Seeking to extend his 12-fight win streak, UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway will face former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar in the main event of March 3’s UFC 222 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The fight is a rebooking of their previously-scheduled match in the main event of December 2’s UFC 218, where Holloway stopped late replacement Jose Aldo, the longtime champion whom he originally won the belt from last June, after Edgar suffered an orbital injury in training and was forced to pull out.

This week the UFC released the official fight poster for the marquee featherweight main event but based on the reaction from fans, it’s not that fight that’s getting all of the publicity (and heat) on social media. No, the fight directly below Holloway vs. Edgar, a Stefan Struve vs. Andrei Arlovski heavyweight co-main event, is the one that’s causing a minor uprising.

And it may be tough to blame the fans, because while Struve vs. Arlovski is certainly a heavyweight throwdown that could not only be exciting but end with a huge knockout, the fight isn’t exactly a pay-per-view-worthy co-main event, at least not in the eyes of many.

What’s more, the booking comes during a time when the promotion has been accused of watering down cards to fill the packed, slogging schedule which many fans have said is sapping their commitment to MMA, something that probably wasn’t enhanced by the UFC recently raising prices for pay-per-view shows. PPV sales were lower than they had been in years throughout 2017 as well, with a precipitous dropoff from the banner 2016 coming just when new owners Endeavor had taken over control of the UFC.

So while fans believed Struve vs. Arlovski was a great bout for a Fight Night or Fight Pass-aired card, putting it in the co-main event of a numbered and costly pay-per-view event has the UFC faithful offering some stiff opinions on the matter. Check it out right here and let us know yours:

UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway is scheduled to defend his 145-pound title for the second time against ex-lightweight titleholder Frankie Edgar on March 3, 2017 in the main event of UFC 22 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The 26-year-old Hawaiian will be looking to extend his winning streak to an incredible 13-straight, and given his dominance at featherweight, a move up to 155 pounds is certainly a possibility for blessed.

And if he were to move up in weight, Holloway recently revealed that he’d like to do battle with undefeated top contender Khabib Nurmagomedov:

“Oh yeah, for sure (interst in future fight vs Khabib Nurmagomedov),” Holloway told TMZ. “I think Khabib is a beast and that’s the kind of guys you want to fight to cement your legacy. He’s over here making all the greats, all the top guys look average and I want to fight him. People keep telling me, ‘he’s gonna smash you and this and that,’ I’ve heard this before. I have nothing but respect for the guy but at the end of the day if you want to be the best you have to beat the best.”

“The Eagle” holds a perfect professional record of 25-0 with nine of those victories coming in the UFC. Over the past few years he’s dealt with a few injuries and some weight-cutting issues, but he seems to be back to full health, as he recently scored a dominant one-sided decision victory over Edson Barboza at last month’s UFC 219.

Moving forward, Nurmagomedov, who has discussed a potential drop down to featherweight, will likely be matched up against either Tony Ferguson or Conor McGregor.

Although they’re both a bit tied up right now, would you like to see Holloway and Nurmagomedov clash in the future?

The early betting odds for a fight that has been months in the making have been released.

UFC officials have already announced that UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway will make his next title defense against former UFC lightweight champion Frankie Edgar at UFC 222.

If you recall, this bout was originally scheduled for the UFC 218 pay-per-view event last month. However, Edgar was forced to withdraw from the fight after suffering a broken orbital bone in training.

This led to Holloway fighting Jose Aldo in a rematch, which saw Holloway successfully retain his title with a grisly third-round TKO.

Holloway is currently on a 12-fight win streak, which is the fifth-longest undefeated run in UFC history.

On the flip side, Edgar has picked up a 7-2 record since dropping down to 145 pounds. His only losses came from Aldo by decision. It should be noted that Edgar only fought once last year which saw him score a second-round win via doctor’s stoppage over top prospect Yair Rodriguez.

Holloway opened as a sizable betting favorite over Edgar as Holloway was listed as the favorite (-280) to defeat Edgar (+225) in the opening betting lines.

UFC 222 is set to take place on March 3, 2018, at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The main card will air on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. ET while the preliminary card will air on FOX Sports 1 at 8 p.m. ET and the promotion’s streaming service, UFC Fight Pass. Here is the updated card:

Champ Max Holloway vs. Frankie Edgar – for featherweight title

C.B. Dollaway vs. Hector Lombard

Sean O’Malley vs. Andre Soukhamthath

Andrei Arlovski vs. Stefan Struve

Mackenzie Dern vs. Ashley Yoder

If you were upset that Frankie Edgar was forced to pull out of his scheduled featherweight title bout versus Max Holloway at UFC 218 on December 2, 2017, you won’t have to wait long to see it.

UFC officials confirmed today that the surging “Blessed” will take on former lightweight champion Edgar in the main event of March 3’s UFC 222 from the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The Hawaiian Holloway turned heads in every corner of the mixed martial arts world throughout 2017, winning the official UFC 145-pound title from longtime former champion Jose Aldo via third-round TKO at June 2017’s UFC 212 and defending it by stopping Aldo in the third round once again at UFC 218 after “The Answer” was forced out with an orbital injury. The victories against the all-time great had Holloway high on many people’s “Fighter of the Year” list, and many thought he was indeed the best of 2017.

The win gave Holloway an unprecedented 12th in a row since his unanimous decision loss to former champion Conor McGregor in August 2013. He also won the interim featherweight belt against Anthony Pettis at December 2016’s UFC 206.

He’ll face one of the most grizzled veterans in the UFC in Edgar, who has exhibited toughness and grit uncommon even in the highest levels of MMA. “The Answer” was last seen dominating formerly touted prospect Yair Rodriguez at last May’s UFC 211 to earn his title shot, which will almost certainly be his last in the octagon without a win, as he’s dropped four straight bouts with a belt on the line.

But he’s also won his last seven non-championship fights and has been one of if not the most consistent performers in the UFC for many years. He won the lightweight title from legend BJ Penn in 2010 and defended it against longtime rival Grey Maynard before dropping two close bouts to Benson Henderson and moving down to featherweight in 2013.

Healed from his orbital issue, Edgar will now have his latest- and most likely last – chance to win UFC gold.

Can he stop the momentum of a surging freight train like Holloway?
