It’s a legitimate question, as the fate of not just one or two, but three divisions could rest on the shoulders of Conor McGregor and Nate Diaz at UFC 196…

The lead up to UFC 196 was marred with injury when Rafael dos Anjos broke his foot training for Conor McGregor and was forced to withdraw from this weekend’s (Saturday March 5, 2016) pay-per-view main event.

Suddenly the card was under serious threat of unravelling and the search for McGregor’s stand-in opponent was on with under two weeks left to fight date. The ironic similarities between UFC 196 and the UFC 189 saga were obvious.

In stepped Stockton bad boy Nate Diaz, and suddenly a battle of trash talkers would headline UFC 196, which, for the most part, has been massively entertaining.

But there was one caveat from the camp of Diaz, as they weren’t willing to cut down to lightweight on such short notice so the fight had to take place at welterweight. A fair enough statement, but the ramifications of this move up of two weight classes for featherweight champ ‘The Notorious’ could be felt in no small amount by three of the UFC’s most popular divisions.

McGregor-Dos-Anjos-Collage[1]

As McGregor makes his 170-pound debut, consider this; how well will his body adapt from being molded to that of a welterweight competitor, to cutting straight back down to featherweight for his next fight?

Probably not very well, and with the original booking of dos Anjos still potentially looming, it’s likely that he’ll be facing the Brazilian lightweight boss in his next fight. For the line of featherweight contenders and the ex-champion Jose Aldo, this is not an exciting prospect.

Frankie Edgar

So already you see the complications for the featherweight class, but what about lightweight?

If you remember, in recent weeks McGregor said he wants to fight Robbie Lawler for the welterweight belt at UFC 200. That statement may not hold weight in the myriad of trash talk going on recently, but remember how he called out the lightweight champion before thumping Aldo, and look what happened there.

So conceivably two divisions could be put completely on hold, as could the top contenders at welterweight if McGregor faces Lawler next, but that could also depend on when dos Anjos is healthy to defend.

And so we come to the crux of the article, what happens if Nate Diaz destroys Conor McGregor at UFC 196?

Although fans won’t get what they were originally promised at March 5’s UFC 196, which will go down at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, the masses seem to be overly joyed with what we have now received.

After lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos pulled out of his bout with featherweight kingpin Conor McGregor, brash and outspoken bad boy Nate Diaz stepped up on just over a week’s notice.

McGregor and Diaz, two of the sport’s most highly touted trash talkers, have had some bad blood in the past, specifically when Diaz went on a rant about the Irishman after his UFC on FOX 17 victory over Michael Johnson.

The Stockton native repeatedly called the “Notorious” one out, and Diaz obviously has gotten what he’s wanted.

The two men met face to face at a press conference in California yesterday, going back and forth in epic war of verbal attrition.

While that frenzy probably did enough to hype up fans for the fight, the UFC has continued to promote the short notice bout with two official UFC 196 promo videos.

It looks like someone is not a fan of Conor McGregor, and this recent image has sparked an investigation by the UFC and the FBI…

UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor will face Nate Diaz in the main event of UFC 196 this coming March 5, and we got to see the first battle of the trash talkers during an eventful presser last night. Both ‘The Notorious’ and Diaz were on form, and shared a heated staredown to close the evening’s festivities. With Rafael dos Anjos injured, there probably wasn’t a better replacement in terms of marketability for this fight.

With Conor McGregor coverage hitting fever pitch over the recent weeks, it looks as though the Irish striker has been ruffling a few feathers outside of the mixed martial arts world. This threat was sent out over Twitter last night, and broke by Mike Dyce and Zombie Prophet. Check it out:

The federal bureau of investigation is now seeking the owner of the account associated with the threatening image, where the man appears to be holding an AK-47 assault rifle, while sending out the following threat:

@TheNotoriousMMA Be careful talking down on neighbourhoods, you don’t run shit here except the UFC, and in the hood we use guns not fists this ain’t Ireland

Needless to say, the authorities and the Ultimate Fighting Championship are taking this threat very seriously, especially given the heightened threat levels already being experienced the world over. We’ll bring you more updates on this story as they arise.

With lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos pulling out of his scheduled super fight with featherweight champion Conor McGregor, it was announced last night that Nate Diaz will step in to meet McGregor on just 11 day’s notice in the main event of March 5’s UFC 195.

While a title won’t be on the line, McGregor vs. Diaz is still a huge fight in its own right. Not only do the two possess contrasting styles of striking, but they also happen to be two of the best trash talkers in the sport, even having a history with each other to show for it.

As for how the fight will play out, it’s hard to tell given the short notice.

The “Notorious” one infamously predicted that he would “dust” dos Anjos in less than a minute, and it appears as if Team McGregor feels just as confident going up against the Stockton native.

McGregor’s long-time head coach, John Kavanagh, recently spoke on the fight, noting some of Diaz’s past performances, including his 2013 knockout loss to Josh Thomson.

All in all, Kavanagh doesn’t feel as if this one is going to last too long (via The42.ie):

“You must be ready for every type of opponent. As for Nate, if you look at his last fight when he beat Michael Johnson by decision, Michael comes from a great team but he is quite new to striking, yet he still managed to land a lot of shots. Josh Thomson badly lit Nate up when they fought in 2013. The Diaz brothers are known for walking through shots but Nate doesn’t quite have Nick’s ability to absorb punishment. It’s a different ballgame when you face somebody who has been striking for their entire life, as opposed to a wrestler who’s still trying to develop their striking. I think it will be an early night for Nate.”

The weight at which this bout is taking place at is also interesting to note.

McGregor, who holds a title at 145-pounds, was jumping up ten pounds to clash with dos Anjos, but he will now move up two whole weight classes to fight Diaz at welterweight.

Who do you see walking away with the victory in this highly anticipated affair?
