Lorenzo Fertitta Working on Hendo vs. Fedor

After Zuffa purchased Strikeforce during its most recent game of MMA Monopoly (it was right beside the WFA, two spots before Free Parking), one of the more discussed topics was what would go down with Fedor Emelianenko and M-1 Global. If you’re new to the sport, then you might not know that UFC boss man Dana White and the Russian star’s management aren’t exactly bestest buddies .

Of course, Fedor hasn’t exactly been bolstering his bargaining position by losing back-to-back fights to Fabricio Werdum and Antonio Silva, but despite his recent setbacks, people are still keen to see him tussle. For example, when reports surfaced stating Strikeforce was trying to put together a fight between Dan Henderson and Fedor, we, like many others, were pretty damn happy. Well, the good news is that Zuffa apparently is going to do their part to git r done as well. White reported this week at the UFC 129 pre-fight festivities (thanks to MMA Junkie for the quote) :

“Lorenzo’s working on it,” White said Thursday. “Me getting anywhere near that thing? You’ll never see that fight.”… “I’ve been out of it,” White added.  “Me involved in that situation would only make matters worse. The great thing about this company and the way we do things – there’s a lot of people I butt heads with. Lorenzo can handle it, and then I can handle stuff. (UFC matchmaker) Joe Silva handles stuff.”

Yes, feel free to wipe your forehead, as it’s looking more and more like this bout will happen. Speaking of UFC 129, to bet on any of the fights head here.

In the end, the impetus to the surprising Zuffa-Strikeforce deal was not the UFC’s goal of world domination, or the expensive contract of Fedor Emelianenko. Instead, it was a ball and a hoop.

In May 2008, San Jose, California-based Silicon Valley Sports & Entertainment (SVSE) acquired a 50 percent stake in Strikeforce and became its major financial engine. The relationship helped spur the expansion of the upstart MMA promotion, but it ultimately came with an unforeseen cost. SVSE had long desired to bring an NBA franchise to San Jose, and as that goal started to become more attainable, SVSE found itself faced with a decision: Look over the continued growth of Strikeforce, or focus on its core arena sports businesses with an eye on professional basketball.

With that, Strikeforce was the odd man out.

UFC Bosses Say Deal Doesn’t Constitute Monopoly; Union Up to Fighters

With UFC parent company Zuffa swallowing up its biggest competitor Strikeforce, the dynamics of competition around the mixed martial arts world shifted in a way the sport has never seen. There isn’t a single promotion anywhere on the globe that can come close to matching the scope of Zuffa’s breadth and reach. The company now has television deals with Spike, Versus and Showtime, is the biggest pay-per-view provider in history, and could potentially tap into existing relationships with Strikeforce partner CBS and new Comcast partner NBC.

Yet despite the sport’s 800-pound gorilla adding on further muscle, company bosses Lorenzo Fertitta and Dana White deny that the company has a monopoly on the MMA business.

On a Monday conference call officially announcing the transaction, Fertitta, a co-owner of parent company Zuffa as well as UFC executive, dismissed talk that the deal could open the promotion to anti-trust issues.

Although UFC President Dana White insists that things will remain “business as usual” now that his company has purchased Strikeforce, one rules change will be implemented: Elbows to the head on the ground will now be allowed in Strikeforce.

UFC Chairman and CEO Lorenzo Fertitta said on a conference call announcing the purchase Monday that Strikeforce will implement all of the unified rules of mixed martial arts that the UFC uses, and that includes allowing elbows to the head on the ground. The banning of those elbows has been the one significant difference between Strikeforce fights and UFC fights, and that difference will go away.

The UFC overtaking boxing as the No. 1 pay-per-view draw in sports over the last few years has led to a number of boxing promoters taking shots at the UFC. But the most famous promoter in boxing thinks thinks it’s time to learn from the UFC.

In a live chat with FanHouse readers, Don King said that UFC has been smart about putting good fights on basic cable to attract fans who will become pay-per-view customers while boxing has declined on basic cable and completely disappeared from over-the-air television.

“Unfortunately the television networks are not broadcasting the fighters and that has been a major disappointment,” King said. “Dana White and Lorenzo Fertitta have done a great job with the UFC and people like what they do.”
