After winning the UFC featherweight title with an incredible 13-second knockout of Jose Aldo in Dec. 2015, Conor McGregor immediately jumped up in weight without defending the title, leaving the division in chaos.

This past June, however, rising star Max Holloway added clarity to the division when he stopped Jose Aldo in the main event of UFC 212 to become the undisputed 145-pound champion.

Recently, McGregor has said that he still considers himself the featherweight champion despite being stripped of the title late last year. Holloway, who lost a decision to the “Notorious” one in 2013, doesn’t agree with that idea, although he doesn’t take McGregor’s accomplishments away from him:

“I can’t do nothing about it. He was the champ once upon a time. He was the 2015 champ. They forgot to announce the year part,” Holloway said earlier this week on The MMA Hour. “It’s a little mixup I think they’ll figure out soon enough that they was the champ, you can’t take that away from ‘em. If Demetrious Johnson, he lost his fight, and he lost his belt, and he wanted to walk out with 10 of his belts that he has, you’re going to tell him he can’t?

“That’s his belts, he earned the damn thing, (McGregor) earned his belt and that’s his belt, but they forgot the clearcut ‘2015’. That belt is just a basic ‘do not defend’ belt, that’s what you’d call it, that’s what he did so I’m not going to take away from him.”

Holloway also made it clear that he wouldn’t be concerned if McGregor ever decided to come back to featherweight, as he promised the Irishman an ‘a**whipping’:

“No, because that means he’d have to fight my ass,” Holloway said. “If you want an asswhipping at 145, come on down. Everybody can get it. I’m here, I want to fight everyone. Being a champion now, I get to hang out with champions inside the organization, I get to be around other champions that are not even in our sport, and the mindset is different. It’s hard to go out there and protect something that you earned. I worked hard, I got this belt, I earned it.”

Holloway’s next fight has not yet been booked, although he’s expected to take on former lightweight champion Frankie Edgar in his first title defense.

Jose Aldo is set to engage in competition once again next week, but this time it won’t be inside the UFC Octagon.

The former 145-pound kingpin is coming off his second loss in over a decade as he was finished in the fourth round of his featherweight title unifier against Max Holloway last month (Sat. June 3, 2017). After seeming to control the opening rounds of the bout, the Hawaiian rocked “Scarface” with a nasty combo, and it was all downhill for the Brazilian from there.

Just over one month later, however, Aldo is set to feed his competitive drive once again as he is slated to take part in the  IBJJF’s Master International Championship in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The tournament runs through July 28th to the 30th. The federation made the following announcement yesterday (Thurs. July 20, 2017):

“We are very honored to have the great Jose Aldo Junior registered for the Master South America,” IBJJF said. “We can’t wait to see this MMA legend representing the Nova União team in the light division.”

Aldo will be competing in the lightweight division of the tournament, along with three-time world champion Celsinho Venicius. Aldo has a black belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under longtime head-coach and manager Andre Pederneiras. He hasn’t competed in a jiu-jitsu rules tournament for over a decade.

He defeated the now-highly-decorated Rubens Charles “Cobrinha” as a brown belt back in 2004 before winning the CBJO gold, and then transitioned into mixed martial arts (MMA).

Aldo has only ever lost two fights in his UFC career – a 13-second knockout loss to Conor McGregor for the featherweight title back in December of 2015, and to Holloway last month.

UFC featherweight champ Max Holloway may have to wait a little bit longer for the UFC to take a trip to his native Hawaii.

“Blessed” has taken the UFC’s featherweight division by storm since suffering his last Octagon loss to Conor McGregor back in 2013, racking up a ridiculous 11 fight win streak over some of the division’s finest. Holloway was able to capture the interim featherweight strap back in December when he finished former 155-pound champ Anthony Pettis in the third round of their UFC 206 meeting.

He followed that up with a third round knockout win over 145-pound legend Jose Aldo in his own backyard of Brazil to unify the promotion’s featherweight titles. After the bout, Holloway continued to campaign heavily for the UFC to take a trip over to the islands of Hawaii, however, UFC President Dana White says that’s easier said than done (quotes via MMA Junkie):

“Nobody wants to fly to Hawaii and do a show more than me and my staff,” White said. “Who wouldn’t want to go there? And the media? Everybody wants to go there. It’s a tough one to pencil.

“They don’t have an arena. They have the outside bowl. I’m terrified to do anything outside with fighting. I used to spend a lot of time in Hawaii early on when we bought the company because there were a lot of good fights out there. It rains every 10 minutes. It’s raining, and then it’s beautiful out … it’s raining, then it’s beautiful out. It’s scary, man.”

The UFC has been doing a ton of things they never thought they’d do lately, opening up a new female 145-pound division to build around Cris Cyborg in addition to being on the brink of creating an Ultimate Fighter tournament to crown an inaugural 125-pound champ. Given recent developments, White said he’s done saying ‘no’ and we’ll just have to wait and see what happens.

“Six months ago, I said we wouldn’t do the (women’s) 125-pound division,” White said. “So I’m not saying no anymore. We’ll see what happens.”

As for his featherweight champion’s current run through the division, White couldn’t be happier for the 25-year-old title holder, praising his personality and the fact that Hawaii once again has a UFC champ

“He’s awesome,” White said. “If you look at his run, it’s been amazing. He’s a good kid. Hawaii finally has a champ again.”
