Handing Danish Olympian, Mark O. Madsen his first loss in professional mixed martial arts, surging lightweight contender, Grant Dawson has likely cracked the division top-15 despite his weight miss, scoring a dominant third round rear-naked choke win to open the main card of UFC Vegas 64.
Dawson, who missed the lightweight non-title limit by one and a half pounds for tonight’s high-stakes clash with the undefeated, Madsen, managed to dominant the wrestling exchanges with the Greco-Roman wrestler, working his way to the former’s back on cue in the opening couple of rounds.
Chopping away at Madsen’s left leg in the third and final frame, Dawson followed the Dane to the canvas, eventually working to set up a rear-naked choke and force a stoppage from referee, Herb Dean.
Following the victory, Dawson called for a fight against the faltering former interim UFC lightweight titleholder, Tony Ferguson in his next Octagon appearance.
Below, catch the highlights from Grant Dawson’s impressive win over Mark O. Madsen

Undefeated UFC lightweight and former Olympic wrestler Mark O. Madsen has reacted to parallels being drawn between him and former UFC 155lb champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov.
The reasons for the comparisons to Khabib Nurmagomedov are clear. Mark O. Madsen is an elite wrestler, with a storied career outside the UFC. He is still undefeated and competes at 155lbs – Khabib’s old stomping ground.
Admittedly, Madsen is yet to test himself against the top 15 of the division, but the Dane is making his way up towards the rankings. Having already picked up wins over Clay Guida, Vinc Pichel, Danilo Belluardo and Austin Hubbard, Madsen will now square off against Drakkar Klose, on the undercard of UFC Fight Night: Kattar vs. Allen.
However, in a recent interview with LowKickMMA, Madsen stated that whilst flattered by the comparisons to Khabib, his focus is on carving out his own legacy, rather than replicating that of a fellow fighter. When asked his thoughts on the matter, ‘The Olympian’ had the following to say:
“I’m gonna be the only Mark O. Madsen in the UFC. I do take it as a compliment, being compared to Khabib. Khabib is, in my book – he’s the GOAT. Amazing fighter, coming from a wrestling background. The things he’s done in the sport is amazing. I respect Khabib, I respect his team. So let’s put that aside. I’m gonna be the next Mark O. Madsen. I’m gonna be the only Mark O. Madsen in the UFC.”
Mark O. Madsen on the rise of MMA in Denmark
MMA has taken slightly longer to be accepted in Europe compared to how it has been received in America, but with the recent legalization of the sport in France, as well as the surge of European talent that has emerged over the past few years, MMA is quickly becoming a mainstream sport.
Mark O. Madsen’s home country of Denmark is a perfect example of this. Whilst MMA was once a niche sport that had an extremely following, fighters like Madsen have helped popularise it. He had the following to say on the topic:
“Well, I’m proud of being a frontrunner, in some sense. I mean, we have a lot of amazing Danish fighters, fighting in the UFC, fighting in Bellator. MMA in Denmark has been growing over the years and it’s always fun to be part of something successful. Something that is growing, something that is developing into – let’s call it ‘more mainstream.’ MMA in Denmark has been a little niche for a long while, but it’s becoming more mainstream now, which is a very cool thing to be a part of.”

Undefeated UFC lightweight Mark O. Madsen has given his take on the upcoming 155lb title fight between Charles Oliveira and Islam Makhachev at UFC 280.
Mark O. Madsen is currently set to take on Drakkar Klose at UFC Fight Night: Kattar vs. Allen. Following Klose’s victory over Brandon Jenkins at UFC on ESPN 34, he took to the mic, calling ‘The Olympian’ out. Now Klose has the fight he wanted, although Madsen clearly believes that his now upcoming opponent has bitten off far more than he can chew, having vowed to retire Klose.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with LowKickMMA, in partnership with VegasInsider, Mark O. Madsen had the following to say about his opponent.
“I definitely think Drakkar Klose should have called someone else out. The thing is with callouts – it’s a funny thing, because the mental aspect in it is one guy is calling another guy out, because he thinks he’s better than the other fighter. Me personally, I love callouts, because that triggers something inside me. That puts a little extra in there. I think Drakkar made a mistake and I’m gonna prove that on October 29th. I’m gonna go out there and I’m gonna knock his head out, and retire this guy. Quite simple.”
Mark O. Madsen gives his prediction for Charles Oliveira vs. Islam Makhachev
Should Madsen defeat Klose, he will likely be on the fringes of the top 15 of the lightweight division. 155lbs has been a marquee weight class for some time now, and at UFC 280, a new champion will be decided.
Former title holder Charles Oliveira will take on Islam Makhachev in one of the most anticipated bouts of the year. Madsen was confident in his assessment of who would come out on top in this eclectic title fight. He stated:
“I see Islam Makhachev as the new UFC champ. One hundred percent. I saw Michael Chandler say online that Islam – I think he said he hadn’t earned it, or that he hadn’t fought anybody good. I think that’s bulls**t number one. Islam Makhachev, I even had the chance to train with him, he’s the real deal. I see him as the new UFC champion. And I think he’s gonna hold that belt for a while, to be honest.”

Former Olympian turned mixed martial artist Mark O. Madsen called out Paddy Pimblett following the Liverpudlian’s second-round submission of Jordan Leavitt at UFC London but instead got the attention of Drakkar Close.
Following Pimblett’s entertaining return to the O2 Arena, the Olympian attempted to capitalize on the moment, calling out ‘The Baddy’ on Twitter.
“Great performance by the Paddy the Fatty #UFCLondon Pick any date and I’m ready #weak #chin #weak #wrestling @AliAbdelaziz00”
Madsen’s tweet gained some attention, but it wasn’t from Paddy Pimblett. It was from fellow wrestler Drakkar Klose who questioned why Madsen was calling out Paddy Pimblett when Klose had called out ‘The Olympian’ twice with seemingly no response.
“Why you trying to fight a kid. I called you out twice but got [crickets]”
‘The Olympian’ Responds to Klose Following Callout of Paddy Pimblett
Madsen was quick to reply to Klose’s claim saying that he accepted the fight, but Klose opted to face Rafa Garcia at UFC 277 on Saturday.
“Why are you fighting Garcia. I accepted the fight @drakkarklose and you pulled out!”
“if you accepted the fight, where was the contract? I’m the one on the card. Next time make Denmark proud and don’t duck call-outs, be a man. #thatstwice”
Madsen again responded to Klose, inviting the Michigan native to stop by the gym anytime.
“You’re 5 min away. Stop by the gym anytime. Or are you too afraid of my coaches. @TinoDeFranco @allinmma @HenryCejudo @CPTdasAmericas
Madsen last appeared at UFC 273 in April. He defeated Vinc Pichel to earn his fourth straight win under the UFC banner and his 12th straight victory overall to remain undefeated in his mixed martial arts career. Madsen earned an Olympic silver medal at the 2016 Olympic Games in Beijing while competing in the Greco-Roman 75kg class.
