In this article, we’ll look back at 10 incidents where a MMA fighter has came as close as you are likely to get to a real-life crime-fighting superhero by putting their hard-earned abilities to good use in the spur of the moment in order to catch a criminal.

Jon Jones

These days UFC light heavyweight superstar Jon Jones may be better known for his own run-ins with the law, but back in March of 2011 he was still cultivating a squeaky-clean persona in the public eye as he prepared for his first ever title shot against the light-heavyweight champion at the time, Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua.

On the day of the event in Newark, New Jersey, Jones and his long-time coaches Greg Jackson and Mike Winkeljohn traveled to a nearby park in order to relax and get his mind right ahead of the biggest fight of his career.

They had been forewarned that this was a rough neighborhood, and sure enough, before they had even stepped out of the car a thief smashed an elderly couple’s car window nearby, stole their belongings and then took off running down the street.

Jackson and Winkeljohn immediately began chasing after the criminal, but Jones soon accelerated ahead of them and was able to footsweep the criminal to stop him in his tracks.

Worried that the fighter might get injured before his big fight, Jackson yelled at him to stay away and then took over himself, diving on top of the thief and applying an armlock, while Jones then figure-foured his legs to keep him in place until the police arrived.

Just hours later, Jones would go on to TKO ‘Shogun’ in the third round at UFC 128, marking the start of a long title reign at 205 pounds.

ICYMI: Mayura “The Karate Clerk” Dissanayake Scored an 18-Second KO Over the Weekend

Back in July, we brought you the news (and video footage) of Houston gas station attendant/MMA fighter Mayura Dissanayake thwarting a robbery via a hellstorm of soccer kicks. The video was cathartic, uplifting, and kewl, and soon garnered more Youtube views than “Bully Beatdown Jason ‘Mayhem’ Miller vs Bully Andrew”, which is an impressive accomplishment by *any* standard.

On Saturday night, Dissanayake stepped out from behind the counter and back into the ring at Savarese Promotion’s hybrid MMA and muay Thai card in Houston, taking on Jaime Garcia in an amatuer contest. Once again, Dissanayake delivered a lightning fast, supremely violent finish, peppering Garcia with a few leg kicks before clipping him with a left hand as he was charging forward in typically amateurish fashion.

A few follow up punches and it was good night Garcia, who at the very least, should find some comfort in the fact that he didn’t wake up from his beating in a jail cell. #thelittlethings

Videos of would-be robbers getting their asses kicked by MMA fighters at gas stations are nothing new around here. But of all the “mma fighter foils robbery” videos in the “gas station” sub-category, this new one from Houston might be our favorite, and it’s for one simple reason: PRIDE rules.

When a truck full of marauders sets upon a Fuel Depot employee returning from a bank run, the victim’s co-worker — Sri Lankan MMA champ Mayura Dissanayake — springs into action, and scores two immediate knockdowns with a brutal head kick and a barrage of punches. Momentum has shifted, and things only get worse for the robbers from there.

As the bad guys scramble to get back into the getaway SUV, Dissanayake lands a hook on a hapless crook named Odell Mathis, who falls to the concrete. As Mathis’s ride pulls away, Dissanayake lands four clean soccer-kicks to his dome, starts to walk off, then changes his mind and kicks Mathis in the face two more times. Street justice has been served, homey.

“I just kicked him until he lays down on the floor,” Dissanayake said. “Until he stopped moving, ’cause I wasn’t sure if he had a knife or a gun, so I wanted him to stop moving.”

Serious question: Is this just a viral ad for the long-delayed season of TUF India? Because you have to assume that Mayura Dissanayake would be the front-runner at this point.
