While New Yorkers and former champions Jon Jones and Chris Weidman will likely lobby to fight in their native state, there’s also the possibility of the promotion booking their biggest star, featherweight champion Conor McGregor, for their first trip to the Empire State.

In fact, the brash Irish champion may have an opponent tailor made for him if he were to fight in New York.

Former 155-pound kingpin Frankie “The Answer” Edgar has won five in a row including three by way of stoppage, putting him near the forefront of the 145-pound title race. He also happens to be a New Jersey native with a strong New York following, and an obvious hope of one day fighting at MSG.

Recently speaking on the possibility, Owen Roddy, McGregor’s striking coach, said a bout between the “Notorious” one and “The Answer” in New York would be ‘amazing’ (Via Sky Sports):

“That would be amazing, realistically that would be huge for the first New York show. Madison Square Garden would be fantastic.”

“[McGregor and Edgar could fight] at featherweight or even at lightweight—Frankie spends a lot of time there, and he was the lightweight champion. But if Conor is on the card, it would be huge anywhere.”

McGregor is expected to rematch Nate Diaz at July 9’s UFC 200, but the UFC isn’t planning to head to New York until next fall, making the timing for a bout between McGregor and Edgar seem just right.

Big news came earlier this week, as New York finally became the fiftieth state to legalize mixed martial arts (MMA).

A plethora of fighters were happy to hear of the legalization, but perhaps none more than former UFC middleweight champion Chris Weidman, a Long Island native who has long pushed for the ability to fight in his home state.

Currently scheduled to rematch 185-pound boss Luke Rockhold at June’s UFC 199, Weidman recently said that the legalization of the sport in NY has made him even more ‘excited’ to reclaim his title in hopes of one day defending it at the infamous Madison Square Garden:

“The vision gets even stronger now. I had to get my belt back, but now just the fact that I’m going to get to defend my belt in Madison Square Garden in front of all of New York is crazy to even start to think about,” Weidman said during a recent conference call. “It definitely gets me more excited.”

The promotion has been attempting to legalize MMA in the Empire State for years now, and “The All-American” claims that it’s now a dream come true not only for himself, but for the passionate legion of New York fans:

“Speaking for myself I’ve been fighting for seven years, and I’ve been missing out on opportunities to fight in front of my family, friends, fans here in New York. Every year you’re just hopeful and it finally happened, so it’s a dream come true for me,” he said. “It’s a dream come true for all these New York fans that don’t have to worry about buying these tickets to Las Vegas to watch New York fighters get in there or take long car rides to New Jersey.”

As far as what the reaction has been, Weidman admits that it’s been nothing but excitement regarding a move that was a long time coming:

“Everyone is so excited. [Whether] guys were just doing MMA for fun or exercise or competing at the pro level, everyone is just so excited,” he said. “Living in New York having to explain to people who aren’t educated on the sport why it’s illegal is just something that you get kind of sick of doing all the time. Now that’s it’s a legit sport in New York and there’s no more explaining to do, it’s a huge relief for everybody.”

Do you foresee Weidman getting the better of Rockhold when the two meet for a second time?

At 2 p.m. ET today, the UFC will hold a press conference at New York’s Madison Square Garden to formally announce their intent to bring MMA to the Big Apple as soon as possible. In attendance will be UFC president Dana White, Zuffa co-owner Lorenzo Fertitta, lightweight champion Frankie Edgar, light-heavyweight contender Rashad Evans, and Madison Square Garden Sports president Scott O’Neill.

A new economic impact study is scheduled to be released in the hopes that New York will join the 44 other U.S. states that currently regulate the sport — even though cash doesn’t seem to be a big motivator among MMA’s stubborn critics.

Despite our long history of promoting the "MMA in NY" cause, CagePotato has unfortunately been barred from attending the event due to the whole Arianny Celeste Playboy leak fiasco. Their loss. When the first media question is from some spaz asking if he can sit in Dana’s lap, they’re gonna wish they had some real freakin’ journalists in the building…
