After a relatively short courting period that was really more formality than anything else, Jake Shields officially signed with the UFC on Monday.

Shields (25-4-1) was looking for a new promotion to call home after he couldn’t reach an agreement with Strikeforce. Over the past few months, all the speculation focused on not whether he would wind up in the UFC, but when.

In April, at the WEC 48 pay-per-view, Shields was shown on camera sitting next to UFC president Dana White, who mouthed the words, “He’s mine.” Shields was also a coach for Chuck Liddell on Season 11 of “The Ultimate Fighter,” which filmed earlier this year.

MMA Fighting reported last week that despite reports Shields had put ink to paper, the deal wasn’t signed just yet. Today, on his official Twitter account, Shields told the world he had signed a contract and confirmed, as MMA Fighting first reported last week, his first opponent will be Martin Kampmann at UFC 121 in Los Angeles on Oct. 30.

Jake Shields confirmed via his Twitter account today that he has officially signed with the UFC and said that he will indeed face Martin Kampmann in his Octagon debut at UFC 121, October 23 in his home state of California.

"UFC contract officially signed. Fighting Kampmann in CA in a few months. Thanks to @danawhite and everyone for their support," the former Strikeforce middleweight champion tweeted this afternoon.

It must add a certain amount of insult to injury for Strikeforce that the UFC is taking its sweet time signing Jake Shields. It’s almost like Dana White wants to remind Scott Coker (and everybody else) that the MMA world starts and stops at his convenience, not theirs. Yeah, just as soon as he rolls out of bed around 11 o’clock this morning, hits the gym, lunches at Delmonico’s, spends the requisite few minutes berating Marty Cordova and swings by Pinkberry for his snack, he might – if nothing else comes up – get around to locking down the excommunicated Strikeforce champ. Why be so leisurely about it? Because he can, motherfucker. Where else is Shields really going to go?

Despite reports this week from Shields’ own team that he’d finally slapped his John Hancock on one of the UFC’s notoriously draconian legal agreements, the company itself continues to deny it has formally come to terms with the Cesar Gracie Jiu Jitsu product. According to an MMA Fighting.com story published late Friday night however, Shields’ signing actually is looming and once it goes down, he could be looking at facing Martin Kampmann at welterweight in his promotional debut.

UFC President Dana White told MMA Fighting on Friday that Jake Shields has yet to officially sign with the UFC, but that doesn’t mean plans for Shields’ debut with the company aren’t moving forward.

So confident is the company that Shields will soon be in the fold that his first opponent has apparently been selected. Two sources close to the situation have told MMA Fighting that Shields will likely make his first foray into the octagon against welterweight contender Martin Kampmann.

Barring any unforeseen setbacks, Shields’ signing is expected to be finalized in the next several days as the UFC moves to populate upcoming events.

Paulo Thiago Concedes Poor Performance at UFC 115

You may or may not have been surprised by many of the outcomes at last weekend’s UFC;  we’re fans of Chuck Liddell,  but let’s face it, if you were really super-duper-shocked to see him get knocked out again, well, we’re guessing you make an X with your arms anytime you do something cool…

One of the more surprising performances on the card was Martin Kampmann’s UD win over Paulo Thiago, not necessarily because the Danish welterweight won, but how he won. Everyone should know that Kampmann’s no slouch on the ground, but really, to see him walk over a BJJ black belt like Thiago on the mat was pretty impressive no?

For Thiago, the loss was a definite setback, especially coming off his memorable ‘holy eff that was nice’ choke-out of Mike Swick in February. In a recent interview with the Brazilian publication Tatame, it sounds like Thiago is understandably disappointed with how things played out at UFC 115.

“I didn’t fought well at all, man. I couldn’t do it, I froze… I went forward on the beginning of the fight, but then I got stuck there. I don’t know what happened, but I couldn’t play my game and he won”, said Thiago. “I couldn’t make my game plan… Maybe I could have done better, but I didn’t. Now I have to study this fight, try to see my mistakes, improve my mental state and make it up with myself”.

It will be interesting to see who the UFC matches up against Thiago next and how he performs. As far as Kampmann, he reportedly wants a bout with Dan Hardy. Yes, that would be most satisfactory indeed.

Sunday afternoon I was sitting at my desk, staring at my computer screen in the hopes that words would magically appear on their own, and my dog barked right behind me. It was a bit startling, so I swiveled around expecting to see either a burglar or a rabbit in the house, and that’s when I banged my knee against what turned out to be a really solid desk drawer.

I won’t lie: it hurt. It hurt a lot. Naturally, I began swearing. A lot. Then I limped around my office for a minute or two, wondering out loud what I’d ever done to my dog or the universe to deserve this.

That’s when I remembered Rich Franklin’s performance at UFC 115.
