Former longtime UFC welterweight champion Georges “Rush” St. Pierre hasn’t competed since UFC 167 when he won a highly controversial decision over Johny Hendricks. Now, the Canadian star is ready to make his return and he’ll do so in a middleweight title fight later this year against champion Michael Bisping.

Hendricks has also moved up to 185 pounds in recent memory, scoring an impressive decision victory over Hector Lombard at UFC Fight Night 105 after a string of disappointing setbacks. With the two once again competing at the same weight, Hendricks is interested in earning a rematch with St. Pierre.

In fact, “Bigg Rigg” recently said that he ‘can’t wait to retire’ “Rush”:

“I can’t wait to retire him again,” Hendricks told Submission Radio. “That’s really what I’ve been thinking. You know, I told him, I have no disrespect for the guy, he did amazing things. But three years out of it, you know, things have changed. And he said that I’m washed out. Well guess what? It’s a new Johny at 185. And I cannot wait for him to see, I can’t wait to see how this happens. Because win or lose, I think he should come after me. I think I should get that loss back. Realistically, you know, it is what it is, but I would like to do it again. I really do. And this time, he thought I was strong at 170, wait till he feels me at 185 when I’m not killing myself to make weight, when I’m not killing myself just to focus on my weight cut. What is he gonna think after the 185-pound match, when I’m totally focused on one thing and one thing only, doing what I did but better? That’s really where my head’s at, is right there.”

St. Pierre has said that he’s only interested in the most lucrative fights before he finally hangs up his gloves for good, making a rematch with Hendricks seem somewhat unlikely.

Would you, however, like to see the two run it back at middleweight?

No. 3-ranked UFC middleweight contender Robert “The Reaper” Whittaker has established himself as a legitimate threat in the 185-pound division after winning seven consecutive bouts, with his last two victories coming by way of T/KO. His most recent win marked the biggest of his career, as he knocked out No. 5-ranked Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza at UFC on FOX 24.

With his recent streak, “The Reaper” feels as if he’s deserving of a title shot. In fact, he’s willing to wait for the winner of the upcoming title fight between champion Michael Bisping and Georges St. Pierre, which is expected to take place later this year:

“I don’t see why I should,” Whittaker said when asked whether he would take another fight while Bisping takes on GSP, per Matt Bungard of The Sydney Morning Herald. “Bisping has said I’m the No.1 contender, so I don’t see a reason for me to fight until he’s done with Georges.

“I did something on the weekend that nobody in the top ten has ever done. I took [Souza] and I stopped him in devastating fashion.”

Continuing on, Whittaker said that he’s now ‘unstoppable’ and he attributes this feeling to losing back-to-back fights in 2014, which forced him to re-evaluate his career:

“That set a change in motion, it really did,” Whittaker said. “It made me sit back on my heels and go ‘what do I need to change, what do I need to do?’ I corrected everything. I stopped going away from home, I surrounded myself with smart people and people who care for me, and now I have the best team in the world. I’m unstoppable.”

Whittaker’s confidence appears to be at an all-time high, as he even went as far as to say that ’no one’ can stop him:

“No one, that’s my honest belief. Everyone doubted me with Jacare and I put him away. I’m in top form and I think people don’t realise that we down here are legit, we’ve got skill sets and we’re good fighters.”

Do you feel as if the 26-year-old Whittaker has what it takes to be a UFC champion?

Former longtime UFC welterweight champion Georges “Rush” St. Pierre will make his long awaited return to action later this year when he battles 185-pound titleholder Michael Bisping at a date and venue to be announced.

Many have criticized the booking between St. Pierre and Bisping simply because “Rush” is leapfrogging a few deserving middleweight contenders after having not competed since 2013. The Canadian has also never fought at 185 pounds.

As far as the fight goes, however, St. Pierre’s boxing coach Freddie Roach said that it was UFC President Dana White who offered the bout:

“That was the fight that was offered to us, through Dana (White),” Roach told Fight Hub of the Bisping matchup. “(He asked us) ‘do you want him?’ And we all thought about it, and we all said yes.”

St. Pierre has made it clear that he will only be returning for a few fights and Roach said that he’s hoping to have the ex-welterweight champion fight reigning lightweight king Conor McGregor in his final fight:

“With the last fight, we’re hoping (for it) to be (Conor) McGregor.”

“Who wouldn’t want that fight? I mean, it’s a big fight,” Roach said. “We’d have to maybe cut weight, meet in the middle somewhere, but there’s long negotiations (that could) still happen, of course. But, who wouldn’t want that fight?”

A bout between St. Pierre and McGregor would certainly be a blockbuster booking, as it would pit two of the biggest pay-per-view draws in UFC history against each other.

No. 1-ranked middleweight contender Yoel Romero has rattled off an incredible eight straight victories, with six of those victories coming by way of stoppage. “The Soldier of God” was expected to receive the next title shot, but the UFC elected to book 185-pound champion Michael Bisping against returning former welterweight king Georges St. Pierre.

That title fight has yet to receive a date and venue, however, and Bisping recently revealed that he isn’t willing to wait for St. Pierre. In fact, “The Count” said that he’d rather fight Romero first if GSP isn’t willing to fight on July 8, 2017 during International Fight Week.

Romero seems to have gotten wind of Bisping’s comments and he responded earlier today, saying that the champion doesn’t have the heart to fight him:

“The Soldier of God” is clearly one of the most frightening fighters in the 185-pound division and he’s coming off of a brutal flying knee knockout over ex-champion Chris Weidman last November. Bisping, however, has assured fans on multiple occasions that he’ll indeed fight Romero.

What do you make of the middleweight title picture?

Legendary Boxing Trainer To Corner Georges St. Pierre In Return Bout

Former longtime UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre will make his long awaited return to the Octagon later this year when he takes on middleweight titleholder Michael Bipsing, and it appears as if St. Pierre will have a new face in his corner for the bout.

“Rush” has worked with legendary boxing trainer Freddie Roach for years now, but Roach has never been in his corner, although that will soon change:

“I promised Georges I’ll be in his corner,” Roach told The Boston Herald. “That would be my first time in a corner for MMA, yes. It’s a little bit different, obviously, but the thing is, you have different coaches. And one thing I know about coaching is that people only listen to one person. So somebody will be in control of what’s going on, and we’ll all work together while the round’s going on and help each other.”

St. Pierre has long trained under the tutelage of Firas Zahabi at the famed Tristar Gym in Canada. It’s likely that Zahabi will remain in his corner, but Roach actually feels as if he’ll be the main speaker on fight night:

“Who’s going to be the speaker that night is whoever Georges is most comfortable with, and it will probably be me, I think, but we’ll see how that goes,” Roach said. “I think Georges has a lot of confidence in me, and I in him.”

As far as St. Pierre’s return bout goes, Roach seems to be confident. The Canadian will obviously be at a size disadvantage, but Roach believes that “Rush” is ‘too much of an athlete’ for Bisping:

“I think Georges is too much of an athlete, too skillful for him,” Roach said. “I know Georges’ number one game is not striking, but he is getting better and better at it, and I feel that going into this fight he’s going to be really confident.”

What do you make of Roach being in the corner of GSP?

Former longtime UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre hasn’t competed since 2013, but he will make his long awaited return later this year when he takes on middleweight champion Michael Bisping at a date and venue to be announced.

Given that “Rush” is currently 35-years-old, it’s understandable why some are wondering what kind of shape he’s in at this stage of his career, not to mention that he also underwent another knee surgery in his time away from the cage.

Despite the layoff, St. Pierre has always been one of the most well-conditioned and athletic fighters competing in the UFC, and judging by a recent video of him performing a gymnastics workout, that still may be the case.

Check it out below courtesy of Fancy Combat:

The last time St. Pierre fought was at UFC 167 when he scored a highly controversial decision victory over Johny Hendricks.

Bisping recently defended his 185-pound title over Dan Henderson after scoring a shocking stoppage victory over former champion Luke Rockhold last year.
