Just when it looked like France’s Fares Ziam was on his way to a decisive decision victory, he put Matt Frevola’s lights out with a perfectly placed knee in the UFC Paris main card opener.
Riding a three-fight win streak, ‘Smile Killer’ was in the middle of a dominant performance against Frevola at Accor Arena and was well en route to a sweep on the scores. As we approached the three-minute mark of the third round, Ziam had Frevola’s back against the fence.
As ‘The Steamrolla’ attempted to turn himself to go belly-to-belly, Ziam launched a knee that caught Frevola flush on the chin and sent him crashing to the canvas.
With Frevola out on impact, the referee quickly stepped in and called for the stoppage.
Official Result: Fares Ziam def. Matt Frevola via KO (knee) at 2:59 of Round 3.

Looking for his fourth-straight finish, Drew Dober returned to the Octagon on Saturday night at UFC 288 for a lightweight scrap with Matt ‘The Steamrolla’ Frevola. Scoring knockouts in his last three outings, Dober was determined to add another highlight-reel finish to his already impressive resume as he continues his climb up the 155-pound rankings.
Both men immediately came out firing on all cylinders with Frevola targeting Dober’s body with a series of stiff body kicks. Dober began to bring the pressure, landing his signature left hand repeatedly. As they moved into the final minute of the first round, Dober ripped to the body of Frevola and ‘Steamrolla’ fired back with a nasty right hand that sent Dober crashing to the canvas.
Frevola, smelling blood in the water, jumped on his opponent and delivered a series of solid strikes on the ground forcing Herb Dean to step in and call for the stoppage with less than a minute to go in the round.
Official Result: Matt Frevola def. Drew Dober via TKO (strikes) at 4:08 of Round 1

When Matt Frevola made the walk last November in Madison Square Garden, it was a dream come true. The Long Island, New York native, who grew up about an hour away from “The World’s Most Famous Arena”, made the most of his opportunity at UFC 281.
The crowd popped when the 32-year-old landed a left hook that finished Ottman Azaitar early in the fight.
“It was pretty amazing and then to get the finish like I got, just a nice clean first round knockout, it was a dream come true…I think May 6, we’re gonna top it,” said Matt Frevola, who makes his tenth UFC appearance at UFC 288 against Drew Dober.
Frevola, who grew up a multi-sport athlete, credits amateur wrestling for his ambitious mindset. He started practicing jiu-jitsu under UFC Hall of Famer Matt Serra, who introduced him to Gracie Tampa South’s Matt Arroyo. It kicked off his mixed martial arts career.
“Wrestling really transformed me and taught me about hard work, taught me about grit,” Matt Frevola said. “I moved down to Tampa, Florida…I had all my amateur fights [and the] beginning of my pro career down in Tampa.”
After graduating from The University of Tampa, Frevola (10-3-1 Draw, six finishes) moved back to Long Island where he now trains full-time with Serra and Ray Longo under the Serra-Longo Fight Team, a group that includes UFC champion Aljamain Sterling, Merab Dvalishvili and Chris Weidman, to name a select few.
Frevola, who made a successful UFC debut in Dana White’s Contender Series (DWCS) in August 2017, is fueled by the amount of homegrown talent that surrounds him.
Along with his fierce grappling and stand-up game, Frevola’s greatest weapon is the knowledge he gains from a team full of former and current UFC champions.
“Watching how Matt Serra upset [Georges St-Pierre], Chris Weidman upsets Anderson Silva and then Aljamain Sterling upsets Petr Yan… To see people from where I’m from, being able to reach the top of the mountain and get UFC gold is just inspiring.”
Since joining the promotion in 2017, ‘The SteamRolla’ has won five of his nine UFC fights, including a unanimous decision win over current No. 10 ranked 155-pounder Jalin Turner.
It will take a win over No. 14 ranked Dober at UFC 288 to potentially place unranked Frevola in the top-15 of the welterweight division. Dober, who has finished his last three opponents by knockout and once faced champion Islam Makhachev, will undoubtedly be one of the biggest tests in Frevola’s nine-year pro career.
Matt Frevola plots a lightweight title run with a win over Drew Dober
While his recent TKO win over Azaitar was a career highlight, Matt Frevola’s ultimate goal is to add a UFC championship to his trophy case. An impressive win over Dober could lay the groundwork for a run at MMA immortality.
“I want to be the champion of the world. That’s the goal from the beginning and this fight against Dober gets us where we want to be.”
There were some huge highlights from the UFC’s return to Paris this past weekend but none caught the eye as much as the main card opener. Fares Ziam has continued to improve during his time on the roster but on home soil, he secured his biggest win and highlight to date. The French fighter was […]
Fares Ziam has continued to improve during his time on the roster but on home soil, he secured his biggest win and highlight to date.
The French fighter was dominant against Matt Frevola but sealed his fourth consecutive win in the lightweight division with a devastating knee.
Frevola knew that he needed to try and make something big happen to turn the fight around and as a result, was knocked out inside the Accor Arena.
Daniel Cormier Says He Would Prefer What Happened To Matt Frevola Over Decision Verdict
In their recap of the weekend’s action, Daniel Cormier had a bold take on this fight during the latest episode of ESPN MMA’s Good Guy / Bad Guy with Chael Sonnen.
“DC” made a point to say that he likes when corners are honest with their fighters about how the fight is going, which is a fair observation to make regarding this bout.
“Every time a guy’s losing two rounds to zero Chael and sometimes the coach goes, ‘Oh it might be one-to-one, it’s very close.’ And then there’s the other coach that goes, ‘You’re down two, we got to finish this guy.’ And I’m like, that’s the coach I love. I love that he tells his guy the truth.”
However, where some people may disagree with Cormier’s approach is him stating that he would prefer what happened in this fight over Frevola losing the third round and therefore the decision.
“I prefer what happened to Frevola than him going out there and just losing by decision and really not showing no oomph.”
Of course, showing desire to go out there and pull off the win is important but that also can lead to significant damage, like what happened with Frevola.
He did try to go out there and make a big impact in the third and final round but as a result, he was knocked out cold rather than being on the wrong end of a decision.
“Leaves openings, that happens, it is what it is, people get knocked out but you give yourself an opportunity because we have seen on so many different occasions where the guy overcomes and wins a third period to win the fight.”

In his native France, Farès Ziam pulled off a vicious knockout that seemed to come out of nowhere to score a late victory over Matt Frevola on the main card of UFC Paris.
Ziam appeared to show continued improvement over the course of the fight’s first two rounds, seemingly in a comfortable lead as the contest headed into the third.
It was there, however, where Ziam unleashed violence that no one saw coming.
With the two of them against the fence, Ziam turned Frevola and landed a stunning knee to the head that dropped the American out cold to score a KO of the Year contender.
Frevola was unconscious for several minutes after the finish.

Frevola, meanwhile, has now lost back-to-back fights and has dropped four of his last seven.
