A decorated former UFC champion is reportedly returning to the octagon this fall.

After serving an 18-month United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) suspension for using the prohibited substance 7-Keto due to it including DHEA, former UFC light heavyweight champion Lyoto “The Dragon” Machida will return to action against No. 7 Derek Brunson at October 28’s UFC Fight Night 119 from Ibirapuera Gymnasium in Sao Paulo, Brazil, according to a report from Combate (via MMA Mania).Machida was last seen

Machida was last seen losing his previous bout to recent interim title contender Yoel Romero via vicious second-round stoppage at June 2015’s UFC Fight Night 70. The loss marked his second in a row after he was brutally submitted by Luke Rockhold in April 2015. Machida was then set to take on MMA legend Dan Henderson in a rematch of their UFC 157 snoozer at UFC on FOX 16 in April 2016, but his admittance to using 7-Keto forced the bout to be canceled.

Despite the recent downswing against the absolute top of the talented UFC middleweight division, Machida maintains a 22-9 record in MMA with nine of those wins coming by knockout.

He’ll meet another contender looking to fight his way up the ranks in Brunson, a pressuring knockout artist who recently got back on track with a massive knockout of the previously surging Daniel Kelly at this June’s UFC Fight Night 110. Prior to that, Brunson dropped a highly controversial decision to all-time legend Anderson Silva at February’s UFC 208 after getting knocked out by current interim champ Robert Whittaker last November.

UFC Fight Night 119 also features a pivotal light heavyweight bout between Glover Teixeira and Misha Cirkunov, both fighters in need of a big win after recent losses.

That Time Jon Jones Choked His Opponent Unconscious and Left Him for Dead

Jon Jones is an amazing fighter at basically every level, but the one knock on him is he lacks the pure stopping power of many of his contemporaries. There’s a bit of truth to that, sure, but to say Jones can’t finish opponents is somewhat silly.

Jon Jones is an amazing fighter at basically every level, but the one knock on him is he lacks the pure stopping power of many of his contemporaries. There’s a bit of truth to that, sure, but to say Jones can’t finish opponents is somewhat silly.

Case in point? His 2011 victory over Lyoto Machida. Relive that fight here:

After dropping Machida with a superman punch, Jones locked in a front headlock and started working for a guillotine. While Machida got back to his feet, the taller Jones kept hold of his neck, adjusted his grip and tightened it up well past the point of escape. The referee stepped in, and Jones relinquished the hold but, in doing so, let a lifeless Machida drop to the canvas in a heap.

Eighteen months prior, Machida was the UFC light heavyweight champion and seemed all but unstoppable with a unique, inimitable fighting style. Jones still strangled the life out of him and discarded his body with a chilling indifference.

Jones will look to imitate that performance at UFC 214 on Saturday, with Daniel Cormier playing the role of Machida. If he can pull off something similar, it would go down as the greatest victory of his career.

Lyoto Machida won’t let his current situation with the UFC allow the sport to evolve past him.

‘The Dragon’ was recently flagged by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) after admitting to taking supplements with 7-keto-DHEA. Now the former light heavyweight champ is being suspended for 18 months as a result.

Machida recently joined ex-UFC heavyweight Brendan Schaub on The Fighter And The Kid podcast’s ‘Big Brown Breakdown’ edition (quotes courtesy of Bloody Elbow), and stated that he continues to evolve with the sport despite being unable to compete inside the Octagon against today’s elite competition:

“It’s very hard because the sport evolves so fast, changes so fast,” Machida said. “So, you have to be there to see the changes that are happening in the moment. That’s why I keep training everyday, I try to mix myself in all of the academies. I try to go to Kings MMA with Master Rafael Cordeiro, do some sparring over there, train over there with a bunch of fighters from the UFC and Bellator.”

“I’m very happy to have this opportunity to fight in October (when the suspension lapses). I think at the end of the day, it’s gonna be good for me.”

The only fight Machida believes is the best option upon his return is a bout with 185-pound champion Michael Bisping. Other than that ‘The Dragon’ is reluctant to follow the masses and call out a big name as a ploy to get more money:

“It’s not my style,” Machida said. “I’m not gonna change my principles, I’m not gonna change anything just to make money. I’ll stay like (how) Lyoto Machida always was and do my stuff, do a great fight, and try to do some fights through my technique. I don’t want to change my style.”

Who would you like to see Machida throw down with upon his return? You can check out his interview with Schaub on ‘The Big Brown Breakdown’ here:
