There have been a plethora of fighters in the UFC, but some fighters have had fighting styles so unique that they will be remembered forever.

Many of these bizarre styles came from the early days of the UFC in which the competitors represented only one discipline. Such strange styles as Pencak Silat, Trap fighting and hand-to-hand in all their oddity were covered in a previous article on the subject.

However, what about after MMA fighters started to become well rounded, and singular, one-dimensional martial arts techniques began to disappear? Which fighters had the strangest styles, then?

UFC 140: Does Lyoto Machida Really Deserve a Title Shot vs. Jon Jones?

We all know the light heavyweight division is very talented, yet very muddy with the contenders within the division.  Everyone is aiming to climb the ladder to get to Jon “Bones” Jones, the UFC’s reigning, defending champion.  The issue that seems to be coming up is that there’s no clear road to a title shot in the division.

Imagine this.  You are 1-2 in your last three fights.  You lost one via a brutal knockout in the first round and another to a split decision.  The one fight you did win was against a 48-year-old man.  After this, not only are you not cut, but you get a title shot.

That’s life for Lyoto Machida.

I’m sure I know what you’re saying.  “You think Machida should be cut?”  No, of course not.  However, I’m just not sure if he should get a shot based on his last few fights.  In most cases, the challenger to a title comes into the fight hot, on a win streak.  In this fight Machida comes in with the momentum of a tortoise.

Machida was just chosen out of default.  UFC wants Jones to fight again, but everyone is either hurt or scheduled to fight already.  Jones can’t fight Dan Henderson because he’s fighting Mauricio “Shogun” Rua, whom Jones beat for the belt.  Jones can’t fight Thiago Silva because he’s on suspension.  Jones also can’t fight fellow phenom Phil Davis because of Davis’ knee problems.

The only solution was either Machida or wait for Rashad Evans‘ thumb to heal.

Had the decision been left to the majority of people, they probably would’ve talked to Evans to see how long it would take for a 100 percent recovery of the thumb and hopefully just wait until then instead of giving an undeserving title shot.

Let me know your thoughts.

UFC 140: Jon Jones Says He Is "Up to the Challenge" of Defeating Lyoto Machida

While Jon Jones’ recent performances have left fans in awe of his dominance, the 24-year-old has never had a tougher challenge in front of him than Lyoto Machida. Jones is expected to defend the title against the Brazilian at UFC 140 in December.

Machida previously held the light heavyweight title in 2009, when he was seen as an unbeatable champion. However, fast forward two years later and Machida will now challenge for the title. While the elusive Machida does pose as a legitimate challenge, Jones feels like he has “The Dragon” figured out.

In an interview with TheFightNetwork.com, Jones spoke about the opportunity to face the former champion and said he is confident in his abilities to hand Machida the third loss in his career.

“We feel comfortable, we feel as if there’s been some blueprints laid out,” Jones said.

After Machida suffered back-to-back losses to Mauricio “Shogun” Rua and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, Jones’ blueprint could not be any clearer. Although Jones intends on looking at Machida’s recent losses, he won’t necessarily rely entirely on their respective strategies.

The champion recognizes that Machida no longer carries the same mystique as before, but he does see the same qualities in him that made him champion just a short time ago. Regardless, Jones is willing to to accept the bout.

“We’re excited. We’re up for the challenge,” Jones said.

Psst! Mr. Machida. Come here. Listen carefully.

Here are five things you might consider before you step into the cage with Jon “Bones” Jones at UFC 140 on December 10.

Think of them as a five-step plan—five ways to move up from your current fifth ranking to (possibly) become Light Heavyweight champ.

There are no guarantees, of course, and you know full well just how difficult putting away Jones will be.  But if you’re clever, patient, and thoughtful, you could pull off a stunning upset.

And it’s not all about muscle and strength: Your state of mind and memory will play an important role, too.

These are five ways you might—just might—take that belt from the redoubtable Mr. Jones.

If you’re not extremely excited for Jon Jones versus Lyoto Machida at UFC 140, you’re either wildly confused or you’re new to the sport of MMA.

Jones and Machida are both very successful fighters. With Jones’ highly unpredictable striking and Machida’s unique defensive fighting style, it’ll be an interesting tactical battle.

Many people will have Machida as the underdog going into this fight, but he actually stands a very good chance of winning.

Many of us MMA fans can suffer from having very short-term memory. Not long ago, Machida was an undefeated light heavyweight champion and we were all caught up, and warned to be in a prolonged “Machida Era.”

Machida needs to come out strong against Jones; doing so will give him a very good chance of throwing Jones off of his game plan.

Everyone expects Machida to use his speed and karate to fight a defensive battle against Jones. That’s the way Machida fights, and it’s been mostly successful.

However, one of Jones’ biggest strengths as a fighter is his ability to create a game plan for each of his opponents and stick to it. If Machida comes out and does the unexpected, it’ll be something Jones isn’t expecting.

Machida has the skills to fight an aggressive battle in this bout. It wouldn’t be the first time a fighter has come out and fought the fight no one expected.

No matter what happens in their title match at UFC 140, us fans will win. But if “The Dragon” comes out looking for the kill, he stands a great chance of upsetting Jones.

Here We Go Again: Steven Seagal Volunteers to Help Secure Texas-Mexico Borders

(“The Glimmer Man” trying to pretend that he knows what the f*ck his new boss is talking about)

Well, Steven Seagal finally fooled someone into taking him up on his offer of unsolicited help.

The 59-year-old actor, who claims he was a CIA operative in the 80s and whose most recent stint as a peace officer, which was documented on his A&E reality television series Steven Seagal: Lawman, ended abruptly when he was charged with sexual harassment of his female assistant, was sworn in this week as the Hudspeth County Sheriff’s Office’s newest deputy. Officials with the department say that his primary focus will be working full time to help secure the U.S.-Mexico border in Texas.

Seagal contacted Sheriff Arvin West two months ago to apply for work with the HCSO and according to him, he feels that his intentions were honorable.

“It became very clear to me that Mr. Seagal is not in this for the celebrity or the publicity,” Sheriff Arvin West told the San Antonio Express today. “He’s like the rest of us that live down here; he has a sincere passion for his country and he wants to do more to help. The television aspect of what we’re doing here is the last priority. The man has a pure motive in doing this. He knows what we’re up against here and he wants to help.”

Seagal was sworn in as the “deputy chief to the chief deputy,” a position that was created for the 7th Dan in Akido, who claims to have taught “his sons”  UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva and Lyoto Machida a few of the deadly techniques of the martial art. On Monday, he did a dry run as a border patrol agent and will apparently start his new gig, which incidentally pays $15-per-hour, some time in 2012.

“He got really a taste of what we go through down here,” department spokesman Gary Fleming said. “We ran about 50 miles of the border and Deputy Seagal got a chance to meet the community and where he’s going to be working.”
