UFC on FOX 24 emanated from the Sprint Center in Kansas City, MO tonight (Saturday, April 15, 2017). The stacked card was headlined by Demetrious Johnson’s record-tying tenth straight successful title defense against Wilson Reis.

Johnson put on a masterclass performance. After having a surprisingly hard time with Tim Elliott, who won the 24th season of ‘The Ultimate Fighter’ to earn himself a title shot, “Mighty Mouse” was in control from start to finish against Reis. Too fast, too elusive, and too technical for the Brazilian challenger, Johnson worked his prey over, gradually wearing him down before finishing him with a third-round armbar. Johnson banked one of the $50,000 Performance of the Night bonuses and vowed to break the title defense record his next time out.

The other $50,000 Performance of the Night check went to another main card fighter. Robert Whittaker picked up the most impressive victory of his career, by far, by TKO-ing Jacare Souza in the second round of their featured middleweight bout. The Brazilian grappling phenom failed to keep Whittaker down for any length of time and was forced to deal with the Kiwi’s dangerous striking. It did not go well. A head kick and follow-up ground and pound put an end to Jacare’s title aspirations and announced Whittaker as perhaps the most exciting contender at 185 pounds.

Fight of the Night was wrapped up as soon as Tim Elliott and Louis Smolka started their scramble-fest for the ages. Elliott hit takedown after takedown, only for the Hawaiian to continually threaten with submissions and sweeps. Both flyweights found themselves in dire straits on the mat on multiple occasions in a thrilling back-and-forth affair. In the end, Elliott’s deluge of takedowns and advances won him a unanimous decision, but both men walked away $50,000 richer.

Ronda Rousey Suspended Following Loss to Amanda Nunes

Amanda Nunes’ pummeling of Ronda Rousey at UFC 207 last weekend means that the former champ is required to take a six-week break from action.

Confirmation of post-fight medical suspensions was issued on Tuesday by The Nevada State Athletic Commission. Question marks may still hang over Rousey’s return to the octagon, but what is certainly out of her hands is a mandatory suspension from competitive action until February 14th.

“Rowdy” is not alone in the incurring of a suspension. Co-headliner Dominick Cruz’s title loss to Cody Garbrandt also came with a significant cut above his eye. The damage incurred in the bout with “No Love” means that Cruz is too restricted from activity until February 2016. Garbrandt is also suspended, but only until January 30th.

The hard hitting John Lineker, who was overwhelmed in his defeat to TJ Dillashaw, suffered a broken jaw which means that he will likely be suspended until June 29th, should he not receive clearance from a physician.

Another mandatory, six-month suspension looks to be on the cards for Ray Borg,  following the left ankle injury suffered during his fight with Louis Smolka. The commission have requested x-rays to be produced by “The TazMexican Devil”. Should a break be confirmed, an orthopedic doctor’s clearance will be required in lieu of a suspension until June 29th.

Alex Oliveira’s no contest bout with Tim Means at UFC 207 was notable for the illegal blows which broke his nose. Oliveira must obtain clearance from a doctor, or also face maximum punishment which will also rule him out until June 29th.

UFC 207: Amanda Nunes vs. Ronda Rousey – suspension list:

Ronda Rousey — suspended until 2/14/17 with no contact until 1/30/17

Cody Garbrandt — suspended until 1/30/17 with no contact until 1/21/17

Dominick Cruz — suspended until 2/14/17 with no contact until 1/30/17 due to left eyebrow laceration

John Lineker — Must have broken jaw cleared by ENT or oral maxillofacial surgeon or no contest until 6/29/17;  minimum suspension until 1/30/17 with no contact until 1/21/17

Ray Borg — Must have left ankle x-rayed. If positive then he must have clearance by an orthopedic doctor or no contest until 6/29/17; minimum suspension until 1/30/17 with no contact until 1/21/17

Louis Smolka — suspended until 2/14/17 with no contact until 1/30/17 due to lacerations on both eyes

Johny Hendricks — suspended until 2/14/17 with no contact until 1/30/17 due to right scalp laceration

Marvin Vettori — suspended until 1/21/17 with no contact until 1/14/17

Mike Pyle — suspended until 3/1/17 with no contact until 2/14/17

Niko Price — Must have right big toe x-rayed, if positive then must be cleared by orthopedic doctor or no contest until 6/29/17. Minimum suspension until 1/30/17 with no contact until 1/21/17

The main card of UFC 207 began with a flyweight bout between Louis Smolka (11-3) and the newest addition to the Jackson-Wink MMA team, Ray Borg (10-2).

Smolka showed heart, but this one was never close.

Yesterday morning, “The Tazmexican Devil” failed to make weight and missed the 126-pound mark by three and a half pounds. He will forfeit 20 percent of his purse to “Da Last Samurai.”

Smolka established distance early with his jab. Borg tied his opponent up and landed a knee to the body. Smolka grabbed a leg, but they separated. Borg missed a lunging kick, but earned top control when his opponent went for a back. He locked in a D’arce choke and used it to move to Smolka’s back. Borg returned to side control. They stood up, but “The Tazmexican Devil” slammed his opponent back down.

Borg achieved full mount on a bloody Smolka. He trapped his opponent’s arm in an omoplata position. Borg took the back of Smolka and landed a hard punch and a knee to the body. The round ended with Borg in full guard.

Borg was aggressive in the second round with kicks. Borg got a hold of “Da Last Samurai” and the two scrambled on the ground. Borg wound up in side control. He mounted Smolka, but “Da Last Samurai” went for a leg lock. Borg avoided danger by dropping a big punch and returned to side control. He threatened with an arm triangle. Smolka went for a guillotine choke, but he wasn’t close to doing any damage. The round came to a close with Smolka attempting an armbar.

At the end of the round, Borg told his corner he thought he broke his ankle but didn’t appear to be limping.

Borg moved to the clinch at the start of the final frame and pushed his opponent to the fence. “The Tazmexican Devil” brought Smolka down. He locked in an arm triangle, but let go of it. The two returned to the feet. A step in elbow for Smolka landed. Borg went for a spinning elbow and the round ended shortly after.

All three judges scored the fight for Borg.

Final Result: Ray Borg def. Louis Smolka via unanimous decision (30-27, 30-26, 30-26)

Ray Borg: ‘I’ve Caught More Heat For Leaving FIT NHB Than Anyone Else’

No. 13 ranked Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) flyweight Ray Borg will share the Octagon with Louis Smolka this Friday night (Dec. 30). The bout is expected to serve as UFC 207’s main card opener. Both men had their winning streaks snapped recently and are looking to get back on track.

“The Tazmexican Devil” last fought in February of this year. He fell short in his bout with Justin Scoggins at UFC Fight Night: Hendricks vs. Thompson. Borg told Ariel Helwani of MMAFighting that he’s ready to turn things around now that he made the jump to Jackson-Wink MMA.

“I made a switch because I felt I needed some growth in my career. I felt like being 23 and starting to plateau was not the most ideal thing. I have a feeling you guys are gonna see all those results on Friday.”

Borg admitted that things didn’t go his way this year. Not wanting to look back to the past, he said his decision to change camps was the right one.

“It’s been a roller coaster ride for 2016. It was a hard decision to make [but] I made it and I feel like it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.”

The Albuquerque Journal recently revealed Borg was being sued by his former coach and manager Tom Vaughn of FIT NHB. Vaughn claims Borg owes his company $3,600 and is also seeking $1,100 in attorney’s fees. Borg said it’s an unfortunate situation.

“It’s very disappointing because it could’ve been talked out a little bit easier rather than going this route, but he’s felt the need to do this towards me. I’ve caught more heat for leaving FIT than Donald Sanchez, Carlos Condit [and] anyone that’s left FIT.”

Whether or not this issue gets resolved, “The Tazmexican Devil” will need to put it on ice if he is to perform to the best of his abilities this Friday night.

In the debut episode of the new MMANews.com podcast, Pony Keg Fights, Tim Thompson and Josh Stephens are here to bring you the most up to date news in MMA along with great fight recaps as well as some great interviews!

In episode one of the new show, UFC Flyweight contender Louis Smolka joins the guys to talk about his upcoming fight on the UFC 207 pay-per-view main card against Ray Borg. Smolka also discusses what it’s like being a fighter right now in Hawaii, his unfiltered thoughts on possibly fighting Sergio Pettis in the future after the younger brother of the former UFC Lightweight Champion pulled out of their originally scheduled meeting inside the Octagon due to an injury.

When asked about the possibility of a fight against Sergio Pettis, Smolka mentioned having reservations of booking the fight again due to his belief that Pettis could potentially pull out like he did the first time around.

“I don’t want him to pull out again, so I’d be kind of hesitant to take the fight but I’ll fight whatever,” Smolka told Pony Keg Fights host Tim Thompson during his appearance on the debut edition of the new MMANews.com podcast. “You know what I mean? But I’m not really trying to wait around for this kid who may or may not show up. Who may or may not get injured or whatever his problem may be. I’m not really trying to wait for that, ya know? Like, I’ll do it if I have to but it’s not the most appealing thing to me, ya know? I really don’t want to do another fight camp for nothing, cause I’m not going to take some late notice fight again. I learned from that, so I really don’t want to have to do that again. Ya know?”

When asked about any anger he may have towards Sergio, Smolka completely let loose, making his true feelings about the fellow UFC Flyweight contender quite clear.

“He’s a clown dude, he’s a freaking monkey,” said Smolka. “He’s a jackass! That kids a f*cking idiot, dude! F*ck him!”

Before a potential fight with Sergio Pettis can happen, Smolka will first stand across the Octagon from Ray Borg at next Friday’s UFC 207: Nunes vs. Rousey event. With Jessica Andrade being pulled from the show due to issues with her originally scheduled opponents, the two are now scheduled meet on the pay-per-view main card of what will be UFC’s final pay-per-view event of 2016.
