The Diaz brothers have found themselves as superstars in 2016, after spending years as the ‘anti-heroes’ in mixed martial arts, they’ve suddenly found themselves as leading figures in the UFC. It comes for a number of reasons, for younger brother Nate it’s been the combination of years fighting the top contenders and then a landmark duo of wins over Michael Johnson and Conor McGregor. Similarly for older brother Nick, he’d been competing against the most elite fighters on the planet consistently, then his antics against Anderson Silva and resulting struggle with the Nevada Athletic Commission saw him surge to mainstream celebrity status.

With the win over ‘The Notorious,’ it was first believed that Nate Diaz could potentially receive a title shot at either welterweight or lightweight, but those opinions were swiftly shot down when the news leaked that a rematch was in the works. According to rampant reports, UFC 200 is the stage for Diaz vs. McGregor 2.

diaz vs mcg2

Perhaps the most enticing prospect of the rematch is a repeat of the highly entertaining banter that McGregor and Diaz shared before UFC 196. Their antics may have only lasted 11 days, but they easily bested some of the most classic rivalries in the sport’s history. Even down to the post-fight ‘I’m not surprised motherf*ckers’ interview with Diaz, this fight truly had it all.

The bout itself was not too shabby either, featuring barrel loads of strikes thrown with vicious intent before the eventual ending in round two. The Irishman’s demise came in the form of a slick rear naked choke from the Stockton grappler, and now we find ourselves asking how ‘The Notorious’ can avoid the same fate come UFC 200.

Diaz and Rousey

Not one to let go of the comments that McGregor had spouted before UFC 196, Nick Diaz gave his opinion on the Irish star during a recnt interview for BJPenn.com. He’s referring to McGregor claiming Diaz had terrible training partners, check it out:

UFC lightweight Donald Cerrone is expected to face Patrick Côté at UFC Fight Night 89 on June 18, as the promotion heads to Ottawa, Canada for the first time. ‘Cowboy’ got back to winning ways with a win over Alex Oliveira in February, making him 9-1 in his last 10, the only loss being a brutal beat down at the hands of Rafael dos Anjos last December. The bout against ‘The Predator’ will go down at welterweight, as it appears dos Anjos took the last of the goods Cerrone had to offer at 155 pounds.

Another fighter making an extended foray to the UFC welterweight division is the featherweight champion Conor McGregor. ‘The Notorious’ recently put his newly captured 145-pound belt on hold to face ‘RDA’ for the lightweight strap at UFC 196, but ended up facing Nate Diaz in an impromptu yet thrilling 170-pound burner. Everything about the fight, and pre fight was gold. It seems the UFC had found a perfect combination, and it had fallen upon them by accident.

Conor vs. Diaz

Cerrone reveals that he was asked if he would accept the fight with McGregor before the UFC had decided on Diaz, but that he eventually never got the call:

“Apparently I wasn’t close enough – I didn’t get the call. They called me and asked if I would say yeah. I even said I would take it at 155 (pounds). I was willing to make 155 no problem and fight him. But it just didn’t work out.”

Donald Cerrone wants to bring UFC lightweight title fight to ...

Diaz would put an end to the fairy tale streak of McGregor, submitting him and pointing out the glaring gaps in the Irishman’s ground game. Cerrone was watching, and was not impressed by what he saw. As he tells MMAJunkie.com, he was also not surprised (motherf*ckers) to see Nate Diaz get the victory:

“I wasn’t surprised at all,” Cerrone said. “That’s how I would have fought. I would have went in there and took his ass down and submitted him right away. I’m not even going to start on the (expletive) (expletive).”

If there’s one thing we know for sure about UFC welterweight/lightweight Nate Diaz, it’s that he doesn’t care much for the more traditional style of hyping fights and media coverage. Most elite fighters who talk trash and act out theatrical antics in the lead up to fights are essentially playing ball to sell more tickets, but much like his older brother Nick, Nate Diaz prefers to tell it how it is. The anti-bullsh*t style of the Diaz brothers had made them cult celebrities up until recently.

Now that Nate Diaz holds a victory over Conor McGregor, he joins his older bro Nick in the league of UFC needle movers, but it hasn’t come without a lot of hard work. As he famously told McGregor after his lightweight win over Michael Johnson ‘you’re taking everything I worked for motherf*cker.’ Well, with his second round submission over ‘The Notorious’ on March 5, it seems like the Stockton bad boy is finally getting the attention he deserves.

The lead up to UFC 196, with the combination of Nate Diaz’ real talk and Conor McGregor’s outlandish attitude, was a vintage rivalry. It was only 11 days long because Diaz was a substitute for the injured lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos, but the promotion made sure that this small window of opportunity was crammed with eventful media conferences and confrontations. One such moment that really brought the world’s attention to their feud was on the FOX Sports show ‘Jay & Dan,’ this was where their beef truly got some air time.

With lines like ‘Nobody knows what a gazelle is,’ and ‘you know it’s the real shit (x10),’ it was clear from that point that the pay-per-view sales would sky rocket at UFC 196. The impact was so great in terms of revenue that the two have once again been matched for a UFC 200 showdown, and once again at welterweight.

Nate Diaz has finally caught up with Jay and Dan, and the result is absolutely hilarious…

There was a whole bunch of questions being asked in the lead up to UFC 196, as UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor prepared to take on Rafael dos Anjos, in an attempt to make UFC history. The lightweight belt was on the line, and the Irish superstar was all set to duke it out with his Brazilian rival, until the injury bug struck again. With ‘RDA’ out, Nate Diaz was drafted in and the welterweight main event was made official on just 11 days notice.

The consensus opinion was that Diaz would be out of shape, and essentially feature as the bitter half of a pay-per-view squash match. How wrong the consensus was, as the Stockton native battered and submitted McGregor in the second round of a thrilling affair. We asked the question before UFC 196, what happens if Nate Diaz beats Conor McGregor? The obvious answer was that ‘The Notorious’ would be sent packing back to featherweight, to finally defend his belt, once again we were very wrong.

diaz vs mcg2

Less than two weeks after their first fight had transpired was the shocking news that the two fierce rivals had agreed to fight again, this time at the milestone UFC 200 card. Again at 170 pounds, the announcement came as both confusing and frustrating to many hardcore fans of mixed martial arts and the UFC. With the featherweight division put on hold yet again, it was clear that the McGregor effect was still a massively controlling factor for the promotion. And yet again, we ask the question, what happens if Nate Diaz destroys Conor McGregor (again)?

Here’s our highly speculative outcomes:

A. McGregor 1

Back to featherweight

So the first and perhaps most obvious outcome of another loss to Nate Diaz would be that Conor McGregor would head back to the 145-pound division to defend his belt. The championship he won from Jose Aldo at UFC 194 is begging to be once again legitimized, but let’s not overlook how rarely it was defended back when ‘Scarface’ was on top. Of course with Aldo now a contender, and also Frankie Edgar screaming for a crack at the whip, it’s no wonder some fans are in disarray at the current booking of Diaz vs. McGregor 2.

To illustrate the point on how often Aldo defended the belt, this:

So things could be a lot worse, and McGregor has not pulled out of a UFC fight yet.

It’s the rematch nobody expected, but UFC 200 is looking like the place it’ll go down…

Well, who expected to see this bombshell dropped this week? Not even two weeks have passed since Nate Diaz dispatched Conor McGregor in the UFC 196 main event, and already the promotion is working to book the rematch at UFC 200. The Stockton bad boy Diaz submitted McGregor after a thrilling slugfest at the March 5 pay-per-view extravaganza, exposing the holes in the Irish boxer’s game both on the feet and on the canvas. McGregor, it seemed, had been temporarily debunked.

With the hype surrounding ‘The Notorious’ remaining steadfast due to the fight being at welterweight, it looked as though he was being sent back to featherweight to defend the title that had been put on hold by his quest for two belts. After Rafael dos Anjos was injured and removed from the UFC 196 card, the reason the fight with Diaz was at welterweight was because Nate refused to cut down to lightweight on just 11 days notice.

So a highly unnecessary yet entertaining bout was born at the floating weight of 170 pounds, and fair play to McGregor for taking the loss on the chin in the post fight stages. But then the news broke just last night that the UFC was looking to book the rematch at their next landmark PPV show, and at welterweight too. The news was met with confusion, anticipation, and outrage from various corners of the MMA community, as many believed and hoped that the featherweight title would once again become active.

We can think of five reasons that the UFC shoud have avoided Conor McGregor vs. Nate Diaz 2.

It was little over a week ago now that Nate Diaz sent the mixed martial arts world in to a frenzy with his win over Conor McGregor. The UFC featherweight champion had his hopes of twin title glory dashed on the rocks when the lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos pulled out of UFC 196, and Diaz furthered the Irish star’s woes. Much like his dream of holding two consecutive UFC belts from two fights, McGregor’s attempt to extend his win streak to eight in the UFC was also snubbed when Diaz submitted McGregor in the second round of their welterweight burner.

It was indeed an entertaining fight, a scrap that saw both men land some solid shots, and for the first time in his UFC career ‘The Notorious’ was wobbled more than once. When the fight went to the mat, it was all Diaz, as the Gracie BJJ black belt quickly took the back and sunk in a rear naked choke.

Suddenly Nate Diaz was the name on every MMA fan’s lips, and Conor McGregor was left with some serious points to sharpen up on. Less than a week had passed when UFC president Dana White revealed that McGregor would return at UFC 200, but no word of what’s next for the man that just defeated him? The featherweight title needs defending, and apparently ‘The Notorious’ was keen to get back on the horse as soon as possible, but then the following report by Middle Easy owner Zeus Tipado on Twitter.

Interesting. It’s worth noting that the legitimacy of this report was brought in to question by numerous followers of Tipado, but he argues vehemently that he has a legitimate source. Also of importance is that Diaz would likely never make 145 pounds, so it might have meant McGregor stalling his UFC featherweight title defense yet again.

What do you think?
