Max Holloway vs. Brian Ortega at UFC 226 is off.

The news broke last night (Wed. July 4, 2018) with the reason for “Blessed’s” pull-out was due to concussion-like symptoms. Now Ortega has been removed from the UFC 226 card altogether.

The news shook the mixed martial arts (MMA) community, not only because of the fact that one of the most highly anticipated fights of the year was called off – but due to the severity of Holloway’s condition.

Helwani reports that Holloway’s team noticed the featherweight champion hasn’t been the same since last week. Prior to even starting his weight cut, it was noticeable that something was up with “Blessed” as he made the media rounds giving various interviews to promote UFC 226.

He continued to show concussion-like symptoms before being admitted into a local ER on Monday. He was kept overnight but was subsequently released after tests showed everything was seemingly okay. While he was showing some improvement over the next day, he was still also showing obvious symptoms. At one point, after open workouts, Holloway took a nap and his team found it hard to wake him up. When he finally did he had flashing vision and was slurring his words.

It was later announced that he had pulled out of his UFC 226 co-main event meeting against Brian Ortega. Many fighters took to Twitter to react to the news, showing their support for Holloway and sending their best wishes in regards to his health.

One Tweet, however, stuck out amongst all the rest – Conor McGregor’s. “The Notorious One” took to his account today (Thurs. July 5, 2018) and issued out the following:

“My thoughts and my respect are with 145-pound world champion Max ‘Blessed’ Holloway.”

McGregor and Holloway have a bit of history with one another. The Irishman defeated the Hawaiian back in 2013 via unanimous decision. Holloway has not lost a fight inside the Octagon since. McGregor eventually went on the defeat Jose Aldo to win the featherweight title but would later depart the division to compete at lightweight and welterweight.

In his absence, Holloway picked up a pair of wins over Aldo himself en-route to winning 145-pound gold as well. He remains the featherweight champion of the UFC as of this writing.

Brian Ortega Officially Off UFC 226, Will Wait For Healthy Max Holloway

Brian Ortega is officially off of UFC 226.

When news broke Wednesday evening that featherweight champion Max “Blessed” Holloway was removed from UFC 226 for exhibiting concussion-like symptoms, so did the dream of Brian “T-City” Ortega of becoming the new 145-pound king.

For now, anyway.

Ortega (14-0), has quickly risen through the ranks of the UFC to become the number one contender to Holloway’s belt. “T-City” needed less than a round to put former champion Frankie Edgar to sleep, surprisingly enough via knockout. Now the Southern California native will have to wait a little longer to get his chance at Holloway’s featherweight strap.

Speaking with MMA Fighting, Ortega’s coach Rener Gracie would state that the only way Ortega would, in fact, stay on UFC 226 is if his fighter had a chance to capture gold. Gracie later confirmed Ortega would not be competing this weekend.

There is no denying that losing the co-main is a big blow to the landmark event, albeit, UFC 226 is still full of exciting match-ups. The heavyweight bout between Francis Ngannou and Derrick Lewis has been promoted to the new co-main event.

You can read the complete statement from the UFC below:

Featherweight champion Max Holloway is out of his scheduled bout against Brian Ortega due to injury and the fight has been removed from Saturday’s UFC 226 card. Stepping into the co-main event position is a highly-anticipated heavyweight bout featuring No. 1-ranked Francis Ngannou and No. 5-ranked Derrick Lewis. The bout featuring Paul Felder and Mike Perry will move to the main card.

The four athletes will be available at today’s press conference in Las Vegas at 3 p.m. PT, which will be available to view online at www.ufc.com.

UFC 226: Miocic vs. Cormier is taking place at T-Mobile Arena this Saturday, July 7 and is available on pay-per-view starting at 10 p.m. ET.

Brian Ortega has reacted to the news of Max Holloway being pulled from the UFC 226 title fight.

Ortega was originally slated to challenge Holloway for the featherweight title in the co-main event of this pay-per-view event.

However, it was revealed the night of July 4th that Holloway had to pull out after he had been experiencing concussion-like symptoms and was taken to a hospital on Monday night.

Things appeared to be on the upswing as he felt better on Tuesday and still wanted to compete. However, late that day, things got worse and the call was made to pull him from this event.

Ortega beat former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar at the UFC 222 pay-per-view, which secured the opportunity to challenge for the featherweight title. He is unbeaten in his MMA career and holds wins over the likes of Edgar, Cub Swanson, Renato Moicano, and Clay Guida.

Hours after the news broke, Ortega took to his official Twitter account to give his reaction to the fight being pulled as he wrote the following, “It is what it is.  We’ll run this **** later.”

Based on Ortega’s comments, it appears that he will wait this one out and won’t fight a new opponent on short notice at UFC 226.

It will be interesting to see when this fight is made as one would think Holloway would wait 90 days before fighting again but Holloway is a born fighter and will likely want to fight as soon as possible and if that’s the case then UFC 227 may be the time this fight is made as it takes place next month.

UFC 226 is set to take place on Saturday, July 7, 2018, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass, at 6:30 p.m. ET.

This Saturday’s UFC 226 has lost one of its most awaited fights.

UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway has been forced out of his title bout against Brian Ortega in the co-main event of this weekend’s (Sat., July 7, 2018) pay-per-view from T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, according to a report from ESPN this evening.

In a statement to MMA Fighting from Holloway’s manager Brian Butler-Au, his team detailed that the champion had been experiencing concussion-like symptoms and was taken to a hospital on Monday night. He felt better on Tuesday and still wanted to compete, but then got worse today and was pulled from the fight.

Read the full statement from Holloway’s management below:

Max’s team and UFC staff noticed Max was not normal since late last week. This became obvious to many watching his interviews and public appearances the past few days.

He was showing concussion like symptoms before he even started his weight cut and was rushed to the ER on Monday where they admitted him over night. Initial scans seemed okay and he was released Tuesday afternoon but symptoms still continued.

Max fought with his team to continue with the fight. He showed some improvement over the next day but was still showing obvious symptoms. After open workouts he crashed and was very hard to wake up, when he did he had flashing vision and slurred speech.

Ortega’s team said they had not yet been contacted by the UFC for a replacement fight, but would most likely not be interested unless it was a title bout.

This is the third time Holloway has pulled out of a fight in 2018 after he withdrew from his scheduled title defense against Frankie Edgar at UFC 222 in March and was deemed medically unfit to make weight on short notice for his last-minute lightweight title match-up with Khabib Nurmagomedov at April’s UFC 223.

UFC 226 will move forward with its high-profile heavyweight super fight between champion Stipe Miocic and light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier.
