Ever since Michael Bisping won the UFC middleweight championship with a shocking first-round knockout of heavily favored Luke Rockhold in the main event of June 4’s UFC 199 from Inglewood, California, there has been a seemingly never-ending stream of potential contenders for ‘The Count’s’ belt.

Rockhold understandably wants his rematch, former champion Chris Weidman wants the title shot he was supposed to get against Rockhold, and even Bisping’s old nemesis Dan Henderson has been thrown in the hat after ‘The Count’ said he wanted to finally settle their score from 2009’s UFC 100 (and ‘Hendo’ knocked out Hector Lombard in devastating fashion).

And then things were taken to an all-new – and unexpected – level earlier this week when all-time great former welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre revealed that he was willing to return for a title fight against Bisping if he could only get his contract situation with the UFC sorted. Weidman was quick to point that Bisping was perhaps taking ‘easy fights’ in order to hold on to his belt, but the fact remained that any fight with ‘GSP’ – even a title fight in a weight class he had never fought in – was big money bout that simply could not be passed up.

But there’s apparently yet another big name to throw his hat into the ‘Bisping Sweepstakes,’ as ‘The Count’ revealed on ‘The Countdown’ podcast that he had recently hung out with popular bad boy Nick Diaz, and the Stockton slugger levied a challenge for a bout, albeit with a somewhat strange stipulation:

“I’ll tell you something as well, another possible opponent that hasn’t been spoken about, and I was with him a couple of night ago in New York, I bumped into him in New York – Nick Diaz. He’s like, ‘Man, we should fight, we should fight.’ I’m like, ‘Yeah, I’m down to fight you no problem.’ And then he says, ‘But we have to do it at 178.’ I’m like, ‘What do you mean 178?’ He said we do a catch weight at 178. I’m like, ‘Let’s just do 185.’ He’s like, ‘Nope. 178.’ So anyway, I had a good time with Nick, by the way, we had a couple of drinks and hung out, he’s a good dude.”

Asked about the reasoning behind Diaz’ strange request, Bisping said he didn’t know and didn’t ask:

“For sure. I don’t know, he didn’t elaborate, and I’d had a couple of drinks, so I didn’t really think to ask the question. He definitely wanted to fight at 178, which is kind of a curious weight. But there you go, there’s another potential name.”

Perhaps Diaz is looking to get an advantage on the larger Bisping by forcing him to cut an unusually large amount of weight, but it is a curious suggestion given that ‘The Count’ is finally the UFC middleweight champion and that appears to be what everyone is chasing him for.

The older Diaz brother will be eligible to return from his marijuana-based NSAC suspension this August, and it’s no secret that some big fights will await him despite the fact that he hasn’t won a UFC fight since 2011 – yes, 2011. Just don’t count Michael Bisping as one of them, because with a full queue of competitors chomping at the bit to get a chance at his 185-pound title, it’s almost impossible to see ‘The Count’ even considering a drop down to 178 pounds.

Stranger things have happened, I guess.

Chris Weidman Willing To Fight ‘Whoever Wants It’ At MSG

Former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman is still hoping to receive a shot at the title upon his return from injury, but he isn’t too confident that he’ll be granted his wish. Weidman was slated to rematch Luke Rockhold for the title earlier this month at UFC 199, but he was forced to withdraw from the bout, leading Michael Bisping to step up on short notice and knock out Rockhold to become the champion.

Weidman, a Long Island native, has called out Bisping multiple times for a fight at UFC 205 on November 12, 2016 which will mark the UFC’s inaugural trip to New York at the famed Madison Square Garden.

Bisping, however, has seemed more interested in getting revenge on No. 13-ranked Dan Henderson, or perhaps facing off with returning former long-time welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre. At this point, Weidman isn’t going to ‘cry’ about it, but he did confirm that he will be willing to fight anyone as he long as he gets his spot on the MSG card:

“I’ll be at Madison Square Garden waiting for whoever wants it. Bisping doesn’t want it. You know, it was my title shot and he had the opportunity because of me. Now he’s trying to fight the thirteenth ranked guy in the division. It’s good for him. Good for him, man. Fight anybody you want. He’s trying to get a ‘W’ under his belt. Hey, if he can make it happen, good for him. I’m not going to cry about it, honestly.” Weidman told MMAJunkie.

If Weidman isn’t given a shot at Bisping, who would you like to see him face off with in New York? Perhaps a rematch with Rockhold would make sense, although divisional supremacy wouldn’t be on the line this time. Fellow top contender Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza could also present a formidable challenge for Weidman, and the Brazilian should be returning from injury around the November time frame.

UFC middleweight champion Michael Bisping capitalized on the opportunity to take Chris Weidman’s place in the title fight with Luke Rockhold at UFC 199, doing so on just two weeks notice. Many believed Luke Rockhold would retain his belt, especially given the dominant win he held over ‘The Count’ in their first fight, but the Englishman made good on his promises to finish ‘Rocky’ on June 4. A flurry of clean punches to the chin cleaned out Rockhold in the first round, and Bisping had finally captured a title after 10 years of hard work.

With the storming victory came a stream of challenges from a line of contenders. Jacare Souza, Dan Henderson, Rockhold, Chris Weidman and even Georges St-Pierre wanted a crack. ‘GSP’ claimed a return fight with Bisping was ‘close,’ Henderson and ‘The Count engaged in an all new war of words that has fans clamouring for a rematch of their classic UFC 100 meeting. ‘Hendo’ scored an iconic knockout over Bisping that night and it seems somewhat fitting to have Henderson retire after a rematch, although the rankings would argue otherwise.

But through all of this the former champ and number one contender Chris Weidman hasn’t really had his name thrown in the mix all that much. ‘The All American’ pulled out of the UFC 199 main event after a neck injury, later undergoing successful surgery to fix the issue. Now he’s clearly trying to drum up some hype for the most realist fight that’s been suggested since Bisping took over the division.

It’s certainly a strange spot for the 185-pound division to be in right now. The unfinished business with a soon to be retired Henderson could well overshadow the official rankings in this scenario, and leave matchmakers with a tall task regarding the rest of the middleweight contenders. Should ‘Hendo’ have to fight his way back up or just retire, or does his epic KO over Bisping hold enough weight to have the ageing legend skip the queue?

The former champion Chris Weidman could fight Luke Rockhold in the meantime, but what would Jacare do? Throw in St-Pierre, who’s never even fought at middleweight, and you have an even more entertaining but also troublesome mix.

The only man smiling here is Bisping, who apparently hasn’t changed a bit.

Dan Henderson: It’s Going To Be Funny Beating Bisping’s A** Again

It’s crazy to think that it was seven years ago, at UFC 100, when Dan Henderson planted his legendary right hand to the chin of Michael Bisping to create an iconic moment in mixed martial arts history. The two bitter rivals had served as opposing coaches during a season of The Ultimate Fighter, and rather typically for ‘The Count,’ he’d got under the skin of his American nemesis. The resulting KO win for ‘Hendo’ is quite possibly the most replayed moment highlight reel finish in the sport.

How things have changed since that day; Bisping after smashing Luke Rockhold in their rematch at UFC 199, is now the middleweight champion of the world. Henderson, although also victorious by way of comeback knockout over Hector Lombard on the same June 4 pay-per-view, is now eyeing retirement in the near future. Currently ranked number 13 in the 185-pound division, the 45-year old American hero may well get the opportunity to leap the rankings for a repeat showdown with Bisping given recent events.

Michael Bisping has steadily ramped up the trash talk since winning the belt, with many top contenders appealing for a fight with the newly crowned boss of the division. Not surprisingly the fans only want to see one fight for Bisping’s first defense, and it sounds as though bot the champion and Dan Henderson are on board for this epic rematch.

Bisping recently blasted Henderson as a ‘cheating old piece of sh*t,’ claiming he’d love to ‘put him in the grave’ and get revenge for that harrowing knockout at UFC 100. The highly decorated wrestler, former two-weight Pride FC champion and MMA legend Henderson has responded during this TMZ interview, as transcribed by MMAMania.com:

usa-today-8600667.0[1]

“I’ve never really paid much attention to what he says, it’s entertaining to me. It’d be pretty funny when he just yaps his mouth again and ends up getting his ass beat by an old man.”

“Over the years since I had fought him I really didn’t have a reason to fight him again,” added Henderson. “I couldn’t have knocked him out better the first time around, so he’s going to owe me two after we fight.”

For some reason, even with the glaringly obvious argument of the rankings in play, this fight has a nostalgic feel that just cannot be ignored. Perhaps it’s the festive feel us MMA fans get around the anniversary of UFC 100 and on the eve of UFC 200 month, or maybe we are just so intrigued to see if Henderson can finally win UFC gold.

Either way, as you’ll see in the interview with Hendo, it sounds as though the promotion are keen on making the fight happen.

Former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman will be cornering welterweight Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson in his main event clash with Rory MacDonald tonight (June 18, 2016), and also took some time to attend a Q&A session with fans yesterday.

Weidman was asked on his thoughts on Michael Bisping winning the 185-pound title from Luke Rockhold, the man who beat Weidman for the strap last December, at UFC 199 earlier this month:

BispingCelebratesRockholdKO“I guess it’s something I gotta get used to, for at least a little bit,” Weidman said Friday (Courtesy of FOX Sports) “It’s just a reality that has happened, because of me, because I got injured.

“He should be kissing my feet right now, instead he’s not saying my name. It’s a smart move.

“His thing is to definitely try to keep that belt as long as he possibly can and he doesn’t want to look at me. And I understand that, good for him, he’s smart.”

‘The All American’ was then asked how he felt about Dan Henderson possibly getting the first title shot at Michael Bisping, given the men’s history with one another:

“You have to realize, you start doing these kind of things in the division, where does it send the division? What is the point of working your way into the top 5? What’s the point? I understand what people want to see. If that’s what people want to see, that’s probably what’s going to happen.

“At the end of the day I love Henderson just like anybody else does. I mean, he’s 46 years old and he’s getting a knockout in his last fight — he’s probably one of my favorite fighters in the UFC.

“But at the end of the day, he’s in my weight class and like I said, I need that belt.

“He’s ranked 13th and I’m ranked No. 2, and I’m the closest guy to Bisping that he hasn’t fought … he’s over in Manchester celebrating right now. He wants to hold that belt for as many months as possible.”

While it was no secret Rockhold became a lot more vocal after beating Weidman for the belt at UFC 194, Weidman was asked how satisfying it was to see the now-former champ eat a slice of humble pie:

“I was about a five,” Weidman said. “It was bittersweet. It was nice to see Rockhold get humbled a little bit.

“On the other side, I wanted to be the guy to do that. And even afterward I was kind of happy for Bisping. The guy had an opportunity — again, thanks to me — and he made the most of it.

“Rockhold is definitely a bigger d*****bag than Bisping, and Bisping is a pretty big d*****bag.”

UFC Fight Night 89 is live from the TD Place Arena in Ottawa, Canada, live on FS1 tonight (June 18, 2016).
