Alex Perez shocks Matheus Nicolau with vicious Second-Round knockout - UFC Vegas 91 Highlights

Alex Perez stormed back into the win column with a highlight-reel-worthy knockout of Matheus Nicolau in the UFC Vegas 91 headliner on Saturday night.

After a relatively slow opening round that saw both fighters finding their range, things began to open up in the second stanza with the two top-10 contenders throwing hands.

Near the two-minute mark of the round, Perez landed a solid overhand right that knocked Nicolau off balance and put him on his bicycle. Moving in on his opponent, Perez unleashed a combination punctuated with a right hook that caught Nicolau clean and immediately rendered him unconscious.

Official Result: Alex Perez def. Matheus Nicolau via KO (right hook) at 2:16 of Round 2.

With the win, Perez snaps a three-fight losing skid and will likely return to the flyweight top five. For Nicolau, it is his second-straight knockout loss after being finished in the first round against Brandon Royval at a Fight Night event last April.

Matt Schnell was forced to take drastic measures in order to make weight for his UFC Orlando bout.

Scheduled to square off with streaking flyweight Matheus Nicolau, ‘Danger’ will look to make it two in a row on Saturday night, but before he could make it to the Octagon, he needed to beat the scale. Schnell did exactly that with a little bit of creativity at Friday morning’s official weigh-in. Stepping on the scale, Schnell weighed in at 126.5 pounds, half a pound over the flyweight limit.

Matt Schnell Does What He Needs to Do In Order to Make Weight

Returning later for his second attempt, Matt Schnell had a freshly shaved head and as a result, weighed in at 126 pounds making him good to go for the main card showdown with the Brazilian Nicolau who is yet to experience defeat inside the Octagon.

Debuting for the UFC on season 24 of The Ultimate Fighter, Matt Schnell dropped his first two fights inside the Octagon before going on a four-fight win streak, capturing victories over Marko Beltran, Nioki Inoue, Louis Smolka, and Jordan Espinosa. Since then, ‘Danger’ has gone 2-3 in his last five with losses against Alexandre Pantoja, Rogerio Bontorin, and Brandon Royval.

He last competed at UFC on ABC 3 in July, scoring a second-round submission over Sumudaerji.

Saturday’s UFC Orlando event will be headlined by a middleweight showdown between No. 6 ranked Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson and everyone’s favorite real-life superhero, Kevin Holland. In the co-main event of the evening, former UFC champion Rafael dos Anjos returns to take on Bryan Barberena.

Next up on the UFC Vegas 21 main card is a flyweight bout between Manel Kape and Matheus Nicolau.

Round 1: Nicolau opens with an impactful leg kick. A lot of feinting since before Nicolau lands another leg kick. Kape is slowly backing Nicolau against the fence. Nicolau goes for a takedown after getting the body lock and has him down. Nicolau passes to half guard but Kape slowly gets up. Nicolau sinks in a guillotine but Kape escapes. Kape misses a spinning back kick. The fight goes to the ground soon after with Nicolau ending the round in Kape’s guard.

Round 2: Nicolau is backed up against the fence. He lands a body kick. Kape lands an uppercut which seems to have hurt Nicolau. Nicolau fails with a takedown attempt. Kape is swinging and throwing much more volume. Kape somewhat drops Nicolau with a left. Nicolau lands a nice right but Kape eats it. Kape lands a body shot. Kape gets take endn down but gets up to his feet right after. He lands a leg kick on Nicolau. He lands a couple of combos as Nicolau is backed up against the fence. Kape drops the pace a bit as Nicolau lands some strikes. Kape slips on a missed spinning back kick attempt as the round ends.

Round 3: Nicolau has a promising start as he lands punches and kicks and looks much more composed compared to the previous round. Nicolau goes for a takedown but Kape does well to defend it. Nicolau drops Kape with a leg kick. Both fighters start to swing now with Nicolau showing much more confidence to engage. It’s a much closer fight now. Kape starts to take over and lands a big knee to the head. Kape lands another one to the stomach. Nicolau connects with a spinning elbow. The fight comes to an end.

Official result: Matheus Nicolau defeats Manel Kape via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28).
