Another day, another fighter flagged for a potential violation of the UFC’s new and increased drug testing program led by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA).

Word came tonight (Fri., April 8, 2015) that two-time former UFC heavyweight Frank Mir was notified of a potential anti-doping violation stemming from his knockout loss to Mark Hunt i the main event of UFC Fight Night 85 on March 20, 2016 from Brisbane, Australia.

The UFC released the following statement via its website:

The UFC organization was notified today that the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) has informed Frank Mir of a potential Anti-Doping Policy violation stemming from an in-competition sample collected the day of his fight on March 20, 2016 in Brisbane, Australia.

USADA, the independent administrator of the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, will handle the results management and appropriate adjudication of this case involving Mir. It is important to note that, under the UFC Anti-Doping Policy, there is a full and fair legal process that is afforded to all athletes before any sanctions are imposed.

Additional information will be provided at the appropriate time as the process moves forward.

Exactly which banned substance Mir potentially tested positive for has not been made public at this time. He will of course have an opportunity to appeal the violation and any subsequent punishment.

If he does receive a lengthy suspension, however, it could spell the end of an extremely decorated run for Mir, who has lost six out of his last eight UFC fights after ‘The Super Samoan’ knocked him out in the first round in Brisbane. Mir had previously lost four straight in early 2014, but rebounded after a yearlong layoff to top Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva and Todd Duffee to resurrect his career.

Two consecutive losses and the potential violation have seemingly put at least a temporary halt to that. If Mir does indeed decide to hang up his gloves, he’ll retire as arguably the most decorated heavyweight in UFC history, owning the division records for most wins, most fights, and most finishes.

Popular UFC heavyweight Mark Hunt has been there and done it in the combat sports world. From winning the K-1 Grand Prix, fighting and beating some top names in the Pride FC years, and joining the UFC to score some huge wins against all the odds, ‘The Super Samoan’ has one punched his way in to our hearts and minds. Unlike during his spectacular trademark finishes, Hunt has refused to walk away from the sport, even after being offered $450,000 by UFC president Dana White to retire before his first fight for the promotion.

His humble attitude and extremely likeable character sees ‘Hunto’ rise in popularity consistently, and his victories in the UFC octagon speak for themselves. Stunning knockout wins over Stefan Struve, Cheick Kongo, Roy Nelson, Frank Mir, Chris Tuchscherer and Bigfoot Silva have seen the fan friendly heavyweight come close to a title shot, but he is yet to reach that goal. But things haven’t always been this good for ‘The Super Samoan,’ as you’ll find out during this harrowing tale.

Mark-Hunt-1200

To the viewer it may have looked as though it was all gravy for Mark Hunt during his time in Pride FC, especially during his win streak that saw victories over Mirko Cro Cop and Wanderlei Silva. As it often happens, things weren’t all that great for Hunt at the time, as he discloses in his new book available on Amazon ‘Mark Hunt Born To Fight.’ Props to the Reddit forums for the quotes:

Mark Hunt vs. Fedor Emelianenko, 2006:

Fedor%20&%20Hunt[1]

I was getting a little run together in Pride, feeling like myself again. I was regaining faith in my hands and my ability to drop whomever they put in front of me.

Unbeknown to me, when I’d fought Mirko I was in a title eliminator. Whoever took that fight was to be fighting Fedor for the Pride belt. After the Nishijima fight I was called to a hotel suite, and when I saw the Russian champ coming out of the room as I was about to go in, I started to glean what was going on. I had a little chit-chat with Fedor in the hallway and asked him what they had for me.

He shrugged and said, ‘They had this for me,’ nodding to his bag.

When I got into the room I found Sakakibara-san, a few guys who looked like muscle and a Korean guy who acted like he was in charge. Also in the room was a table struggling under the weight of many giant piles of crisp currency, stacked neatly.

‘How are you, Mark?’ Sakakibara-san asked.

‘I’d be doing better if I had some of that,’ I said, pointing to the table.

‘Do you want some? Would you like us to pay you in cash? We can if you like, Mark.’

No shit. They could have paid me for my next ten fights and it wouldn’t have made a dent in that pile. I declined, though. The Russians all liked to be paid in cash but I figured it would be a pain trying to explain to Aussie Customs why I was bringing a big bag of foreign currency home.

In that hotel room I got a little preview of the future downfall of Pride, but at the time I didn’t concern myself with any of the organisation’s shady, behind-the-scenes dealings. I only concerned myself with the guy in front of me, and in that hotel suite they told me that soon the guy in front of me was going to be exactly the right bloke – the world’s biggest badass. Well, second biggest anyway…

Frank Mir accepts the fact that his fight against Mark Hunt at UFC Fight Night 85 in Brisbane, Australia was stopped when it was.

The former UFC Heavyweight Champion said the following on the Phone Booth Fighting podcast when talking about whether or not referee Marc Goddard made the right call to stop the fight when Mir was floored by the big shot from Hunt, which ended up being the heavyweight slugger’s latest “walk off knockout.”

“Yes, it was a good stoppage,” Mir said. “My lights were on, but I had no bearings on where anything was coming from. So the effectiveness of me being able to defend myself was very low at that point.”

Mir claimed the first person he saw after he was hit by the shot was referee Marc Goddard, admitting that he didn’t even know where Hunt was at first.

“It shows you show disorientated I was by the shot — the guy fully dressed was the one who caught my attention,” Mir said. … “It could have been bad [if the fight continued]. I see the reason for stopping it. At that point, intelligently defending myself, it would have been a scramble to find out where Mark was coming from.”

Mir, who has been hit by some of the biggest names in the history of the sport, claims Hunt’s shot was the hardest punch he’s ever been hit by in his career.

“By far the hardest punch I’ve ever received in my career,” Mir said. “Immediately, I felt like I was under water. The lights were on, but for a good 10 to 15 seconds the room spun.”

Mark Hunt Wants A Big Fight Against Top Five Opponent

After scoring back to back first round knockout victories over the likes of Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva and Frank Mir, legendary heavyweight striker Mark “The Super Samoan” Hunt has his eyes set on a big time fight:

“Any of them is fine,” Hunt said Monday on The MMA Hour. “Any of the top-five guys would be fine.”

Despite being 41 years of age, Hunt proved that he still has some pop left in his hands, scoring another of his patented walk off knockouts just last week (March 19, 2016) over the former champion in Mir.

The heavyweight division is almost completely booked up at this time in terms of top contenders which could be a problem for Hunt, as “The Super Samoan” is looking to get right back into the thick of things.

Perhaps a marquee matchup at this summer’s UFC 200 would fit the bill, but Hunt also said that he’d be ready to step in on short notice if any heavyweight bouts were to fall apart:

“If someone pulls out, I’d rather fight sooner,” Hunt said. “So if someone pulls out, I’m your man. Give me a call.”

Despite his recent run of success over the last few years inside of the Octagon, Hunt has suffered a few crucial defeats, all coming at the hands of some of the best heavyweights in the world including reigning champion Fabricio Werdum, current title challenger Stipe Miocic, and former divisional kingpin Junior dos Santos.

“The Super Samoan” has never lost in a rematch, and would happily accept a bout with any of those men. In fact, he even admitted that his loss to Miocic taught him a dire lesson regarding fight preparation:

“I want my rematch with those guys,” Hunt said. “That fight with Stipe taught me a big lesson there, never to be so much over weight before the fight. It was a problem. So I won’t be doing that again.”

Who would you like to see the heavy handed Hunt take on next?

Michael Bisping Lays Out Path To Title For Mark Hunt

Fresh off a first round stoppage victory over Frank Mir, Mark Hunt is back on the right course towards the UFC heavyweight title.

While Hunt mentioned possible rematches as his first priority, he also realizes those kind of fights will get him closer to a shot at the champion, who is currently Fabricio Werdum.

During Wednesday night’s edition of “UFC Tonight,” guest host Michael Bisping laid out plans for Hunt moving forward.

“I’d like to see him take on the winner of Alistair Overeem vs. Andrei Arlovski,” Bisping said. “Then face the winner of Cain Velasquez vs. Travis Browne.

“If he wins that, he’s gets a shot at the gold.”

Hunt (12-10-1) has now won two straight, adding the Mir victory to his November first round finish vs. Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva. His two prior losses to those wins came vs. Werdum and the No. 1 contender, Stipe Miocic. Those two meet later this year.
