The UFC has announced two fan favorite fights for one of their upcoming events.

The promotion announced on Friday afternoon that former WSOF lightweight champion Justin Gaethje would fight fellow lightweight contender Dustin Poirier as well as a welterweight bout between Carlos Condit and Matt Brown. These fights are slated to take place at UFC on FOX 29 (UFC Glendale).

Going into Brown’s bout against Diego Sanchez on the main card of UFC Fight Night 120, he was on a three-fight stoppage skid and made it clear that this would be his retirement fight. As seen in the fight, he broke that losing streak by landing a devastating elbow strike to knock out the always tough Sanchez.

Just four years ago, they were booked against each other at UFC on FOX 9, but Brown sustained a back injury that forced him out of the fight. The bout never got re-booked.

Gaethje has been up and down under the UFC banner as he scored a TKO win over Michael Johnson while he lost by second-round TKO to fellow The Ultimate Fighter 26 coach Eddie Alvarez last month at UFC 218.

On the flip side, Poirier came back strong after his recent no-contest against Alvarez by scoring a third-round TKO win over Anthony Pettis in November.

The event is slated to take place on Saturday, April 14, 2018, at the Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona. The main card will air on FOX at while the preliminary card will be split broadcasted on FOX Sports 1 at and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass.

Matt Brown might be changing his tune about possibly retiring from pro-MMA competition.

It’s been well documented that his latest bout against Diego Sanchez on the main card of UFC Fight Night 120 on November 11th, 2017 at Ted Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk, Virginia would be his last fight.

Brown was on a three-fight stoppage skid and made it clear that this would be his retirement fight. As seen in the fight, he broke that losing streak by landing a devastating elbow strike to knock out the always tough Sanchez.

Now, things have changed, and Brown shed some light on it during a recent interview.

“(The) kids love me fighting,” Brown told MMAjunkie Radio. “They were jumping up and down when I told them I was fighting again. They were like, ‘Yes, yes’ and pumping their fists and shadow-boxing. They’re all about it. They want to see me fight, and they want to see me beat people up. So, they’re excited.

“I think the more adult family – it’s kind of up in the air. We see the pros and the cons. My wife certainly enjoys more time with me. But she likes fighting, too. She likes to see me accomplish what I set out to do. So we’re in it together.”

“I said, ‘Keep offering fights. If the right thing comes up, I will come right back,’” Brown said. Because of my retirement, I wouldn’t be able to make the weight that quickly.”

Earlier this month, a report came out stating that UFC is looking to book a fight between Brown and former interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit at a Fight Night event that is slated to take place on April 14. Keep in mind there’s has been no date or location revealed for this event. Also, the UFC has yet to come out and announce the bout.

“That was the big thing with the whole retirement. It really scared me, the thought of retiring,” Brown said. “It was a really nerve-wrecking thing. And I had no idea what I was going to do. So I just kind of had to make it official – which turned out not to be official, but at the time it was official. And I’m not so scared. I had lot of opportunities come up. I’ve been doing a lot of work with MusclePharm, specifically.

“Just a lot of opportunities came up that I guess I just didn’t realize were out there, because I’ve always been so hyper-focused on the fighting. And it just made me feel a lot more comfortable with stepping away from the sport. Just realizing there’s another world out there, and I can handle that, and I could be content with that.”

“I retired for the holidays,” Brown joked. “Starting the new year off back with a new fight, man. New outlook. New determination. New will. We’re back, man. Let’s do it.”

“When I said I was retiring, I never said how long… Looks like it won’t be as long as I planned either.”

Brown is still interested in fighting as he noted after his most recent bout that he would be interesting accepting a bout agreement against the former interim champion due to their history. Now, it appears that he will get his wish.

Just four years ago, they were booked against each other at UFC on FOX 9, but Brown sustained a back injury that forced him out of the fight. The bout never got re-booked.

Matt Brown might come out of retirement for one more bout. However, he has a certain competitor who he wants to fight.

For those may not recall, the story leading into Brown’s bout against Diego Sanchez on the main card of UFC Fight Night 120 on November 11th, 2017 at Ted Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk, Virginia was that it would be his last fight.

Going into it, Brown was on a three-fight stoppage skid and made it clear that this would be his retirement fight.

As seen in the fight, he broke that losing streak by landing a devastating elbow strike to knock out the always tough Sanchez.

Brown is still interested in fighting Carlos Condit. Just four years ago, they were booked against each other at UFC on FOX 9, but Brown sustained a back injury that forced him out of the fight. The bout never got re-booked.

Brown recently with the Fight Society podcast (transcript courtesy of MMA Fighting) and during the interview, he suggested that he would postpone his “semi-retirement” if this fight can be made.

“Maybe it’s time for me and him to lock horns,” said Brown. “I’d love to. I’ve got so much respect for him. Of course, I would love to. Everybody would want to see that fight. It was supposed to happen before.

We’ll see what happens. That’s definitely one people would want to see no matter what. It would be a fight for the ages. Now it would certainly be a fight that would make me want to come out of semi-retirement.”

“I haven’t made any decisions on anything. That would be one that would probably wake me up and get me out of bed.”

Brown has been a pro-MMA fighter for twelve years now, and it’s not often to see fighters go out on top and on their terms, which made it for a special moment when Brown got his hand raised in the Octagon.

“We’d definitely have to go five,” said Brown. “We’ll see what happens. Maybe Sean Shelby will be listening in and give me a call next week.”

If it were up to UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier, then Matt Brown would be retired by now.

The story leading into Brown’s bout against with Diego Sanchez on the main card of UFC Fight Night 120 this past Saturday night (November 11th, 2017) at Ted Constant Convocation Center in Norfolk, Virginia, was that it would be his last fight.

Going into it, Brown was on a three-fight stoppage skid and made it clear that this would be his retirement fight. As seen in the fight, he broke that losing streak by landing a devastating elbow strike to knock out the always tough Sanchez.

Brown has been a pro-MMA fighter for twelve years now, and it’s not often to see fighters go out on top and on their terms, which made it for a special moment when Brown got his hand raised in the Octagon. With him picking up the win, he is now having seconds thoughts especially since more people have encouraged him to carry on with his career.

“I’ve definitely had more people tell me not to retire than to retire, that’s for sure,” Brown said during the post-fight press conference. “But to be honest, nobody other than me and my family really has any bearing on that and close friends. So I’m not even going to allow anybody else’s opinions to get into my mind like that.”

Make no mistake about it, both Sanchez and Brown are in the same situation as they are two veterans who are not getting older and have taken way too many beatings for their own good. However, they refuse to give up the fight game and continue to press on with their careers.

Cormier is very familiar with the situation and advises Brown stick to his original plans. He wrote the following on his official Twitter account:

“Matt Brown will fight again, it’s a tale as old as time. Guy wants to walk away and then has awesome performance, and he stays. Perfect ending Matt, I’d say walk away. You have talked of retirement, so it’s too late to stay Brother.”
