – beneath a middleweight championship rematch between Alex Pereira, and Israel Adesanya.

Jorge Masvidal alludes to an immediate title fight with Leon Edwards post-UFC 287

And ahead of his co-main event return in the ‘Sunshine State’ against Burns, Masvidal claims that he has received some “insider information” – which would see him challenge for welterweight spoils against the above-noted, Edwards, despite the fact Covington has been tipped to fight for gold next.

“I’m fighting Gilbert (Burns), then I’m fighting Leon (Edwards),” Jorge Masvidal told MMA Junkie Radio during a recent interview. “I’m telling you that’s how it’s going to play out. I just got some insider information.”

Masvidal’s bold claims come off the back of a contradiction from UFC president, Dana White, who confirmed following UFC 286 that Edwards would be defending his undisputed crown against the brash, outspoken, Covington next – with the Clovis native calling for a UFC 290 showdown during International Fight Week in July.

Vowing to earn his way back to a rematch with former American Top Team training partner, Covington in the near future, Masvidal, who was involved in an altercation with the former outside a Miami steakhouse last April – promised to “murder” Covington under the UFC banner in a future re-run
