How else could Jon Fitch take to his Facebook page this week and declare himself not only a clear winner over B.J. Penn at UFC 127, but a victor over the “best BJ ANY of us have ever seen”?

As Fitch saw it, rounds two and three were clearly his. Round one? That was a draw in Fitch’s eyes. As in, the round where he was taken down, gave up his back, and spent most of it simply trying not to get choked. Yep, a clear 10-10 round against the greatest Penn ever, if you ask Fitch.

B.J. Penn reunited with a former rival last week, not as foes but as training partners.

Penn, who competed against Matt Hughes in a trilogy of fights spanning 2004 to 2010, recently worked with Hughes in preparation for his upcoming UFC 127 fight against Jon Fitch on Feb. 27 in Australia.

“Me and Matt had great workouts,” Penn said Tuesday on a conference call. “Him pushing me up against the fence, him trying to take me down. I definitely think that was the best training partner I could have had for this fight.”

Nick Diaz is one of the hardest fighters to rank in mixed martial arts.

Some folks argue that Diaz is a Top 5 welterweight, and maybe even the guy with the best combination of skills to dethrone the consensus No. 1, Georges St. Pierre. His win over Evangelista Cyborg Santos was Diaz’s ninth straight victory, and he’s finished eight of those nine opponents. It’s been a long time since Diaz stepped into the cage and turned in an unimpressive performance.

But others argue that Diaz isn’t even a Top 10 welterweight because the quality of his opposition has been less than stellar. None of those nine wins has come against anyone who’s even close to a Top 10 opponent himself. And Strikeforce has matched Diaz up with opponents who play to his strengths, while never testing what may be Diaz’s greatest weakness by putting him in the cage with a wrestler.

So where do we rank Diaz? I have my answer below. Your answer may differ.

The first week of 2011 is coming to an end, and it seems like a good time to give away a few t-shirts. Fun fact: This is the third "Comments of the Week" post that we’ve published in the last three months. It almost seems like we should change the name to something…I don’t know…more fitting somehow. If you have any suggestions, we’d love to hear ’em, because we’re absolutely stumped.

Anyway, three commenters stood out from the pack this week, setting a standard for the new year that ALL of you should be living up to. If your name is called, please send your real name, address, and shirt-size to [email protected] and we’ll hook you up…

Uh-oh! We ain’t saying no names, but it looks like at least one aging UFC superstar might be a little bit jealous about Chuck Liddell’s new “job” as the UFC’s Executive Vice President of Business Development. We’ll give you a hint … let’s see here … it’s a guy who … ah fuck it, it’s Matt Hughes. Yeah, we were conducting our bi-monthly spin by Hughes’ blog this week to make sure we filled our quota for smug, semi-coherent unchristian Christian blather when we stumbled upon this gem. Country Breakfast’s latest entry, headlined simply “Chuck’s Retirement,” is so textbook Hughes that it makes you wonder if the former welterweight champ is really even still writing these things himself or if it’s just some computerized algorithm that will continue to publish blogs in Hughes’ name long after the human race has faced the wrath of his vengeful God.

In this case, the algorithm is something like: Act like a dick, act like a dick, holiday snapshot of the kid, Bible verse, end. It’s interesting to note here that in this entry ostensibly about Chuck’s retirement, Hughes spends just a couple short paragraphs on Liddell before segueing straight into an out-of-the-blue indictment of Georges St. Pierre’s “boring” performance against Josh Koscheck at UFC 124. Shit. Now, that’s just sour grapes, plain and simple. First the Liddell stuff …

Matt Hughes and Georges St. Pierre had a great trilogy of fights in the Octagon, but their rivalry died down a bit after they fought for the third and final time, with Hughes seeming to have gained a grudging respect for the man who beat him twice.

Or maybe not.

A month after the fact, Hughes has weighed in on St. Pierre’s unanimous decision victory over Josh Koscheck at UFC 124, and Hughes is telling St. Pierre the same thing that St. Pierre once told him: “I’m not impressed by your performance.”
