UFC lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez rose to the top of the pack with a stunning knockout against Rafael dos Anjos. The Brazilian grappler was beginning to build a powerful streak at 155 pounds, but ‘The Silent Assassin’ took care of business when they met at UFC Fight Night 90 and now he’s taken his second major title. After spending the best part of two years on the shelf during contractual disputes with Bellator where he was also the lightweight boss, Alvarez has come of age in the UFC.

But what’s next for the heavy hitting Philadelphia native? The mess at the top of the lightweight division provides no clear answers. Number one contender Khabib Nurmagomedov continues to cause a queue with his absence, Tony Ferguson found himself facing an unranked opponent last time out, and the rest of the division is either tied up or coming off losses. For Alvarez, it’s all about the big money fights now.

Eddie Alvarez

During an interview with Sirius XM Radio, as quoted by MMAFighting.com, Eddie Alvarez says he wants the winner of the Nate Diaz vs. Conor McGregor rematch at UFC 202, rankings be damned.

“Initially I want the winner of Conor-Nate. I would like a big pay-per-view, big money fight. I’m willing to wait for one of them guys. I almost got in a fight with Nate in Mexico City so maybe we can settle our differences, and if Conor happens to win I welcome that fight as well.

“The number one contender in my weight class has fought once in about the last three years or something. So I’m a little nervous about fighting a guy like that who barely shows up to fight. So Conor and Nate, they’re the guys on my radar, one of them I’d really like to get my hands on.”

Conor vs. Diaz

It certainly will be interesting to see what’s next for McGregor or Diaz. If ‘The Notorious’ wins will there be a trilogy match, or if Diaz wins does McGregor finally fight in the rematch with Jose Aldo? In terms of the lightweight rankings, Alvarez says they mean little to him in the search for his next fight:

“Rankings are subjective anyway. For someone to say, ‘This guy’s number one,’ who claims him to be number one and why is he number one? That’s a question we’ve got to ask ourselves. It’s subjective. So to say, ‘The guy is number one, he should get the title shot,’ it’s not necessarily so.

“Look at the case between Tony Ferguson and Khabib. Tony Ferguson is 8-0, he’s been active for the last God-knows-how-what, he’s been finishing opponents, been on a tear; Khabib’s fought once in three years and he’s number one and he decides he wants a title shot? The last guy he beat was virtually un-ranked – maybe top 100 in the world – and he’s the number one guy in the world. So who says that? Who makes that up? Who appoints him number one? That being said, make the fights that make sense. Make the fights the fans want to see. Who gives a shit about the rankings?”

It wasn’t just he fight between Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor that rocked our world, it was the entire package, head-to-toe, and all crammed in to just 11 days. When UFC lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos dropped out of the March 5 UFC 196 main event, unlikely replacement Nate Diaz stepped in to the frame. It would be a welterweight affair, but even so the bookmakers heavily favored the featherweight champion McGregor to take home the victory.

Diaz would throw up the middle finger to the underdog status he’d been labelled with, slapping and clowning ‘The Notorious’ en route to a crazy second round submission win.

Although briefly booked to headline the blockbuster UFC 200 card this coming July 9 weekend, McGregor and Diaz have instead been scheduled to rematch at UFC 202 on August 20. In honor of that amazing first fight and what will no doubt be an insane second scrap, we’ve gone back and selected the top five moments from the Diaz/McGregor rivalry.

From the press conferences, social media rants, all the way to the fight itself and beyond, this rivalry really has it all.

5. Touch Butt In The Park

When Conor McGregor tried to take a stab at Nate Diaz’s training partners during the UFC 196 pre-fight press conference, he didn’t expect to get this response. Blasting McGregor for playing touch butt in the park with ‘the dork with the pony tail’ became an instantly classic moment in MMA history.

Diaz would end up feeding McGregor all his words and more when they met, and the next moment might well be what spurred the Stockton bad boy on to victory.

4. Gazelle Argument

During fight week for UFC 196, Diaz and McGregor sat down with FOX Sports Jay & Dan or a now historic interview. The subject of an injured gazelle was brought up, and from there onward the debate spiralled quickly in to insanity.

You know it’s the real sh*t! Yes we did, and we loved every minute of it.

3. Greatest Prediction EVER

When Nate Diaz gets on the microphone before a fight, you know there’s some good stuff about to go down. Much like his older brother Nick, the Stockton native doesn’t mince his words or try and come up with some sort of smart ass remarks.

When Nate Diaz gets asked for a prediction about his upcoming fight, you better believe he’s expecting some ninja sh*t.

2. Gun Signs With The Left Hand

At the first of two pre-fight pressers in just 11 days, Nate Diaz and Conor McGregor squared off in a trash talking showdown for the media. This was perhaps the first and only time that McGregor really got the nest of Diaz in the mental game, and boy, it was hilarious.
Funny that he brought up BJJ there, as that would be McGregor’s downfall when the two eventually met.

1. The fight, post fight interview and aftermath

We had to include all this in the last section of the list, as all deserve equal recognition for their place in UFC history. The fight itself was an absolute barn burner, back-and-forth striking exchanges before the inevitable submission win for Diaz.

Then ‘I’m not surprised motherf*ckers’ and the stream of remixes, memes and crazy reactions that spread like wildfire across the internet.

Conor McGregor rode in to the UFC 196 main event fight with Nate Diaz on the back of a whole lot of hype and expectations. Unfortunately for McGregor and his infamous hordes of loyal fans, it was Nate Diaz on just 11 days notice who would claim the spoils of victory. In one of the wildest moments of 2016 so far, Diaz rocked ‘The Notorious’ and finished him with a second round submission.

The Stockton star was propelled in to the limelight after so many years of toiling in the non-needle mover category, and the featherweight champion was left with some serious reflection of both his performance and grappling skills. In his post fight interview with Joe Rogan, McGregor claimed he was not efficient with his energy, pretty much meaning he emptied the tank in round one looking for that big knockout finish.

All the talk of eating steaks instead of salads before his UFC 196 welterweight clash with Diaz would now come back to haunt McGregor. Had he really thought that when Diaz replaced Rafael dos Anjos he’d have a walk in the park? According to his coach John Kavanagh, as per his new book ‘win or learn’ (transcribed by The 42), McGregor’s loss was a lesson in many ways.

What people seem to forget about this whole thing is that Conor just loves to fight. Everything else — money, belts or fame — is just a bonus. It’s important that people understand that. He puts himself in dangerous, risky situations by accepting late changes of opponent and exploring different weight classes. Who else would do that in the same way he does? He keeps doing it because it’s all just so much fun to him. He takes those chances because he knows he’ll end up regretting it if he doesn’t, irrespective of the consequences. A strategy error in round two was the difference between victory and defeat on this occasion. Nevertheless, the sun still rose the following morning, just as it would have done if he had won.

McGregor’s long time coach reveals what changes they plan on making for the rematch with Diaz at UFC 202 in August. It includes a drastic change in the featherweight champ’s diet…

Former UFC and WEC lightweight title contender Donald Cerrone made a smooth transition up to welterweight in Fenbruary, defeating fellow ‘Cowboy’ Alex Oliveira with a slick triangle choke. After a failed 155-pound title attempt against Rafael dos Anjos in December of last year, the nine-year UFC/WEC veteran decided he’d try his luck at 170 pounds. Now set to face Patrick Cote at this weekend’s UFC Fight Night 89, Cerrone recently teased a potential move to middleweight in the future.

Cerrone’s willingness to take short notice fights against anyone, anytime saw him compete 12 times in the UFC octagon between January 2013 and December 2015. Wins over Benson Henderson and Eddie Alvarez highlight ‘Cowboy’s’ 16-4 promotional record.

Cowboy Cerrone

Talking during a live Facebook Q&A this week, Donald Cerrone addressed a number of interesting questions from fans, and also some ‘keyboard warriors.’ First up he made a prediction for the welterweight main event in Ottawa between Rory MacDonald and Stephen ‘Wonderboy’ Thompson:

“I think Wonderboy is going to win (the main event vs. MacDonald). I think he’s going to take it, I really do, that’s a fight I’d be interested in facing the winner of. I don’t know if I’m going to stay at 170 or go back to 155, but I know I’m going to stay fighting, I love it, it’s what I enjoy doing; kicking ass.”

On Brock Lesnar vs. Mark Hunt at UFC 200 and GSP’s return:

“If Mark (Hunt) gets a hold of him, I think he’s going to put him to sleep. But if Brock (Lesnar) goes out there and wrestles him he’s going to take it to the ground…I also think GSP is going to make a comeback, I hear there’s works for him to come back at 185. Should be fun, I really like him.”

Cerrone also got asked a number of questions about UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor, which you can find on the next page.

It appears as though the big meeting between featherweight champion Conor McGregor, UFC President Dana White, and UFC CEO Lorenzo Fertitta went well this past Thursday night.

After refusing to appear at a Las Vegas press event to promote his UFC 200 main event rematch bout against Nate Diaz, McGregor was removed from the colossal summer card and the bout was scrapped entirely.

Since then McGregor and UFC officials have engaged in a bumping of heads over the Irishman’s future, however a dinner meeting between ‘Notorious’, White, and Fertitta was made in effort to mend the slightly bended relationship.

The three men met for a private dinner at the Montage Hotel in Beverley Hills, accompanied by three huge bodyguards. While McGregor and White were all smiles after the dinner meeting, ‘Notorious’ took some time in an interview with ESPN to assure that his relationship with the organization is just fine:

“I met with Dana and Mr. Fertitta, good conversation like it always is. We have a good relationship.

It is what it is. It happens. This is the fight game. Sometimes emotions get into it but it’s important to recognize that emotions have no place in business.

So that’s essentially what it was last night. We just set it aside. There’s no place for emotions in this. We are doing beautiful things so let’s continue. Let’s fix it and continue.”

McGregor was also asked where his relationship with the company currently stood:

“I’d say we’re nice and in the middle. In a good place,” McGregor said.

While an announcement has not yet been made on who McGregor’s next opponent may be, one is expected to be made soon, and according to FOX Sports it’s most likely a rematch with Stockton native Nate Diaz at UFC 202.

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor is currently caught up in a fight that not many people believe he can win. No, we aren’t talking about the impending rematch with the man that handed McGregor his first UFC loss, Nate Diaz, this opponent is far bigger and has a reach advantage over every single athlete on the roster. It’s the promotion itself, as ‘The Notorious’ has gone from a rough and ready Irish lad, then to a budding UFC star with turned out pockets, and in no time risen to the top of the featherweight division and beyond, to now facing the might of the UFC brass.

In a strange sequence of events McGregor briefly retired before being pulled from UFC 200 for refusing to attend his contractually obligated media responsibilities. His second fight with Diaz, who had finished McGregor in their first meeting at UFC 196, was put on ice while another battle ensued.

With both sides sticking to their guns, the McGregor vs. UFC saga became a battle for position, as the Irish star attempted to flex his social media muscle and do his best to divert attention from the promotion during this recent fight weekend. Rumours of a boxing match against Floyd Mayweather dominated headlines in the lead up to the UFCs epic Rotterdam card.

Once the man who could effortlessly sell pay-per-views by the millions, ‘The Notorious’ finds himself scalded by the UFC and left on the naughty step.

It just further illustrates the point that the UFC will never willingly allow a fighter to become bigger than the promotion itself, although the endless dollars they poured in to the McGregor project has ended up working against them now. Brendan Schaub recently said he ‘guarantees’ the UFC would sign McGregor out of his contract for a fight with Mayweather, but UFC commentator Joe Rogan doesn’t see it that black and white.
