Markus Perez has taken a unique route since his UFC release.
The Brazilian was released from the UFC following a decision loss to Dalcha Lungiambula, which was his third in a row. Perez told the UFC to release him because he didn’t think he was ready for that level and wanted to get work on the regional scene as he was 2-5 in the UFC.
“I even think the UFC should fire me. I don’t think it’s right for a guy with two wins and five losses to stay hired, taking the opportunity from someone who’s fighting well. I don’t deserve to be in the UFC right now,” Perez said to AG Fight. “I don’t deserve it. They should let me go. I need to leave, solve my problems, win some fights so I can come back. That’s how I’ll be able to say I’m starting my life here (in the UFC). They haven’t talked to me, but I’m sure (I’ll be fired). I didn’t show them who I am.”
However, after getting his release, he lost his next fight to Zac Pagua at Cage Warriors. Yet, Perez got back into the win column back in December with a submission win. Next, instead of fighting in MMA again, he competed in pillow fights over the weekend and nearly fought his opponent.
After hitting each other with the pillow, Markus Perez’s opponent lost his pillow but Perez continued to hit him and even smiled at his opponent tauntingly. Shortly thereafter, his opponent would go at him and the two nearly threw down before being separated. However, as more people jumped into the ring, they continued to trash talk, even after being separated.
Whether or not Perez will do another pillow fight is uncertain, but it appears he is open to anything after his release.
What do you make of Markus Perez nearly fighting his opponent?

Perez, a seven-fight veteran of the UFC, saw his time with the organization come to an end back in February of last year after he was handed his release following a string of three consecutive losses.
Pillow Fighting Championships hosts it’s pay-per-view events on the Fite TV platform
The Sao Paulo native is a former LFA middleweight champion, and during his tenure with the UFC, established a 2-5 record, landing wins over both James Bochnovich, and Anthony Hernandez, while dropping losses against Eryk Anders, Andrew Sanchez, Wellington Turman, Dricus du Plessis, and Dalcha Lungiambula.
Before his move to the organization back in 2017, Perez defeated the trio of Paulo Thiago, Ildemar Alcantara, and won the aforenoted LFA title with a first round arm-triangle win over Ian Heinisch.
1-1 since his UFC departure following a loss to Lungiambula, Perez has competed for both Cage Warriors, and Thunder Fight, and featured at a Pillow Fighting Championships event over the weekend.
Perez, who gained recognition during his UFC tenure for sporting Joke-esque face makeup during ceremonial weigh-ins, competed at a Pillow Fighting Championships event in the ‘Sunshine State’ over the weekend, almost engaging in an actual fist-fight with his opponent, Reggie Newsome after the latter lost his pillow during an exchange.
Continuing to strike Newsome with his own pillow before the referee could intervene, Perez, who had then turned away from his opponent and begun laughing, was met with a push from Newsome, before the pair then clinched in the center of the ring.
With the official unable to pry the two apart, staff from Pillow Fighting Championships then entered the ring as Perez and Newsome continued to lock horns, eventually causing some separation between the two.
In the women’s Grand Prix at the Pillow Fighting Championships event, which consisted of eight participants, UFC strawweight and former ONE Championship feature, Istela Nunes managed to win the tournament and subsequently the $5,000 check. The Curitiba native made her UFC bow back in October suffering a loss against compatriot, Ariane Carnelossi.

Markus Perez expects Ben Askren to knock Jake Paul out. That’s despite sparring with the latter.
Askren makes his professional boxing debut when he takes on the popular YouTuber in a Triller headliner taking place this weekend at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia.
Most observers in the combat sports world believe it will be an easy win for Paul given Askren’s age and lack of striking ability. The same goes for UFC fighters who have sparred with Paul such as Jorge Masvidal and Mike Perry.
However, one former UFC fighter who sparred with Paul in Perez had a different viewpoint. The Brazilian revealed he was offered $300 to spar with Paul and he wasn’t that impressed with what he saw.
“He started the sparring going hard, and I hit him with a jab in the end of the first round and his nose started to bleed,” Perez told AgFight (via Sherdog). “From that point on we started to fight. I called for him to beat me up and he was afraid, just circling and staying out of my range. Of course, he is able to box and has a good cross, but he is clearly not a fighter — just an adventurous (type).
“Askren is a real fighter. He will close the distance and beat him up around the body and liver, just like I did. A fight is always a fight, anything can happen, but I believe he will knock Paul out around the second or third round.”
Based on these comments, is it fair to say Perez and Paul didn’t leave things off on the best of terms?
“They just gave me $150,” Perez added. “But in that regard, I have to support their attitude. I also wouldn’t pay $300 for someone who kicked my ass, the way I did with him.”

Former UFC middleweight fighter, Markus Perez, has detailed his recent sparring session with Jake Paul who is currently preparing to box Ben Askren on April 17.
Perez joined the UFC in 2017 and picked up two wins inside the Octagon. The 30-year-old was part of the latest rounds of cuts.
The end to his UFC career was not surprising when you consider he lost three fights consecutively.
Perez was most recently in action at UFC Fight Island 8, where he lost via unanimous decision against Dalcha Lungiambula.
During his three-fight skid Perez was also knocked out by Dricus Du Plessis and dropped a decision against Wellington Turman.
Since his UFC release Perez has been staying busy doing some boxing sparring with YouTube celebrity Jake Paul.
In an interview with AG Fight, Perez revealed exactly what went down when he stood across the ring from the 24-year-old.
“He’s young, he has two boxing matches, so he’s starting, you can’t see much and he hasn’t caught a tough guy yet,” Perez said. “I am not a boxer, I am kung fu, I like to kick and I train boxing for a short time with Gabriel de Oliveira, in the American Top Team. He will fight with a guy who is a grappler, he is not even a striker, but he has to see what the guy will take, his head as it will be.”
“From what I saw from our sparring, he will want to make a game of scoring,” Perez added. “I did it slowly, his coaches asked me not to accelerate and I didn’t even wear a helmet, he was wearing a ten-ounce glove and I was wearing a 16. He played with it, took a wave. It was very quiet. If it were a fight I would have gone for a walk.”
Paul is known for being a provocateur outside of the ring but it was Perez who managed to upset the YouTube with his antics during sparring.
“Actually, I was the one who provoked him. I laughed, took the wave, played,” Perez said. “He got mad at me and came to take my head off. I looked to the side because I was punching a lot. His corners got mad at me (laughs). If you put two provocateurs, we see who the leader is. He’s a youtuber and I’m a fighter. He’s coming now.”
Do you think sparring Markus Perez is good preparation for Jake Paul ahead of his fight with Ben Askren?

What a way to land in the Octagon. Decorated finisher, Dricus du Plessis gets a short-notice opportunity over former LFA middleweight best, Markus Perez – and scores a massive opening round knockout win.
The 26-year-old former KSW welterweight champion, and former EFC middleweight and welterweight gold holder faced some early adversity with an aggressive approach from Perez – with a notable body kick drawing the attention from du Plessis early in the opening frame.
Scoring a body kick of his own, the knockout and submission ace then capitalized with a massive almost shovel left hook, dropping the Brazilian before following up with ground-and-pound to enter the UFC with a bang. Following the win, the South African spoke with former welterweight title challenger, Dan Hardy – where he called out streaking contender, Kevin Holland next.
Below, check out the highlights from du Plessis’ stunning Octagon debut win over Perez.
