Last month, UFC President Dana White announced that newly minted middleweight champion Michael Bisping would be making the first defense of his 185-pound title against aging veteran Dan “Hendo” Henderson in a rematch of their UFC 100 bout where Henderson scored one of the most iconic knockouts in sport history. Despite “Hendo” being ranked outside of the top 10, fans appeared to be interested in the bout, and White said that it was being targeted for October in Manchester, Bisping’s home.

Now, however, the bout has officially been confirmed. MMAFighting.com has reported that two veterans will be squaring off in the main event of October 8’s UFC 204 from Manchester, England. “The Count” also announced the bout earlier today (August 4, 2016) on his SiriusXM radio show.

Bisping shocked the world at June 4’s UFC 199, knocking out then champion Luke Rockhold in the very first round of their rematch. What made the victory so sensational, however, was that the Brit accepted the bout on extremely short notice after Chris Weidman had been forced to withdraw. Prior to beating Rockhold, Bisping had won three straight over Thales Leites, C.B Dolloway, and Anderson Silva.

Henderson, on the other hand, is coming off of a brutal stoppage victory over Hector Lombard also at UFC 199, although the American had hit some rough times prior to that, losing three of four. At age 45, Henderson has said that win or lose, this rematch will be his last fight.

Who do you see taking home middleweight gold on October 8th?

In the aftermath of last night’s (July 9, 2016) monumental UFC 200 event from Las Vegas, Nevada, UFC President Dana White announced that newly minted middleweight champion Michael Bisping would likely be defending his title against No. 13-ranked ageing veteran Dan “Hendo” Henderson.

Bisping has made it clear that he wants revenge on Henderson, who brutally knocked him out back at UFC 100 in 2009, but the announcement has received some criticism as well, most notably from the middleweight division’s top contenders.

Given the fact that “Hendo” has lost three of his last four despite coming off of a stoppage victory over Hector Lombard and is currently ranked No. 13, some feel as if the former Olympian isn’t deserving of a title shot.

No. 2-ranked former champion Chris Weidman and No. 3-ranked Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza both took to Twitter to voice their opinions on the matchup:

The translation to Jacare’s tweet is as follows: If the UFC wants to honor Dan Henderson then place him in the UFC Hall of Fame, don’t steal what I won!!

Weidman was set to rematch Luke Rockhold for the title at UFC 199, but was unfortunately forced to withdraw with an injury which led Bisping to step up on short notice and win the title. Weidman has continuously expressed his interest in facing off with Bisping for the title at November 12’s UFC 205 in his home of New York.

“Jacare”, on the other hand, is coming off of a one-sided stoppage victory over Vitor Belfort, and he too appears to be upset with the upcoming title fight.

Do you agree with Weidman and Souza, or are you content with Bisping squaring off with Henderson again?

Dana White Announces Michael Bisping vs. Dan Henderson Rematch

After coming in on short notice and scoring an emphatic upset knockout victory over Luke Rockhold to steal the title at UFC 199, Michael Bisping had made it clear that he had revenge on his mind. When asked who he’d like to make his first title defense against, the newly-minted champion responded with Dan Henderson, an ageing legend who had brutally knocked him out back at UFC 100 in 2009.

Despite the clear interest from fans, it was hard to tell how realistic a title bout with Bisping and Henderson was given the fact that Henderson is currently ranked outside of the top 10 in the middleweight division. “Hendo” is coming off of an impressive knockout victory over Hector Lombard.

Apparently, however, the idea was very realistic. UFC President Dana White appeared on FOX Sports 1 after last night’s (July 9, 2016) UFC 200 to announce the rematch between Bisping and Henderson. No official date or venue was named, but White did say that Manchester, England was the targeted location, a statement that’ll likely excite the Brit in Bisping:

Prior to shocking the world against Rockhold, Bisping had scored a somewhat controversial decision victory over all-time great former champion Anderson Silva last February. Prior to finishing Lombard, Henderson had lost three of his last four.

Despite the announcement from the UFC boss, no official deal has been signed, although Bisping vs. Henderson II appears to be next for the stacked middleweight division.

Crazy Or Not, Dana White ‘Wouldn’t Rule Out’ Bisping vs. Henderson

After being asked to step up on extremely short notice to face off with Luke Rockhold for the middleweight title at June 4’s UFC 199, Michael Bisping wasn’t given much of a chance by the MMA community. However, he then shocked the masses, knocking Rockhold out cold in the very first round to become the undisputed champion.

Perhaps even more shocking then his victory, however, was his choice of who he would like to first defend his title against. Rather than one of the division’s top contenders, Bisping has his eyes set on No. 13-ranked ageing veteran Dan “Hendo” Henderson.

There is quite back story here, as “Hendo” infamously finished Bisping with one of the most iconic knockouts in sport history back at UFC 100 in 2009, but from a rankings standpoint, it simply doesn’t make much sense. Crazy or not, however, UFC President Dana White recently admitted that he was considering the possibility:

“I know a lot of people want to see that fight, but there’s so many guys that we would have to jump over to do that fight. But most of them are hurt. ‘Jacare’ is hurt, Weidman’s hurt, Rockhold just lost. So I wouldn’t rule it out. He’s saying win, lose or draw, if he fought Bisping in a title fight he would retire. But if wins the belt I highly doubt he would retire. I don’t know, it’s a tough one. I’ve questioned over the last year whether Henderson should still be fighting at 45, but it’s hard to deny the guy when he’s taking people out the way that he is.” White said on a recent edition of the UFC Unfiltered podcast.

Despite his age, Henderson is indeed coming off of a brutal stoppage victory over Hector Lombard at the very event in which Bisping toppled Rockhold for the title, but is he deserving of a title shot? Many would likely agree that he’s not given the current landscape of the division, although the interest for a rematch between Bisping and Henderson seems to be there.

Would you like to see these two veterans run it back?
